Portugal did end up defeating Vietnam 2:0. That means for the U.S. to go through to the knockouts, they have to defeat Portugal early Tuesday morning. To win the group, U.S. has to win and keep their current +2 GD over the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, we may be seeing another upset in the making as Nigeria is currently leading the co-host Australia 1:3 late in the 2nd half.

If that result holds, then things could get mighty interesting for the Matildas in their final group stage match against Canada on Monday.
I think the US only needs to draw against Portugal to get through, no?

to advance, yes. could also win the group if we draw and netherlands either draws or loses. i'm sure there are plenty of articles out there already about all the possible permutations of our group placement.

Andronovski is getting criticized for his game plan, and its clear the US lineup hasn't come together into form. I'm very glad that I got to watch this game, and overall I felt encouraged. We just played the WWC runner up team to a draw despite massive roster turnover, and them having the same core group. That's impressive.

I found the first half frustrating to watch, despite it being largely what I expected: Andronovski putting the young crew out there to sink or swim, with some veterans for structural support. The young guns have to grow up fast or we won't win the Cup, so he's putting them in the fire and challenging them to gel. But Lavelle clearly changed the tone of the game, and you could see the team grow in confidence and play more fluid in the second half. So while they really need to gel before their attacks amount to more than extraordinary individual efforts, the ingredients are clearly there.

I view that match as perhaps their toughest test, because it came so early...only the second time that lineup had ever been used. If the team comes together in time to start clicking on the field, they'll be in great shape. But we're going to see breakdowns all the way through the semi's, both missing opportunities on offense and giving up shots on goal defensively. If they can survive those long enough gel, we should make the final.

^This. As I mentioned above, if they win and the Dutch win, the U.S. just has to maintain their +2 GD. If both sides are tied based on points and GD, then the next tiebreaker is goals scored (U.S. currently at 4, Netherlands currently at 2).

Huge difference in the path to the final between top spot and second in the group

Exactly. If they win the group, they face the runner-up in Group G (currently Italy). If they finish 2nd, they face the winner of Group G (currently Sweden).

Had they had everything secured, I would have skipped Tuesday's match because of the start time. I'm now considering altering my sleep schedule to get up and watch that match.

Rough timing.
DVR, and watch in the morning for me.

One of the co-hosts out as Norway defeated the Philippines 6:0 and Switzerland and New Zealand played to a 0:0 draw early today. Switzerland and Norway go through from Group A (Norway finish tied on points with New Zealand but goes through on GD).

In the knockout round, Switzerland will face the loser of tomorrow's match between Spain and Japan. Norway will face the winner of that match. If Spain/Japan ends in a draw, then Switzerland faces Japan and Norway faces Spain.

Bummer for New Zealand - drew the group winner (Switzerland) and beat the 2nd place team (Norway), who they tied on points, but fail to go through because they lost to the last place team (Philippines) while Norway ran up a 6-0 win against Philippines today.

China getting knocked out yesterday is the first time that they have not made it out of the group stage in a Women's World Cup (they didn't qualify in 2011).

Brazil and Jamaica currently in a 0:0 draw late in the 2nd half. If this result holds, the Brazilians will be heading home after the group stage for the first time since 1995.

Could potentially be adding Germany to the group of highly ranked teams out in the group stage if things don't change here in the next 20 or so minutes. Would be the first time the Germans haven't ever made it out of the group stage in the Women's World Cup.

For those not wanting to get up early tomorrow morning for Sweden-USWNT, the replay of the match will air on FS1 at 9:30 AM CT and again at 7:30 PM CT.
I'm guessing the live airing is on FOX? If so I can't watch it anyway because the company that owns our local Fox and WB Affiliate is having a spat with DirecTV right now. So FS1 replay it is for me.

Yes, the live airing is on FOX. May want to avoid spoilers if you can.
I remember watching an Illini game replay on FS1 in The morning. Missed the live game day before. They will also show the score on the ticker below, fyi. Thought it was the ticker from the actual game, but no. Knew the score of the replay then. I wanna say Illini vs Arizona from a few years ago.

Yeah that can happen sometimes. That's why DVR is good to use if you can though with the knockouts you may want to add extra time onto the recording if you can't watch an event live.

And the USA crash out in the round of 16. Dominated the game but got punished for not taking their chances. Sweden never looked like they were going to score in the 120 minutes. But you don’t deserve to win if you miss the target on 3 penalties. Especially twice when the goalie has already gone the other way.

It is greatly disappointing that this was the best performance they had and it still wasn't enough. Performances like today make you wonder where it was in the group stage. Now they're going home before the semis in the Women's World Cup for the first time ever. Based on how they've done in their two major tournaments since Andonovski took over, it wouldn't surprise me if he lost his job.

He has certainly gotten a lot of criticism, but we finally got a glimpse of what the team could look like if they were clicking. When the young guns start seeing the pitch the same, they'll start connecting and having fun. This was not the effective hand-off from the Olds to the Youngs everyone wanted, but whether they replace the coach or not, they won't have that problem next time, as the Olds won't be back again (for the most part). Pino's legs let her down (probably why she wasn't being used much, previously) and without Lavelle to energize the middle and create breakout opportunities, they just didn't have enough to carry the day. But they played a couple of good teams with a real chance to win it all, and hardly gave an inch. So while we like to pretend the prior two Cups were completely dominant, the reality is they haven't slipped much at all, despite the turnover.

Hard times to view, but I expect the next version of this team to really have a fire in their bellies. They have nothing to be ashamed of; they had a real chance to advance. Winning is hard.
