These stories aren’t coming out of nowhere. Someone is wanting Matheny gone and is feeding stories to the media.

Over under he’s still around by the end of the season?

I really don't expect Matheny to return after the break unless Dewitt has bigger changes coming, and I doubt Mo is on the hot seat.

It won't come in the middle of the season, they don't operate that way.

I'm thinking, even if they get hot and get into a wild card game, his time is up in St. Louis. He should have been fired in 2014, but the public sentiment has shifted enough that his firing will generate very little uproar.

And I'm 90% sure the new manager will be internal, but the Mozeliak blessed kind of internal instead of DeWitt (who is generally accepted as being Matheny's main backer). Either Mike Shildt or Stubby Clapp, both stewards of the Cardinals strong minor league system over the last 5-10 years.

Middle of the season (preferred), or the end of the season, just have Matheny seriously gone.

I agree that it is likely an internal hire. I also think that way of thinking is what got us here. I like the LaRussa path better than us being a learning ground for a newbie.

If it is an internal move, why wait? A change might jump start a team that is mediocre at best. Label your internal pick as interim and have a look.

There is no reason to bring Matheny back after the break. Once you know you need to move on nothing good comes from holding on.

Not how we operate? Maybe we need to look closer at that. It seems we limit our outcomes at times.

They also fired Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller. Bench coach Mike Shildt set to be interim manager. Team has set a press conference for 11AM tomorrow.

This move was basically a matter of when not if it was going to happen. It's a little bit surprising for the ownership group to do this as they normally like to wait til the end of the season to make a change like this.

So glad it's happened. What a relief.

The Ax has fallen! The management actually listened to the fans for a change. I think this is a healing step to bring the coaching back in-line with the vision of Bill DeWitt and the organization. The cardinals way is about discipline but also teamwork and selflessness. I think matheny just road on the coat tales of his predecessor, and extinguished the enthusiasm and excitement of the young players.

Hot take & Early rumblings: Joe Girardi

I honestly thought the cards were going to hire him back in 2011 after Tony La Russa left. He had interest then and he is looking for a new Gig. I saw this reported by 12up sports.

Bernie on Twitter (has a different twist on Girardi, and other comments on firing)

"The lethargic and messy baseball aside, and crumbling player relations aside, I can share this: management was not happy with Matheny’s quotes in @markasaxon piece in @TheAthletic (1/2)"

"As I wrote for @TheAthleticSTL Friday, management uncomfortable with Matheny’s expressed zeal for old-school tough guy stuff and referring to today’s game as "soft" … felt (2/3)"

"That (3/3) whenever Matheny gets on the soapbox with old-school preaching that’s a huge turnoff to young players, it reinforced team’s rep as uptight, stressed, humorless and not a fun place to play."

"That’s why I was astonished by the attacks on @markasaxon ; without Matheny running his mouth and all but bragging over having Bud Norris being his enforcer/snitch, Saxon had much less to build his piece around. Today’s players are different. This manager never got that."

"If you go back and read the reporting on why Joe Girardi was sacked by the Yankees, you wouldn’t be so quick to assume he’s the right guy in STL. The ability to communicate-connect with young players, and all kinds of players, will be a priority in choosing next STL manager"

Maybe icing on the cake and absolutely part of the reason he had to go now but he was way past his shelf life. Hard gig to follow TL and he got a lot of miles off the coat tails. I hope the Cards get an experienced manager. Joe G is my pick of the names mentioned so far. Hard to predict that though. Cards often go right when the rest of us would go left. Drives me crazy.

Unfamiliar territory for us. This is the first time since Torre was fired in 1995. I understand why we went with Matheny after TLR and I was happy with it, but really wish we would’ve went for Tito Francona. I this Girardi is interesting, but before anyone gets too excited, let’s see who emerges.
