Recruiting, especially in the wild west NIL/portal era, is king. If you believe that, the choice makes sense. One thing Bielema has proven is that he gets the modern CFB/P5 landscape and necessity to adapt to it.
And Bielema had two years to get an up-close and personal view of both Henry's and Kane's abilities in this new landscape, and made his choice thusly.

you know, we should have anticipated this. recruiting pic's with BB and AH on the road and Kane no where to be found.....
when it was said that Kane was not on the recruiting trail on Thursday, that was a tip he was likely not staying.
What we didnt know then, was Henry going to be DC, or someone else (JL? ) coming in.
I think its worked out pretty good so far.

from 0440: " Bret chose Henry over Kane. Bret made his choice and whoever the didn’t get it was going to Purdue."

read this and think about BB's position. He kept the recruiter and knows he can coach.
I mean, do I even need to say it?

Unlike basketball, the utility of hiring position coaches in football because of specific names they will bring with them (or increase your chances) is rarely worth the opportunity cost. This doesn't mean that hiring recruiters is a waste, quite the opposite! Just don't hire a guy thinking it will land you 2-3 specific commits (unless it's a bonafide star QB). The portal is amplifying the fluidity of rosters to an extreme degree. The hiring of C-Patt was considered a massive coup at the time, mostly because Lovie's staff and a serious dearth of recruiters, and a number of players did flow into the program under his guidance. The return on that investment looks very......mixed.

Primary Recruiting

- Lovie Staff -
Isaiah Williams
Shammond Cooper
James Frenchie
Josh Phlor
Reggie Love
Moses Okpala
Griffin Moore
Kevin Tyler
Keith Randolph

- Bielema Staff -
Kaden Feagin
Aidan Laughery
Zy Crisler
Antwon Hayden

IW and Randolph are vital pieces for both sides of the ball. Love was a solid 2nd RB this year and could get more carries next year. The rest of that list are guys buried on the depth chart or have transferred out to lower level programs. The Bielema era list has potential but it's so early and unfair to judge to a list of fully developed college players. It does show that the attention being paid to St. Louis area recruits has substantially dwindled under Bielema, as only one of his signees resides in St. Louis. This could be a reason that Patterson (or Bielema) believes his future is better served elsewhere.

will BB bring in Holecek? he supposedly doesn't want to recruit nationally... but give him Illinois (1/3 of recruits?) where EVERY coaching staff and kid will open their door. Use him selectively with LBs and top D recruits nationwide. Imagine him selling his 8 years in pros and Illini carer at with Hardy, Howard, Rice -- whom he can probably leverage in real time time. Holecek is perfectionist who has excelled at every level... HS, College, NFL, HS coaching (fastest to 100 wins, retiring HS with best win percentage, national prominence, coach of year awards) - structure something to get him into Illinois program. Guy bleeds Orange and blue and has kid (or kids?) attending here. Why not get him and Howard to help with bowl defensive staff, where down 2.. Purdue bringing in Brees - even if its a publicity place, don't see recruit downside.

With all due respect to Holocek, I think it's doubtful that he's a legit candidate. No doubt about his coaching chops, but recruiting is a young (or younger) man's game.

I agree with your logic. However there probably won’t be any new P5 head coaching positions open up. Also I am not sure if an NFL team outside of Green Bay will offer him a DC job.

I am sure he could go to the NFL as a safety coach or he could be AHC somewhere in college. I have no inside knowledge but from an outsider that is what I see. Obviously he has an agent and might already know what he is gonna do and needs time to execute or he is trying to figure it out
I hear you and I’m not thinking he gets an NFL DC job, but I’ll be surprised if he comes here to be the safeties coach or a co-DC.

Jim Leonhard is not coming here. He was a great P5 DC, has just been a B10 interim head coach, and was offered to be DC for the Packers last year.

I don’t think that just because he was passed over for a HC position for possibly the biggest coaching target on the board, that his stock has fallen so much that he’s coming here to be a Co-DC or Safeties coach.
He’s coming. Relax.

I just listened to Coach B's press conference talking about hiring Aaron Henry as DC.

Wow. Love the thoughtfulness and details he put into the press conference in how he came to hiring Henry. Pretty cool. He is an impressive CEO. Listen to it, if you haven't!
