I’m getting a little tired of hearing how great the big ten is.

Who are the people saying this? In fact, there have been so many comments about the conference underperforming in the tournament, I'm unsure I've even seen a single comment stating the B1G is "great". There has also been a strong narrative here that some of the reason for it is how the league games are officiated vs. all other conferences.

Your method would eliminate the storylines behind a #8 seeded Villanova in 1985, or a 2014 #7 UCONN, or a #6 Kansas winning a National title in 1988. The beauty of the current format is "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus", and every single team in the nation has a chance to take a grab at the golden ring. Even those of us deluded Loyalty fans saw a path this year to a natty (those were some THICK orange glasses!)

A playoff system such as you propose is already used by the NBA, and it is BORING. Outside of the fans of teams involved, no one tunes into game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. Tens of millions tune into opening weened of March Madness (one reason the NCAA takes in over $1,000,000,000 for this two weeks alone.

I'll take a hard pass, but thank you for asking. :hailtotheorange:
Wasnt playing devils advocate. This was what I was looking for logical reasons. We could argue that we have missed out on some great series opportunities though. How about a best of 5 or 7 when we lost to Michigan and Carolina.

I would like to hear some reasons why. The only thing people can come up with is the nostalgia of the tournament. It truly does not prove a CHAMPION.
the current format makes the NCAA tons of money and generates nationwide excitement for 3 weeks .

it’s not about trying to find a “fair” way to crown a champion ala the NBA and never will be .

not sure you fully understand what it’s about .

The NCAA Tournament is both a blast to follow and a horribly inefficient way to determine the "best team". I don't want to watch Best of 7's between the top 16 rated teams (essentially just the 1-4 seeds), but I think that would make the most "worthy" champion. I think it's OK to just like it for what it is, without overly taking it too seriously. Whomever wins the tournament deserves to the be the champion because that's how the champion is determined, but they are not necessarily the best team imo.

This is why we would see a real national champion if we did a playoff in college basketball. Top 8 or 16 teams in a SERIES style playoff would give us a true champion. 1 and your done is no way to see who is really the best. Id like to see a 5, 5, 7 game series format. Tournament makes for some exciting games but we hardly ever see the best team in the country win it all.
The goal of the tournament isn't to crown the top team with a high degree of accuracy. The goal of the tournament is to make as much money as possible. They happen to crown a pretty good team in the process. The maximize the revenue by maximizing the viewership. There are those of us, myself included, who find the NBA playoffs uninteresting. Yes, the better team generally wins the series. That isn't why we watch. I expect the revenue from the series would be far less than that generated by the current system. Only a few school fanbases would care. I may watch PSU play another team once. I'm absolutely not watching the series (and would probably not watch any). With the majority of the conferences having no representatives, their entire conference fan base disappears.

Another issue with a series is that even an 8 team series requires an (up to) 17 games for the 8 top teams. With a game every other day that is 34 additional days for games in the middle of the semester. Going to 16 teams would add another 10 days. If the games are not all in a single location, add additional travel days.

The World Cup and the NCAA Tournament are probably the two best sporting championships in the world -- Fun. Exciting. Relatively condensed. Broad appeal. Exceptionally well-run and managed.

And they both do a pretty good job of crowning one of the best teams in that particular sport, in that particular year.

Yes, if a 1 seed wins the tournament, then cumulative body of work, tournament included, does probably make them the "best" aka "most worthy" team. Like Purdue and Kansas obviously aren't it, since they got beat too early, so their overall resume isn't as good as somebody that's gonna beat a bunch more top teams. Sometimes you get random teams winning, but less often. A few years back, you had Gonzaga vs. Baylor in the Championship, and ideally you'd say "best of 7" (or even 5, or even 3) to determine who was better, but you knew one of those two was the rightful "best team/champion"

I understand completely. I just don't see how this adds up and ends with the argument that a coach is no good if he can't get far in the tourney. It can't be both fellas, you can't judge a coach by tourney success only if the tourney itself is not a good measure of a great team.

I’m getting a little tired of hearing how great the big ten is. Pretty sure we put the same number of teams in the sweet sixteen as Podz new conference did.

Until the big ten actually cleans up the officiating and joins the 21st century, there’s no point pretending like we are in some world beating league.

The teams in the big ten are all decent because home court is ridiculous in the big ten because of how bad the officials are. Plain and simple.
If I never hear or read "Podz" again, I will be near as happy as if we won a natty.

If you wanted to increase the chances that the "best" team would win the tournament, give buys to the top seeds. Add more teams but the 2 seeds don't play until the field of 32 and the 1 seeds don't play until the field of 16. All of these are totally dumb ideas. It's a tournament to declare a winner. Not an effort to find the "best" team however you choose to define "best". (Best is normally biased by who do I pull for :) ).

I think people that are judging BU’s coaching by the performance of Illinois these past 3 years in the NCAA tourney are crazy

At some point he needs to win some games in mid March and get us to a FF . But he’s got a long leash in my opinion . some people need a lot more patience .

This year was disappointing , but more so in the regular season and BTT. I’ve seen prep JV teams shoot better . most of that is on the players. I had no expectations of winning any games last week .
