I thought 9 minutes was an awful lot of stoppage time, but then my sister said some match in this tournament had +18.

I read somewhere that when they analyzed the actual time of play in the last World Cup it averaged out at like 58 minutes a game. The long stoppage times are a result of FIFA trying to get actual play times closer to 90 minutes.

Most impressed by Tyler Adams and Yunus Musa today. Like what Aaronson brought off the bench as well. If this team had more dependable forward play they would've put this one away much more easily. I commented to my dad before the game that if you could put prime Clint Dempsey on this team they'd be legit.
100% goal scorer like Dempsey is exactly what this team needs

The McKennie, Musah, Adams midfield has been incredible. With our defense this solid, we can go as far as anyone. Us and Brazil are the only 2 teams to not allow an open play goal, and of course Brazil hasn't played their 3rd game yet.

Obviously, not looking past the Netherlands because that is an extremely tough match...but I like to create rooting interests in the other games. So here is how to have the easiest path to the Final (a man can dream).

Potential Quarterfinal:

Group C 1st - We want Poland to win/draw against Argentina
Group D 2nd - Anyone but France (very likely)

Potential Semifinal:

Group E 1st - We want Japan/Costa Rica to finish 1st over Germany/Spain. There are a few paths to this but the most likely is Japan beating Spain.
Group F 2nd - Hopefully Morocco. But if not then Croatia over Belgium
Group G 1st - Almost guaranteed to be Brazil
Group H 2nd - Take you pick between Uruguay, S Korea, and Ghana. I'm picking Uruguay because I think they have the best chance to upset Brazil

Still have to find goals and that has been a struggle. Yesterday was a closer call than it should've been simply because we couldn't find that 2nd goal. Iran got close to equalizing a few times. A higher quality opponent in the knockout stage will be more likely to punish us for that.

IMO, it's a pretty easy problem to solve. They need to do post-match reviews and assign yellow cards for diving. These yellows would count towards suspensions, etc., just as if they were issued in-game.

The NHL does post-game reviews with fines and public announcements to shame the players for diving. Seems to work pretty well.
My proposal to solve flopping is to just implement Gaelic football's approach to injuries. Basically you just ignore the injured player and keep going as if nothing happened. If a player actually needs medical attention or a stretcher, you just play around it until there's a valid stop in play lol (i.e goal, out of bounds, rule violation, etc.). Not a perfect solution of course, as there can be genuine fouls, but it'd definitely deter flopping and encourage the fouled player to get right back up!

I tend to think that basketball has a worse flopping problem than soccer, so I don't believe flopping is why Americans can't get into it. Not that Europeans don't make fun of the floppers too, but imagine someone running 10 laps and then doing a 50 yard sprint. Then have someone push them over at the end of that running...that person just isn't going to pop back up like football wide receivers who play a few dozen plays over 4 hours.
I have seen them play on when a player is down and they do review fouls/flopping if it's critical like in the penalty box.

I think the big difference between soccer and the more popular American sports is that soccer is much more of an endurance based sport which has its own pros and cons.

Tata Martino and Mexico have parted ways after El Tri's exit from the World Cup. First time since 1978 that they have not gotten out of the group stage in a World Cup (They were banned from the 1990 World Cup due to the Cachirules scandal involving at least 4 overage players being used on their U-20 squad in the 1988 CONCACAF U-20 Tournament, which led to FIFA banning all Mexican national teams from international competition through the 1990 World Cup).

With Tata out, clearly there's one man who should replace him:

Alright, my first team (and true squad), USMNT, is through and I’m stoked for a 9:00 am watch party this Saturday! U-S-A!!

Now, to truly enjoy the knockout stage, I need my second team (the team of my ancestors!), Germany, to sneak through today! For being in last place, they have an amazingly realistic way to advance…

🤞🏻🇩🇪

Japan and Spain through from Group E. Morocco and Croatia through from Group F. Germany and Belgium among the teams heading home.

U.S. is the last remaining CONCACAF side. And after having zero sides qualify to the knockout round in 2018, Africa has 2 countries through to the Round of 16 with potentially two more (Cameroon and Ghana) able to qualify tomorrow.
