Andronovski is getting criticized for his game plan, and its clear the US lineup hasn't come together into form. I'm very glad that I got to watch this game, and overall I felt encouraged. We just played the WWC runner up team to a draw despite massive roster turnover, and them having the same core group. That's impressive.
I found the first half frustrating to watch, despite it being largely what I expected: Andronovski putting the young crew out there to sink or swim, with some veterans for structural support. The young guns have to grow up fast or we won't win the Cup, so he's putting them in the fire and challenging them to gel. But Lavelle clearly changed the tone of the game, and you could see the team grow in confidence and play more fluid in the second half. So while they really need to gel before their attacks amount to more than extraordinary individual efforts, the ingredients are clearly there.
I view that match as perhaps their toughest test, because it came so early...only the second time that lineup had ever been used. If the team comes together in time to start clicking on the field, they'll be in great shape. But we're going to see breakdowns all the way through the semi's, both missing opportunities on offense and giving up shots on goal defensively. If they can survive those long enough gel, we should make the final.
