I am devastated. This stings as bad as the Loyola lost. I really do think Adam was starting to show better glimpses of a 3 level scorer. particularly in the mid range game. I think people here are undervaluing what he did for the year versus what he's actually capable of doing. I was expecting him to make a huge sophomore leap and now I just hope it isn't for a conference foe.
I feel the same way! He was about to show the nation what he was capable of and what he's shown in the high-school and AAU ranks for a long time next year! Wish he'd have stayed!

Adam loves Illinois and didn't want to leave but ultimately his Mom is forcing him to. Honestly can't make this stuff up.

Mad about the way he was used/not used and saw the writing on the wall that he won't make it to the league in 1-2 years with how ball dominant Curbelo will be. They think Adam needed the ball in his hands more as an undersized NBA guard..not many 6'3" shooting/combo guards going in the first round.

Also - his Mom has been a pain in the Staff's !!! for at least the past month. Adam has been the buffer to calm her down and smooth it over.

Simply business decision by his handlers.
If this is true, that's unfortunate. Same thing happened with Alan Griffin last year and is happening again this year. I expect Adam to be a dynamic player in the college ranks. I disagree that he had average athleticism for his size. He had more than average athleticism and would've been a featured player next year. I think sometimes there needs to be a reality pill that players and parents can take to truly get a sense for where their children are at this point in time and what they need. I admit that as a parent, it's tough to not see your child through rose colored glasses and think they deserve more. But it took Ayo 3 years to reach his potential and Adam just completed his first on a nationally recognized team as a starter and a contributor!! I mean, what more could you have asked for?!

So can someone shed some light on just how the Transfer Portal thing works????....If AM has entered the Portal does he still retain his scholarship and position on the team until he signs with another school????......or is his scholarship open now.....this could put BU and the coaching staff in a very difficult position if they offer Tyty or NB a scholarship and weeks later AM decides to withdraw his name from the Portal and return to UI.....seems like this new transfer option could get very complicated going forward
Yea, some players will end up stuck in the portal. Football has the same problem. For a lot of these kids transferring the grass isn't greener on the other side and their best shot for a scholarship was with the team that already guaranteed them one for 4 years.

From what I can find, we are not obligated to take him back - the scholly is open for use as soon as he entered the portal. Per the linked article:

Thanks Mr. R

Just shows you how special the group of Giorgi, Damonte, Trent and Ayo are. They all had many down moments, especially two years ago.

Ayo despite giving the University and fans more than he ever received, kissed the Illini floor on his last game. Shows you his character and love for the school.

We don't know what happens behind the scenes, wish AM would of stayed. But once again we don't know all the circumstances.

This makes sense! He definitely needs to show he can run the point abilities and facilitate and make plays offensively! He needs to at least be like a Mike Conley type player. He has a very high IQ so I think he will be fine. I know the parents have only their kids best interest in mind, but sometimes you have to step back out of the way and allow the process! But I wish them well! Yet I agree that he couldn't have found a bigger and brighter stage to develop and succeed on than here at Illinois like Ayo did!

I don’t have the knowledge to do so.. sorry. Could someone use their research knowledge and find out where Adam was ranked:

minutes a game vs all freshman
shots per game vs all freshman

I’m gathering from everything I have read is this.. when Ayo went down, mon expected that Adam would take over the point. He did not, she whined and moaned to coach. I personally think his game went to another level when Ayo was out. Became much more assertive and I loved what I saw. Then the capper was Ayo’s family getting more tickets then poor Mrs. Miller! So she whined some more. Loved Adam‘s game, but as a coach of manny teams over the years, parents can ruin everything good a kid has to offer. It is a shame. I wish nothing but the best for Adam, for his moms’s sake, well, neve mind!

Would love to buy you a beer or six for helping this old dude out!

thanks

As an insult, “prima donna” implies that the person under discussion is egotistical, demanding, and doesn’t work well as part of a team. This was my first thought that he is a prima donna. Mark, I mean Alan, no I mean Adam could see the writing on the wall and is moving on. He thought he was going to be the star of this team, a one and done, but he couldn't be even the best freshman on the team, let alone the overall best player. Possibly the best hair though, not sure. He brought a lot to this team and played some of the best defense I have seen in a freshman. Good luck to him wherever he goes. I hope it is well outside of the Midwest and Big 10. Possibly he could join someone else at K-State. That would be good. They have a lot in common. Their families would probably get along for at least a while.

They really don't have a lot in common other than transferring out of our program. Smith was a whiner who didn't work hard (allegedly). Miller worked his tail off and loved this team and is leaving to appease a parent (allegedly). These are completely different cases.

I guess I just don't truly understand the NBA dream stuff. I mean I get it because it's potentially generational wealth, but if there's one sport where you can make a hell of a good living playing at the non-elite professional level, it's basketball. Like if you play football it's pretty much NFL or bust. Maybe CFL. If you play baseball, you better get a big signing bonus, otherwise you're playing for peanuts until you breakthrough to the majors, or in most cases get churned out after a few seasons in the minors. With basketball, if you're just kind of ok you can find a league around the world that will pay you. And if you're relatively good, you're getting paid very well. I don't know if this is me on my soap box or what, but I know of good low major, and even D3 players that have played professionally overseas getting a solid paycheck and virtually no expenses. I guess it's hard for me to wrap my mind around the thought that playing a few years of basketball while on full scholarship and then pulling in 6 figures with no expenses, is somehow not a pretty damn nice gig.

With Adam Miller, he's a damn good player and had/has potential to be a star. He could still develop PG skills, it's not impossible. Luther Head was a 6'3" shooting guard who developed better PG skills and ultimately worked himself into a first round pick, while playing with 2 more prominent PGs. It's not impossible. Even if he doesn't become a true PG or make the league, he will still be able to make a very comfortable living playing basketball.

Maybe Mark's mom should look how Mark Smith's transfer worked out for him. Mark should have stayed at U of I. And Adam's mom will realize this was not well thought out.
No like everyone today that makes bad decisions, they will go on social media and blame everyone else.

It’s unfortunate for Miller he’s not able to be where he wants to be if it’s a Parent dictating his college career. Curbelo might have the ball in his hands quite a bit, but Underwood‘s offense requires several ball handlers and can highlight the skill sets of each player. If anything Curbelo enhances Miller. We did get a taste of Miller’s offense without Ayo. He was much more aggressive with the ball. I wish him the best. It’s a tough spot for him If true.

I thought he was one of the few options that seemed to work against Loyola. I yelled at the screen he got taken off the court near the end, and can't help wonder if that was a final straw for him (or his advisors).
Same here. Every time he took a mid-range shot he got snatched. AC throughout the year would deliberately ignore him. I have no problem with AC trying to get the ball to Kofi and GB but, he refused to bring anyone else, not named Ayo, into play. Miller was begging for the ball against Loyola and was completely ignored. I think that BU only wanted him to shoot perimeter threes. The first half of the game after Ayo's injury, Miller carried the team. AC proceeded to completely ignore him in the first five minutes of the 2nd half. It took TF to start directing passes towards Miller. I am glad that he is doing what is best for his interests. He sacrificed all season for the team. Those of you that have a limited understanding of high-level bb may not appreciate it but, quite a few others know he made a huge sacrifice for this team. BU said at halftime of the Drexel game that he didn't want any more mid-range shots. He kept snatching Miller to prove his point. That was the only shot the Illini had against Loyola without making adjustments. Those that consider it an inefficient shot (while correct from a scoring standpoint) need to watch how often Gonzaga uses it. Aaron Jordan's dad once criticized the self-importance and lack of basketball knowledge on this board. Sadly, he was correct.

My old coach from back in the day used to say..."...yea, He's a good player but not coachable."

I will also never understand a kid ranked around #30 in his recruiting class expecting to be one and done. There are exactly 30 first round picks every year. You're competing against every player in your class, as well as players from the last 3 classes who haven't made it yet, plus overseas players, for one of those spots (unless you're ok being a one and done 2nd round draft pick, but that's typically not what these guys are thinking). Basic math says a guy ranked 20-30 in his class is unlikely to be a one and done. Does it happen? Is it something to aspire to? Sure. Should you bank on it? Definitely not. I'm sure Ayo had dreams of being one and done, or even two and done, but he read the room, adjusted his expectations, and it looks like he's going to be rewarded for it.

I think if you read BU's quotes from the News Gazette article he was giving us a heads up that someone was going to be entering the portal. Not going to quote the article exactly but his statements about having the right guys in the locker room seems to be saying someone just wasn't the right fit.

Whoever truly made the decision, whatever. I am interested in seeing where he ends up. Transfer recruiting, especially this year, is going to be very similar to traditional recruiting. Lots of promises are going to be made. I have a hard time seeing a good P6 team handing over the keys to Miller as a PG to run the show. I think (maybe worry?) that he's going to believe someone's promise and end up in the same role he just left. There's a very good chance he goes to a worse situation than the one he left at Illinois, and I really hope that he's smart about that choice. To me, he's going to have to take a relative step down to get to a team that will actually let him run the show. That can still be at the P6 level, but it won't be at the more established level. Like a B1G equivalent of Penn State, Nebraska, Northwestern. I could see him jumping in with a new coach. The coaching changes this year have been brutal for those rosters. Those coaches will try to grab any impact guy by promising anything necessary.

This might be a reach. It seems the staff & players weren't expecting this.

AM Too small.....besides Curbelo is our future....fun to watch and gives 100%, don't see him pouting on the bench.
You obviously never watched AC in fast break situations, when he didn't have the ball. Rather than filling a lane, he would sometimes let Ayo blow past him and almost walk down the court.

As I’ve said before, I teach high school...that doesn’t give me any insight into Adam in particular, but there are possible reasons that do manifest themselves with students who feel they should be in the spotlight:

This is an era of unprecedented exposure, and Oscar Wilde was never more accurate than when he said “there is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.”

In this era of unprecedented exposure, Curbelo is the one who is being talked about.

Non caffeinated thoughts: I feel really bad for AM if he's actually having to be a buffer between his parents and the coaches. I still have hopes that behind the scenes, BU and Chin can find a way to make this right for Adam and his family.

If not, one of the silver linings will be that we can still have Miller Time.
