2021-22 College Hoops Coaching Carousel

Reports are that it is around 1/3 of what his contractual buyout was. Not sure why coach Mack would agree to that but it is crazy if accurate. My understanding is that they are still awaiting possible sanctions (?) and that may be a mark against quality candidates applying?
Apparently his contract said buyout was 0 if the NCAA found level 1 or 2 infractions. He saw the writing on the wall He will probably get a job on ESPN and coach in 3 years

I’m sure the NCAA will come down in them with the force of 1000 balloons.

Borzello thinks that Louisville should go after Cronin or Pearl. If either of those don't work, the next best option may be Kevin Willard at Seton Hall, who is a Pitino protégé. He thinks buyout money would take names like Nate Oats, Eric Musselman and Mike Boynton off the list as options.

It was time for Mack to go.Yep, buyout could go to zero or be $12 million. It will go out somewhere in between. Fan base was restless. His on court performance was not good and fans had started to boo him. I think more NCAA sanctions are on the way. This is not the destination job it once was. Pencil in the name Kenny Payne.

They hired a guy with no experience because he is a local legend. He cheated to get those stud recruits, and now that everyone can pay players, recruiting doesn't look so promising. They ran a potential Hall of Fame coach in Tubby Smith out after 2 years. Memphis did this themselves.

Others are right. They need to bring in an old experienced guy to be the actual coach and let Penny be the figurehead, or he's got to go. His record has got 1 game worse each year, despite a ton of talent. No NCAA tournament appearances. If they want to win, they should probably find a coach that knows what he's doing.

The recruiting will be interesting. Their 2022 class is one guy ranked over 200. Looking at their 2023 prospects, it looks like they're in on a lot of 5 star guys but may realistically get 1 at best. After that, it could be another bad class. Penny's coaching without an extreme talent advantage is going to create some pretty ugly records.
Penny's biggest problem on O is that he tries to get balanced scoring and equal shots for everyone. He needs to let his two super recruits get the majority of the shots and take over games.

Louisville has resolved the Mack buyout at $4.8 million. Because these DIA's are hurting financially due to pandemic look for them to go cheap and hire alum Kenny Payne.

I am sure that he will be fine. He's a good coach in his early 50's. If that Butler job comes open, I would expect Mack will get a look.
I always thought it was weird that Mack left his alma mater for another job. I could get it depending on the circumstances- like if you were going to get fired or if the place was a mess and you were not treated well as a coach or team. Don't think that was the case with Mack. But other than that, I would think it would be awfully tough to leave your alma mater for another school. If I had been a successful coach at Illinois for 10 years, even if Duke or UNC or UCLA wants to hire me, I am not going.

His wife was from Louisville. And $. But yeah, it didn't seem like a good fit from the get go.

Mack lost the team and being suspended for six games did not help. Yes his wife grew up in Louisville. He gets around 4.5 million buyout. Now the talk on sports radio here in Louisville is either getting Kenny Payne or guess, Bruce Pearl. They are saying he might have put his name out to get more money from Auburn. Auburn doesn't have its own basketball facility. I laughed when I heard the name Pearl. Have at it Louisville. But I think Payne is the next coach at UofL.

Well if they want to get back to dirty cheating like Pitino, Pearl is the guy.

In our latest episode of Coaching College Basketball is Hard, we present the case of Chris Mack.He is one America’s best basketball coaches. At Xavier, he won two regular season titles in the Atlantic 10 and one after the school moved to the Big East.Mack took Xavier to the NCAA Tournament eight times in nine years. He probably never should have left that job, but Louisville came calling and he took the big money to go down the road from Cincinnati. He went 20-14 in his first season with the Cardinals and reached the Big Dance. He would have returned there in 2019-20 with a 24-7 team, but COVID-19 intervened. The pandemic messed up last season, too, as Louisville finished 13-7 and missed the tournament. That COVID-impact season produced all sorts of upheaval, including discord over handling the pandemic and the firing of his assistant coaches. One of them, Dino Gaudio, tried to extort extra severance pay by threatening to disclose minor NCAA rules violations.

Interesting article about Mack. He never should have left Xavier. But their list of potential coaches is just a list of names. I do not see Brad being remotely interested. And throwing Matt Painter's name out is laughable - he used Missouri once to get a raise (and based on what Purdue was paying him under their previous AD, probably rightly so). Louisville is a cesspool right now - and the only name the article mentioned that thrives in cesspools was Pearl, whom the author discounted as being too dirty.

Hearing from multiple people in the know that Kenny Payne to Louisville is a done deal.
I lived in Louisville for about 6 months working on the railroad when I was 20 years old.....had my 1969 Camaro convertible Indy pace car stolen there and was too young to rent a car ....took 20 hour bus ride from L-ville to Evansville stopping at every podunk town in between.....

So I say Luck Fouisville.............................
