Didn’t realize until last night they lead the league in runners being thrown out on the bases. When Fowler gets on base, a rarity, he still screws up!

its been a serious problem. Honestly, It really frustrates me. The errors in base running and in defense just are not acceptable to me. Living out here in Colorado, watching Nolan Arenado's defense makes me sad for our current crop of players. Bader has made some plays, but the in-field stinks...

Leading the league in runners thrown out on the bases doesn't surprise me at all. The Cardinals have had pretty awful base running for the past several years. They keep vowing to improve but it never happens.

What was the name of the infielder that came up last year? A very good defensive player. He played 3rd a lot. Where is he now?

Good question, I don’t know who you are referring to. I can only remember Diaz, Wong,Peralta, Gyrko, Carpenter, DeJong, Martinez, and Garcia getting work in the infield last year.

Diaz traded and Peralta is done.

It wasn’t any of those listed. I just remember him being really good defensively.

Forgot about google!

Alex Mejia. Looks like he is still in the organization, in the minors.

Correct. Mejia played shortstop for the Memphis Redbirds tonight, and is hitting .276.

How about the pitching tonight! I was happy about Flaherty’s pitch selection and his ability to stay cool when the heat was on him. Overall a much better game tonight. Everyone looked more relaxed. What was with ARods comments about Fowler not being comfortable yet in his new surroundings? He made it seem like he didn’t like the clubhouse atmosphere or something.

It's all a symptom of Matheny wanting to be "aggressive" on the bases, but him also not really knowing what that vague term means or what the risk/ reward profile looks like when being "aggressive".

I think it's equal parts allowing the green light for steals, extra bases, etc. in the first place and also not having the personnel to be a good base running team.

Matheny gets the statpacks that the nerds in the front office give him, that probably pretty boldly say "steals have to be successful 80% of the time to be worth it, which only the best base runners are able to do", and he throws those in the trash because "taking the extra base/ being aggressive" is just good old school baseball in his mind.

I wouldn't listen or take anything the national commentators say seriously. They are usually starting with the result (Fowler has been playing poorly) and searching for a enticing narrative to explain that (he's not comfortable a season and a half into playing in STL, even though he was good last year???).

I thought that there was a significant changes to being a disciplined team, when Jose Oquendo left. For years, we were good in those stats, at least if memory serves. I was hoping with him back this year, we would be better. So far, not so much.

There's a difference between being "aggressive" and being stupid. Apparently Matheny doesn't know that difference.

That's funny. I haven't seen Matheny on the bases yet this year. How many guys have been picked off first? Did he tell Tommy Pham to get picked off 3rd?

Don't mean to be so smart-assy. Point is that is plenty of blame to go around.

Ozuna with a bad play in LF after Mike Matheny Intentionally Walking the winning run on first base. You can't make this up. Something drastic has to change.

IBB'ing the winning run onto 1st with 1 out was bad bad.

Leaving historically high contact/ low strike out rate Bowman in when it looked like he was having trouble locating was bad.

Ozuna's play was just run of the mill. He probably could have caught it, and if he changes his route to not let the ball past him, the guy still probably scores from 1st since he was off on contact with 2 outs.

Mo's legacy is taking a hit. Roster post Luhnow is good but not great while Luhnow becomes a rock star. Mo is forever tied to hiring Matheny, a guy with no experience for the position.

He was smart to get promoted to the position to fire his surrogate.

I think credit must be given to him for the farm system but it's just not enough.

This team is BAD right now. Showing no signs of improvement. I know I've said it before but something drastic needs to change.
