So for anyone who stayed up late tonight to watch this...uh, where exactly was that balk that Gregerson got called for on the last hitter?

I didn’t see it, but heard Matheny on radio pregame and he said the umpires admitted making a mistake on the balk.

That was a really nice double play by Gyorko in extras. Norris and Cecil did a great job getting us out of jambs in both the 9th and 10th. I was particularly impressed by Bud. 3 K’s in a row!

some rumblings on the radio in STL that wainwright might have pitched his last game. I guess he was very down after the game and said some things around the clubhouse that was very discouraging. This is only a rumor but still, it’s a serious bummer to see him struggle.

Waino said he thinks he reaggravated the elbow injury late in his warm-up tosses in the first inning. He's headed back to St. Louis for an examination and is expected to miss his next start, which would have likely been Saturday vs. the Phillies.

If it is the end, it's been one helluva career for the 36 year old.

Always hard to see the once dominate pitcher try to scrap through his last few starts. Luckily, the Cardinals have 3 pitchers ready who might be better than 36 year old Wainwright (Flaherty for sure, Gomber and Gant have impressed me).

Plus Reyes at the end of May, that's like adding a potential ace for nothing at all. Pitching is going to be fine; it's Carpenter, Ozuna and Fowler I'm worried about. I knew the last 2 or so years of Fowler's deal would be bad, but didn't expect Bader or O'Neil to be ready to take over for him now.

Does Wainwright have potential to make an Eckersly like move to bullpen or is he past that point already? Could he help us there? I don’t remember how old Eckersly was when he made that move.

Wainwright was throwing 84 mph fastballs and his curve was registering as an "eephus" pitch, according to the gameday app. He's definitely not a guy you want coming out of the bullpen, you just don't know what you're going to get on a day by day basis. Maybe he could serve the honorary "guy who never pitches" spot in Matheny's mismanaged 8 man bullpen, but that's pointless.

I think he's cooked. His elbow tendons probably resemble spaghetti. I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved to the 60 day DL in a couple weeks when they need roster room for Reyes.

Based on his wiki, it looks like Eckersley was about 33 when that happened.

Eck was 32 when he went to he pen. 33 when he became the A’s closer.

His problem hadn’t been injuries. It was booze. His move to the pen coincided with getting clean. He told the Cubs he had gotten straight before they traded him. They didn’t believe him.

The A’s gave up three minor leaguers, none of whom ever got to the Majors, to get Eckersly. 8 months later the Cubs traded Lee Smith for Al Nipper and Calvin Schiraldi. A year after that, because they didn’t have a closer, the Cubs traded Rafael Palmeiro (!!) and Jamie Moyer (!!) for Mitch Williams.

No, I’m not still bitter. (I’m totally still bitter.)

But at least we beat Arrieta?

This has been a tough stretch but maybe we come out stronger from it. Unless someone dominates the central we will have a chance.

Nice win last night. Hope Gant can pitch well today.

In the "for what it's worth" category, the National League now has a sparkling 38-20 interleague record against the AL.

Flaherty is awesome, glad Wainwright took 3 of his MLB starts this year :tsk:.

Fire Greg Holland into the sun. Maybe Matheny will follow him into the sun, screaming "Proven Closer" the whole time.

Send Holland to Memphis, Matheny back to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

It is looking like Alex Reyes will be making his final rehab start on Thursday in Memphis. If all goes well, he will join the big club next week and face the Brewers.

It won't work this way, because injuries always happen, but a 6 man rotation of Martinez, Mikolas, Wacha, Weaver, Flaherty and Reyes is insane. That's an entirely under 30 rotation all with Ace of the rotation ceilings. The Cardinals, picking at the end of the 1st round year after year, have the best combination of Major League and Minor league pitching talent in the majors, kudos to Mozeliak and the development staff.

They could do some hybrid 6 man rotation thing to limit innings of those last 3 so they'd all be full boar for the playoff bullpen, and still have Martinez, Mikolas and Wacha pitch every 5 days.

In the STL paper today, it was mentioned, to keep pitch counts down, to schedule where each of the young guns may team up for a start, get there own and team up again. Sort of an A/B, C, B/C, A, C/A, B rotation. So, every 3 turns of the rotation, they would have 2 "half" games and one full game.

Boy am I glad I was so, so wrong about the Mikolas signing. He's been fantastic.

I thought he'd be a bust as well. Boy was I wrong. I'll give Moz credit for this one but take it back on Holland.
