In the STL paper today, it was mentioned, to keep pitch counts down, to schedule where each of the young guns may team up for a start, get there own and team up again. Sort of an A/B, C, B/C, A, C/A, B rotation. So, every 3 turns of the rotation, they would have 2 "half" games and one full game.

Matheny will find a way to bust that real quick, gotta get Holland some innings to "git him right".

But really, I like that they at least plan on keeping them all in the majors instead of wasting Flaherty or whoever innings in Memphis. But I'm sure an injury or ineffectiveness will end that pretty quick, but hopefully not.

Safe to say that Alex Reyes is ready for the big leagues full time? His stat line in Memphis last night:

7.0 innings pitched
1 hit
1 BB
14 Ks

I'm trying to temper my expectations a bit but it's hard to not get excited about this kid.

23 innings over 4 rehab starts; 44 Ks and no runs. It's minor leaguers, but yea pretty sure he's ready.

So with Memorial Day being the first fence post of the season, how does everyone feel about the Cardinals thus far?

Probably about as good of a position as I would have hoped for at this point. Brewers are better than I would have thought. Need to find a way to win series’ vs division foes. Haven’t been bad so far but, need to continue.

Starting pitching is getting better imo and has been better than I expected already.

Well if you ever think things are bad with the Cardinals bullpen, just remember that you could have Felipe Vazquez as your closer.

Vazquez (Rivero) was a lights-out closer last year. I'd still take him over any member of the Cards bullpen without hesitation.

I am thrilled by the walk-off but I am super bummed with Bid Norris. When they pulled Jordan Hicks, Bud just didn't hold up. Thats unlike him.

If we don't get the bullpen figured out, there is going to be a lot of unnecessary excitement late in games. I wonder if they consider taking the starters longer but letting them rest more with a 6-man rotation (assuming Reyes is healthy)

Norris over used. I was hoping Reyes would have come back in the bullpen. A back end of Hicks, Reyes and Norris intrigued me. To many 1 2/3 innings for Norris. Plus, when he enters early it’s high pressure.

Norris had about 25 seconds to warm up last night because Matheny doesn't understand how to manage bullpens, even 6 years into the job. Mayers got the adequate time to warm up, and got 4 outs pretty easily.

No one was warming up until Hicks had faced 3 batters in his 2nd inning of his 4th appearance in 6 days.

I think in general, the bull pen will be fine. Hicks is starting to strike guys out and they have plenty more talented AAA arms to throw at it. It is a lesson in never spending money on relievers though, the only good one is the bargain bin Norris and all the expensive ones (Cecil, Gregerson, Holland) are all bad.

He's pitched pretty well this year. Last night was his 3rd day in a row and Hurdle just left him out there to die. It was Hurdle's peak Matheny moment.

Plus, he left a game last weekend with forearm pain. What kind of manager trots out a pitcher 3 games in a row after having arm pain only a few days prior?

Wong walk-off special. Didn’t expect to see the big hit from him, again. He just has a knack for hitting walkoffs. Now if we could only get him to hit the rest of the time

And it was even said in the pre-game that Wong is frustrated at the fact that he hasn't been hitting that well. Though he did say that what's been saving him this season is how good he's been with the glove. I think he leads NL 2B (though I could be wrong on this) in Defensive Runs saved.

Cardinals draft Arizona high school 3B Nolan Gorman with the 19th overall pick in the MLB Draft tonight. Here's some of the scouting info I could find on mlb.com about him:

Another tremendous value in the late teens, Gorman is the best power hitter in this Draft -- which he showed off by winning the Home Run Derby at the Under Armour All-American Game last summer. Some clubs had some swing-and-miss concerns and worried about his ability to stay at third base, but I think Gorman will make enough contact and believe he's an underrated defender.

If a player's Draft status was tied directly to home run derby performances, Gorman might be the No. 1 pick in the Draft. The Arizona prep infielder took long ball crowns at the MLB All-Star Game High School Home Run Derby in Miami and at the Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The left-handed hitter has as much raw power as anyone in the class, with some scouts giving it as high as a 70 grade on the 20-to-80 scale. And it is power that does show up in games, though he didn't swing the bat consistently well all summer. There are some holes in his swing, which will lead to some swing and miss, but those who have seen him when he's locked in have seen his ultra-quick hands and bat speed. He did show that he can make hard contact against good competition at times over the summer, though he'd been a bit inconsistent this spring. One concern was whether he could stick at third, and while Gorman showed well at the hot corner at a variety of summer events, some of those worries did resurface this spring. If a scouting director saw Gorman at the right time, he might think of the University of Arizona commit as a top 10 pick and one of the best high school hitters in the country. Even with an up-and-down senior season, he still looks like one of the better power hitting prospects in the class.

Given the current state of the game, I thought the Cardinals got a steal with Gorman. Power is king at the moment, and he has it. Love the sound off his bat. I think his swing needs some work, but not a rework. Same with the glove - probably not going to a gold glover, but he'll get adequate enough at 3B or LF. Big concern will be his eye, which is always tough to read off a HS hitter.

At 19, he could be a steal and 19 is also far enough back that if he busts you are fine with it.

From everything I've read, he was a top 10 talent and no one is quite sure why he fell to pick 19. Hopefully not a sign-ability concern.

The high ceiling, low floor power bat is always fun to follow in the minors. Especially a guy with his pre-draft pedigree. The defense is suspect, probably ends up at 1B depending how his body develops.

I'm almost more excited for their 2nd pick, Griffin Roberts out of Wake Forest. His slider was billed as the top breaking pitch in the draft and his fastball is a plus pitch as well, tremendous value at pick 43. Could be in the bullpen as early as next year if they wanted too, hopefully sticks as a starter though.

Peter Gammons claimed that he could even be up this September. A stretch most likely, but would be exciting.
