So is Manning interim or has it gone that far yet?

a chorus of fan negativity had grown into a full-throated mob. He's been booed at Xfinity Center at times this season, and there have been chants about firing him.] per 217sports
Who knew it was that easy. Can we employ this strategy the next time a coach has overstayed his welcome? (hopefully not any time in the next decade)

Lol...if this really was fans and the environment chasing him out.....good luck to the next coach winning over those fans.
I was around terp fans as early as spring break in Florida circa 1970-71.....fastest talker's I have ever been around and they have a knack of getting under your skin ASAP......

But , the Scheyer -face threads were sweet back in those days ....One guy became famous for stalking Scheyer and pretending to be a fan and getting numerous pics to photoshop....i feel sorry for the next terp coach .....I really really do......................

Bruce Weber is probably on the hot seat at Kansas State after a couple of woeful seasons. Mark Turgeon, the Kansas native, would be a rather obvious match as a replacement if Weber is not the coach in fall 2022.

Start it earlier - Weber gets fired with last day on Dec 31 and Turgeon takes over Jan 1.

The guy is 21 months off winning a share of the regular season Big Ten title, a season when fans occasionally booed him and the team in their own building. I find the sense of entitlement around MD basketball supporters similar to that of Penn State football fans. Turgeon was a solid recruiter and coach and his teams were as consistently strong as could be reasonably expected. IlliniCA above is correct: UMD fans deserve this.

Manning (Turge's teammate at Kansas) was mediocre at Wake. Maybe he can make something of the current team this season. But you just can't coach and recruit at a place where your fans treat you with such disdain publicly as they did Turgeon. During the home loss to VA Tech on Weds fans started chanting "Fire Turgeon." He apparently walked off the court at the end of the game, encountered the AD in the tunnel, and started negotiating his exit.

Why did they hate him so much? He seemed to be a good guy who did a good job. Even the ones that are let go because they can't get the team to the 'next level', it's usually not met with such vitriol.

I have a good friend who played for MD in the late '60s and has remained close to the program over the years. I asked him this question when Turge was there. He says they've treated the guy badly because they were spoiled with Gary Williams and the success he had. Turgeon was never going to live up to him. And, as I noted, the fans there have an entitlement mentality (and a "Duke insecurity" from their decades in the ACC.) The place seemed fairly sleazy by the time Lefty Driesell departed in the late '80s (the sitch around Len Bias, e.g.), and Gary was its savior when he arrived. He stayed from more than 20 seasons and won them a Natty.

Perhaps my fellow DC-area Loyalty posters have other ideas.

It reminds me of the way Ohio State football fans treated Earle Bruce, the coach who replaced Woody Hayes. The guy had an 11-1 season, six 9-3 seasons, and a 10-2 season. [EDIT: 4 BT titles in his first 8 seasons and two 2nd-place finishes. But only two Rose Bowls in eight years, and he lost them both.] He then went 5-3-1 in '87 and was fired the Monday before the Michigan game. He wasn't Woody. Fans never warmed to him. He didn't schmooze the boosters sufficiently, he was terse, and didn't like public speaking. The only thing he could do was coach really well, which was insufficient. Then they hired John Cooper and did much worse than that for 13 seasons.

I actually think I'd rather play Maryland with Danny Manning.
I would, too.

Turgeon is tight with Manning. Some this weekend have speculated he hired Manning in the off-season as a plant so he could exit if he got fed up and leave the team with his friend. That sounds absurd but this situation is absurd.

I'm struggling to recall when, if ever, a power conference coach walked away at this point in a season and it wasn't because of health problems. I mean, when was the last time you saw a coach of this stature (66% wins @ MD; 57% in conference) walk off the court after a home loss in early December and say "F-- it, I'm outta here."

I gotta know... Is this because of how awesome Danny Manning was at Wake? Or because of how bad Turgeon has sucked his entire tenure at Maryland...
I think he will recruit at a much higher level, x’s and o’s I don’t think it’s much different? But I’m not that most knowledgeable with these two for that. It’s mostly a recruiting potential reason that I get that feeling

No Ryan quit in December at Wisconsin and he had multiple years of good teams
