Big Ten Football Coaches: Ranked by liklihood of remaining with current Program

1. Kirk Ferentz - departs when he's ready to retire
2. Paul Chryst - program still rolling
3. Ryan Day - secure; not going anywhere, unless the NFL comes calling
4. Greg Schiano - he's experimented elsewhere; now comfortable back at Rutgers; able to recruit to NJ; bowling in 2021!
5. Pat Fitzgerald - staying a Wildcat as long as he wants; but may get an NFL job at some point (Bears?)
6. Jim Harbaugh - Michigan alum; he's already been in the NFL; success in 2021 is a big plus; now just needs to defeat OSU
7. Mel Tucker - surprising early success; looks like he's locked-in for another several years; may have higher expectations?
8. Bret Bielema - very solid 1st year; but it's Illinois, and history tells us that no one stays here longer than 5 years
9. PJ Fleck - despite the new contract, betting he flies the coop when the "right" job surfaces
10. Tom Allen - has earned more time; but, not sure he's going to fully recover from the disastrous 2021
11. James Franklin - alumni base is growing impatient; 4-5 losses/year won't cut it
12. Mike Locksley - not sure he has a long-term future at MD, particularly given the competition in the Big 10 East
13. Jeff Brohm - speculating he will soon get plucked for a bigger job; 2022-23?
14. Scott Frost - surprised he survived 2021; predicting 2022 will be his last year

The top 5 are correct, Frost is definitely last, but in between I'd switch a lot around.

6. Brohm (If he was going to leave it would have been for a blank check at his alma mater and he didn't)
7. Bielema (Lovie essentially forced Whitman to give up on him. Bielema won't)
8. Allen
9. Fleck
10. Locksley
11. Harbaugh (still nowhere near OSU and one disaster season away from the end)
12. Tucker (He's the top of the "realistic" tier for every top job in the country right now)
13. Franklin

Agree with the movement of Brohm up that scale. He is the type of guy not looking towards a "big name" university. I could see him being a Ferentz type if he can continue having some success at Purdue.

Also, with regards to the OP mentioning Rutgers going bowling, hold up on that. Unlikely they will beat PSU on the road with PSU's backs against the wall, and then they host Maryland. That will be a test. Having said that, I do agree that Schiano has built plenty of time with his recruiting and will likely not leave again after the last time failed.

I agree with the first part, but the only person that believes the second is Pat Fitzgerald and his mom. Pat (and maybe his agent) started the rumors, kept trying to stoke the rumors, and I’m sure repeat the rumors when he’s recruiting (or feeling blue). I know the Bears “braintrust” is pretty light on any serious capabilities, but even they’re not stupid enough to hire that gasbag.

Minor quibble, but RT was here for 8 years and RZ for 7 years, both within the last 20 years

I would swap Tucker and Frost. Frost has one more season, and Tucker seems the most likely to go this year. He has a pretty thin resume as a head coach, so if he wants to jump, this is the year.

Rumor has it that Mel has LSU braintrust interested. He has worked as an assistant there and LSU did pretty well the last time they poached from MSU.

MSU is reportedly pretty close to a rather large extension for Mel Tucker. So he may be around for a while.

"Tucker could be looking at a salary that pays him in the $6.5-8 million range and makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in the Big Ten, behind Ohio State’s Ryan Day, and in the top-10 in college football."

While I kind of hope they win their last two games this year, it would be pretty funny if they ink that contract this week and then he goes all PJ the rest of the way.

No pressure.

I remember a small number of board members being very happy that Josh made his move last year. Who thinks we would come out as well if we were hiring this year? I think we'd be stuck trying to pick a winner from the MAC again, at best. Glad we are where we are, considering.
Measured, but a fairly positive outlook nevertheless from one who was pretty negative with the initial hire. I like it. Not calling you out at all, just appreciating where you are now vs your initial reaction.

To answer your question, I don’t know who we could land this year, but I think BB was our ceiling and getting someone equivalent would be a very long shot. As you can see, I’m pleased with where we are in spite of a couple play calls I didn’t like.

I have been very upfront about having my negative reaction to hiring a man characterized as a drunken frat boy. I didn't want that and am glad that isn't what we got. He hasn't proven himself yet, but there are certainly positive indicators. I'll be happier when we get past the inexplicably bad outings.

Coach B appears to be a good coaching hire. If we were bidding against Florida, LSU, Miami and/or whoever else is hiring by the end of the year, we wouldn't be competitive for a league winning coach. That's my point. Making the move last year was a smart decision by Josh. He deserves credit for it.
