I wonder if the lack of non-con games this year (there were fewer in the end, right?) made it harder to compare across conferences. Certainly any computer rankings like KenPom rely on inter-conference games to determine the relative strengths of the teams... could be the B1G overperformed in a small sample size early on, and looked great the rest of the year as a result (until now).

They have too. If a bunch of conference teams get "pre-ranked" really high, and all they do is play each other, they are going to stay high. SOS really distorted the Kenpom rankings. I think the efficiency numbers that Loyola put up in a bad conference tho were absolutely relevant

Did all the Big Ten teams stay in Indy after the B10 tournament? Maybe that wasn't a great idea to sequester the teams for an extra week, compared to other conferences. Illinois, Ohio State, Iowa, and MSU all seemed to lack energy in their games. Maybe after a year of COVID and being trapped in a hotel for 2 weeks, you start to lose your edge...
Yep, I'm thinking that is probably a factor, especially if the 2 M's also lose today.
Win and you get to "live" another week in a hotel room!!! not exactly a great motivator.
Hopefully next season this virus is under reasonable control.

This might be the most disasterous post season in Big Ten history, regardless of sport. They were viewed as the best conference in the country, got nine teams in the tournament, two #1's, two #2's, a #4 all based on conference reputation. It's becoming a very real scenario that not one team is going to make it to the second weekend. I'm not sure that's ever happened.

It really cheapens a lot.
I have mentioned in several game and post game threads that the conference really needs to examine how they are managing games, scheduling and overall style of play during conference season. It is becoming more and more apparent, in my opinion, that the conference is not prepared for the NCAA each and every year. It has been now, barring a Mich run to the championship, 21 years since the last B10 national champion. Something has to change in order to prepare the teams for the dance. Go to a more free style of play, stop allowing the beating down low and calling all touch fouls out top. Look inward B10. But given the current lack of leadership I do not expect any of that to take place.

I wonder if it would be in the B1G’s interest to cut down the number of conference games to allow more ooc matchups? Seems like having the opportunity to play a wider variety of styles might be helpful. I know not all B1G play the same style, but we know the players, their tendencies, etc. Might be better to face teams you need to adjust to for one game.

I also live in PAC 12 terrain and don’t wanna hear any sh!* from a bunch of uninformed fair weather fans.
PAC 12 are fair weather fans. They come late to games and on the phones while they are watching games

The Big 10 has never had very many elite athletes and that was true this season as well. Just looking at the top 6 teams in the B10, the only elite athletes I see are Kofi and Ivey from Purdue. Ayo is in the mix too.

Having guys who can switch everything on the perimeter helps shut down the pick and roll offense which Big 10 teams primarily run. Look at Oregon today and how many long and bouncy dudes they had.

I was thinking about this as well, but those same models loved Loyola, so...
Maybe the human selection element is screwing the tournament tournament. Clearly we got some wrong seeding by many teams... Cade and Ayo is sexier than Kurtwig... who likes a pilsbury doughboy..

may just turn it all over to analytics to do the bracket selection

I think the only team that has a shot against Gonzaga is Alabama, because they'll take 40-45 threes and if they get hot they can win. But other than them, I don't see any team that has a prayer at keeping up with them.

Not wanting to start anything crazy here, just asking to see if my opinion is off... Is Kofi an "elite" athlete? He is huge and has the ability to dominate a game, but if he was Ayo's height would he be athletic enough to be a college basketball player? Not saying he is or isn't, just something that pops into my head when watching him.

Not sure I understand the question. Kofi can be considered an "elite" athlete because of what he can do at his size and height. It's hard for me to know how to evaluate a person's athleticism in a vacuum where their actual height, weight, and body type are not considered. But maybe that's just me.

Good point and I agree. I guess my thought was an elite athlete would have the ability to guard Krutwig near the top of the key.
