2018 Illinois Baseball

The crazy thing is the Illini led the Big 10 in fewest errors this season.

Apparently, Spillane's glove broke to cause the second error, but the first was a double-play ball that went right through the shortstop's legs that allowed two runs to score.

Yeah that was an absolute killer. Easy DP grounder would have minimized the damage in that inning. Still, overall defensive effort has just not been good enough to win this game.

Too bad. Could be the Illini were pooped. They'e looked good for a while.

Announcers talked about the thermometer reading 120. They thought it was because it was resting on or near a metal rail. You gotta think it was hotter on the field than in the stands, though. But it was hot for both teams. Purdue had a day's rest; I'm sure that helped.

Illinois: get youselves some well-deserved rest and await decision Monday. I'm sure you're in.

Good luck.

That heat had to be a killer. And assuming Illinois had won both games today, tomorrow they'd have to take on Minnesota having played what, four games in three days? In heat that was 85 degrees at 11:00 at night and pushing 100 in the day? (Although I'm glad I wasn't wearing a black shirt in Omaha today.)

Probably better to get the rest preparing for NCAA, where certainly they'll be included. It's going to be interesting where the games will be played and who of us might be able to attend.

And man, Bren has to get that fire lit again. Obviously no one is going to pitch to him, and walks are nice, but still we need his booming bat.

Yep, meant to type Sunday. But thought still holds, cmon out on Thursday through Saturday for casual fans, Sunday for fans of teams in final.

Each time I flipped to the game, there was zero to ten fans ever shown on the screen. Truly looked/felt like an empty stadium on tv, except for the sound of some fans cheering.

Agreed. But as I pointed out, there aren't going to be much better options. You can't hold it in Indy unless they decide to have the championship game played Saturday.

Now if you're looking at other AAA cities to hold it in, these would be the ones within the conference's footprint:
-Allentown, PA
-Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA
-Columbus, OH (which they've done before)
-Toledo, OH
-Des Moines, IA
-Omaha, NE (Though the venue the B1G Tourney is played at isn't actually a home field for the Omaha AAA team; aside from it being used for the College World Series, Creighton uses it during the college baseball season)

I've been to several B1G Baseball tournaments. With the exception of Omaha back in 2014 (Nebraska and Iowa made deep runs) attendance has always been lacking. The day games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I usually low attended games. If local teams get knocked out early, their fans usually stay home.
I realize this next part will never impact any of you, or if any of you would care. But for traveling media the bigger stadiums make the most sense. You have 8 different radio crews setting up the first two days, video crews for each team, photographers from each team along with local and other media outlets. Most if not all B1G stadiums are not set up to handle that many media, most B1G Stadiums do not have media work rooms or rooms to hold post game press conferences.
They provide meals for the media all day long or at least before every game. You need a kitchen set up and a dining area to feed everyone. Once again most B1G Stadiums have none of these. For TV you need a lot of room for all their trucks and equipment. The BTN crew is double it's normal size for these events.
As fans, they usually could care less about us in the media, but when you spend several hours at the Stadium several days in a row, these amenities are crucial.
Lots of good comments above, but the truth is, the players love playing in these venues, even with small crowds. Everything is first class, the field, lights, indoor cages, bathrooms next to the dugouts etc. A central location would be ideal, but the venue has to be willing as well. It's a ton of work on the Grounds Crew and general staffing for the venue.
Maybe as the Stadiums improve across the B1G, it may change. But knowing what it takes to put this event on, it would be a nightmare for many schools to attempt this. Even the Softball Tournament is starting to run into these problems, and it's a single elimination format.

Thank very much for your perspective. Very enlightening.

Minnesota gets a #14 national seed. If they make it to Super Regional (and seeds hold), they would travel to #3 national seed Oregon State.

Ohio State gets #3 regional seed in Greenville (East Carolina) regional. Will face #2 regional seed South Carolina Friday at 1PM CT on ESPN2.

Indiana gets #2 regional seed in Austin regional. Will face #3 regional seed Texas A&M Friday at 4PM CT on ESPN2.

Purdue gets #2 regional seed in Chapel Hill regional. They will face #3 regional seed Houston at 1PM CT Friday on WatchESPN.

Minnesota will host Canisius Friday at 7 PM CT Friday on ESPNU. Other match-up in Gophers' regional is Gonzaga vs. UCLA.

I hate the NCAA so much. They always screw the Illini

Screwed? How? When you're on the bubble, there's a reason that you're there. It's that you didn't play well enough over a 50+ game schedule to deserve to be included.

When you lose a series late in the season to Iowa, for example, you get what you deserve.

From a perspective purpose, what would Illinois' record have been had they played in the SEC? Knowing that, Kentucky had a FAR bigger beef than Illinois.

Not a surprise at all.

Sounds like Kentucky got a raw deal.

I understand the bubble. It just seems that if an Illinois team is ever on the bubble, they almost always end up on the wrong side.

I can only recall one time that an Illini team was ever considered to be on the NCAA bubble and got in (basketball one year under Weber), and that was used to justify the next year when they were left out.

So we’re fourth in the B1G regular season, right?

Really don’t understand the love Indiana gets. We beat them twice over the past week, finished ahead of them in conference and I believe had a better record vs top 100 than they did.

They had a higher RPI, which matters until Illinois' RPI is higher, then conference record is more important :tsk:

It is frustrating. No doubt. I'm more frustrated at the big picture. All of our teams, in high profile sports, are either average to below average to flat out bad.

How long has it been now where recruiting hasn't been the most interesting part of the year because the current product is sub-par.

That's what has me bothered the most.

Being honest with ourselves, the 2018-2019 sports year promises to be much more of the same. That topic is for the each individual forum however.

No, I don't think Illinois got the shaft.

When you've got a relatively high RPI you can't afford to lose series against the likes of Iowa and Grand Canyon - and I'm not knocking either of those schools. And I think ILL lost the series against Ohio State at Illinois Field. As always, correct me.

Still, ILL took care of Indiana and finished higher in BIG standings that IU or Ohio - got to count for something, and I think it did.

I thiink the whole idea of RPI is beat or take the series from lower-ranked teams.

I have no idea, really.

The big question is: will Spillane return? Could use his power again, but I think Illini need pitching. What else is new in baseball?

I can't imagine that Spillane will return. Re. pitching - I think Jackson is the only guy that we lose and he was a nonfactor for us. Hopefully, Shilling can come back healthy. He should make a nice contribution. We signed a number of pitchers but I don't know anything of their quality: http://fightingillini.com/news/2017/11/7/nine-sign-nlis-to-illini-baseball.aspx?path=baseball
Better pitching would help but we also need to improve our hitting. We watched way too many strikes, especially third strikes.

Yes, I agree with the above, especially the hitting. I'm watching Illini bat, and I'm saying out loud "What's wrong with that pitch?" Pounce on it.

But it's so easy for me to be a critic: I've never faced 90+ mph pitches.

Illini had a fine season. And great uniforms!

P.S. Yes, i think Spillane will leave. Too bad, but good for him and his bank account.

Thanks, slugger! Good luck.

I think where the problem lies in baseball and RPI is the midweek games that teams play. They are usually against local or regional teams for travel reasons, but many P5 teams use them for games to get some of the other players innings, etc., especially pitchers. That seemed to bite the Illini in the arse in that midseason slump they went into.

I don't have a beef about Kentucky, they should have been in, but the IU and OSU ahead of Illinois is what I question. IU seemed to slump more near the end of the season, and Illinois single handedly knocked them out of the Big Ten tourney. OSU finished in 7th in the Big Ten?

I think Spillane is gone, and he should be. here's hoping the Cardinals draft him!

As for conference tourney? Hold it at Dozer Park in Peoria. Edge of downtown, plenty of hotel rooms in town, and close to World Famous Big Al's Gentlemen's Club, LOL!!!

Bren Spillane's power to right center is what will get him drafted in the top eight rounds. He also has a plus arm for first base or left field.
