Texas Tech has hired Baylor associate head coach Joey McGuire as their new head coach.

McGuire has been an assistant at Baylor since 2017 after a long and successful career as a high school coach in the state of Texas.

That article doesn't provide the details on the restructure but it sounds like they dropped his buyout next year from $15M to $7.5M (and cut next year's salary from $5M to $4M). Honestly surprised they didn't force him into an even lower buyout. Never mind the bs about incremental progress, next year is clearly a win or go home year for Mr. Frost.

Underrated hire. Will look underwhelming to outsiders but McGuire is great dude, great recruiter and leader.

Any rumblings about getting a new OC at all or is TP getting another chance? Obviously one season is a whole lot of time and maybe the QBs don't fit the system, but it's been pretty ugly to watch.

Yeah TP is here for at least the 3 years. He was the first on the staff and he does what BB wants in having a possession ground and pound offense.

Bill Snyder at Kansas State comes to mind. Came into a mess in the late 80's and within 4 years or so had a perrenial top 20 team, but took 3 or 4 years. I think thay had lost something like 25 straight losses before he got there. There aren't many Bill Snyders out there, but that's the first name that came into this older guy's mind.
Bill Snyder is probably the best example out there. In 1988 Kansas State finished 0-11 under Stan Parish. Snyder took over the next year. He went 1-10 in year one, but by year three he finished 7-4, good enough for 4th in the Big Eight. Then in 1998 his team, lead by QB Michael Bishop, lost the Big XII title in TX A&M in 2OT, costing them a chance at the NC, and finished 11-2, losing their bowl game.

In 1988, I remember Kansas' only win that year was over K-State (Glen Mason was their coach). SI did an article on the two most hapless programs in the country at the time!

While, Kansas' football history has been up and down over the decades, Mark Mangino is another, more recent example of a coach who took over a deflated program, going 2-10 in year one (2002), and brought them to the top of CF, going 12-1 in 2007, winning the Orange Bowl. That team lost to hated rival Mizzou when the teams were ranked (amazingly) #2 and #3, which cost KU a shot at NC run. (Mizzou's shot at the NC was torched the next week in the Big XII title by OU.)

Bill Snyder could very well be the greatest coach in CFB history. K-State was without question the worst D1 FB school in history - not sure anyone was even close. So Snyder comes in and from 93-2000 won 9+ games each year, with 4 straight 11 win seasons. After a mediocre 2001, he won 11 in each of '02 and '03. He retired, came back, and within 2 years delivered another 10 win season.

One thing that makes me feel good about Bielema is he played or coached under 3 of the best developmental coaches out there in Fry, Snyder and Alvarez.

It's something, but I'm not sure it's much more than a guy signing up for an easy $6M+ (I believe it's 4 years at $1.5M+) with no expectations of winning anything. UConn football is a dumpster fire - they're now an "FBS Independent" which, along with $6.50 will get you a medium (oops, I mean tall) Starbucks. They're likely to play a schedule of 1-2 Ivy's, 1-2 Service Academies, a few mediocre Conf USA types, and a few away games as cannon fodder at P5 schools. No one of note is coming to the $h1t hole that they play at in Hartford.

He will get another year. If it is still similar to this year then I guess he would move on before year 3. TP shows bright spots with some drives he calls then other crap drives make you scratch your head. Also it doesn't matter who he hires as OC it is the offense will look similar to what it is this year.

I think you have to give him 3 full years. The roster will turn over significantly at the end of this year. As they get “their guys” into the system it should look a little better but still assume a year of development and acclimation to all the new pieces. The next year it should look way better with their guys + experience. If there isn’t growth after the process, you know you need to consider changes.

Any guesses on the next B1G opening? MSU if Tucker gets plucked or will he stay in the B1G since he played in it? Would think Allen gets a couple of more years to straighten things out at IU?

I think Tucker and Fleck are most likely to leave for a "better" job. Could see Franklin get fired as PSU thinks they are better than they are.

Next year is different because I could see a few more people jumping ship.

The fans in Minn have soured quickly on Fleck for their performance down the stretch. It was a bad time for him to lose. He’s probably a little big for his britches but I could see him bailing out of town at the next opening.

We could always use a solid OC that can recruit the Chicago area.

Didn't Minny just sign Fleck to a long term extension?
