I like the Holland move, but I didn’t like out walk rate today. That was ugly. Need our pitching to be more crisp.

Who goes down (or out) when Holland arrives?

Tui is out of options as is Lyons. Bowman has options as does Hicks and Mayers. So it will be one of those 3.

Doubt it's Hicks, as they wouldn't have started his service time if they were just going to send him down. Mayers is good now if he can keep hitting 97. Matheny seems to think guys who can't strike anybody out like Bowman (Seth Maness a few years ago) are good to bring in with men on base, so hopefully he's the one he goes so I can quite yelling at the TV.

Holland signing is official. He'll report to Palm Beach and be down there for about 7-10 days before coming up.

Reyes moved to 60 day DL meaning he won't be back til late May at the earliest.

Cecil to 10 day DL and Sheriff called up from Memphis.

Cardinals have also made a minor trade with minor leaguer Josh Lucas (who was DFAed before the season) heading to Oakland for RHP Casey Meisner who will report to AA. This move was made necessary due to the bullpen and 40 man roster shuffling.

Here's some info from fangraphs on Meisner:
Meisner was acquired from the Mets for Tyler Clippard in 2015. His stuff has never bounced back after it evaporated following a mechanical change that was likely designed to get better actions on either of his breaking balls, which had long been behind his changeup and fastball. He’ll still flash a plus changeup, but both of his breaking balls and command remain below average. Also, his velocity ticked down after the tweak and has yet to completely bounce back.

Ozuna with an estimated 479 foot Home Run. His first as a Cardinal. This lineup is good enough to compete, just hope the pitching holds up over 162.

That was a blast! Remember one hit by Holliday there to centerfield.

New Bullpen same result as last year. Why Matheny can't plan ahead I will never understand.

Pitching Hicks with a 4 run lead on Monday was interesting. Could've been him in a one run game last night, instead he needed to use Leone for multiple innings to get the save and it backfired. He also double switched the 3 hole hitter out of the lineup last night, only to double switch again to have Greg Garcia come up in the top of the 9th. Why does he do this? It's his 6th year as manager and he hasn't made many, if any, improvements.

That's the main problem with Matheny, IMO. He doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes.

I'd be curious to get my fellow Cardinals fans take on this: https://www.si.com/mlb/2018/04/02/tommy-pham-st-louis-cardinals

So much to digest there. I’m not sure why he even agreed to do this article, it doesn’t make him or the cardinals look all that positive. Ultimately, he won the starting spot, so I feel like it’s water under the bridge and hope he has a good season. But I can’t imagine this will sit well with Matheny or the management.

Pham wanted an extension and $$$$. Cardinals weren't very interested. I expect him to be somewhere else next year. Obviously he feels as if the organization keeps passing him over. He's probably correct but now he's an aging player on a team with a ton of outfield prospects in a free agency era not favorable to players.

I thought I read they offered him maybe a 2 yr at a few million that he turned down. Isn't that where the "bet on myself" comment came from. Not saying he made a bad decision because if he plays well, he'll get a lot more, but it wasn't like they stiffed him and offered nothing. Pretty sure on that anyway.

I love Tommy Pham. I think he's still upset about making the opening day roster (and lineup) in 2016 then immediately getting hurt and barely playing in the majors that year.

He's rightfully upset about having to play a month in the minors last year while Matt Adams flailed away in LF. He was like the 3rd or 4th best player in the NL last year, and probably would have been the best if he actually got to play the whole year.

He's probably just upset his manager is a nincompoop.

Pham hit .226 in 2016 and didn't have a very good spring last year, either (.209 BA). He had shown flashes of promise, but he was not a proven MLB player one year ago, so it wasn't really surprising that he started the season in the minors. Matt Adams was clearly more highly regarded offensively, so the Cardinals tried him (unsuccessfully) in the outfield.

He should be ecstatic that he put everything together last year and had a great season, rather than worrying that he didn't get called up a week earlier than he did.

My biggest take away from that article was how badly baseball's system royally screws late-bloomers like Pham.

Coming off last season, he's still making MLB minimum wage. There are guys with a fraction of Pham's value making 10, 20 times more than he is. He'll get a bump with arbitration as long as he keeps his performance up, but unless he has an abnormally long prime, his career will basically be over by the time he reaches free agency.

When Bryant or Trout or Harper have an MVP caliber season making MLB minimum at age 23 or 24, they can at least be sure they'll eventually get paid. And as high round draft picks, they probably already cashiered a pretty significant signing bonus. Pham was a late round draft pick that didn't have his MVP caliber season until age 29. So he doesn't have that assurance. He's going to have to have a Joey Bautista-style aberration of a career to make serious bank.

I know, cry me a river for the guy making a half million dollars a year to play baseball. But he's watching peers like Lorenzo Cain and Dexter Fowler signing multi-year contracts that he's probably never going to have a chance to get.
