Barry Lunney Named Illinois Offensive Coordinator and QBs Coach

Does Barker come back? That’s a big question now with a TE-heavy offense.
I really hope so. He was not used nearly enough last season.

Give us all of the 2 and 3 TE sets we can handle.

Exciting news! Definitely different from past hires in the divisiveness.

I do not think it will factor into his decision much, if you look at the graphic that mhuml32 put up, it shows there were only 43 targets in the 14 games they played for TE's

With all of the talk this week about TP being let go and Lunney being the probable new OC I was just waiting for the nut punch to happen. Announce TP firing, Lunney not being the new OC and we getting someone worse than TP. I mean this is Illinois football this is what I have been conditioned to believe.

Then I see the announcement and the only thing I can do is...

What (if any) effect will this hire have on the offense position coaches ?
Very good question. I assume none, but that may not be a viable assumption.

I can’t imagine McDonald is going anywhere, I can’t really imagine Bart Miller is going anywhere. So long as we need IW (and we do) CPatt isn’t going anywhere.

We’ll see. Keeping the staff would add to my confidence about the fit, though others might fairly observe that we would then not be allowing Lunney to have the effect he was ostensibly hired for. Reasonable people can disagree.

I’d like to just kinda pretend this was the staff all along.

Btw I had a fake lightbulb moment and thought I remembered Samari Collier had a UTSA offer, but he didn't.

Because the other big question is what this means for our QB situation. If Lunney isn't as enamored with DeVito and especially Leary as Petersen was, we've got some work to do.

Love the hire and momentum! Two questions:

1. Do we have the players (mainly qb) to allow the coach to see a jump in O improvement?

2. Does it realistically make IL any more attractive in the transfer market to try and close the gap for next year?

It seems 0440 mentioned a possible transfer QB (not tommy d) who looked decent on film. But seems like we just need the right transfer at that position especially to make a big leap next year. And I would imagine 2-3 quality o-line transfers would be a target for the staff as well.

Basically, it’s time to start recruiting like crazy. But things seem to be headed in the right direction!
To answer your two questions, possibly yes for the first but a resounding yes for the second. We need to do more for the OL and another QB would make the spring practices more competitive.

I would believe that this question was talked about in the negotiations. Can Lunney work well with the current offensive coaches? I bet BB and his staff talked about what they are looking for and Lunney was it.

Can we expect to get 3 years from Lunney before he takes the leap to HC? What is the usual progression when you stay in the same role but move up to a P5 school?

Lunney has interviewed for a HC position already. I look at this move to check another box on his resume. If Illinois doesn't have a strong offense under his leadership, it could hurt him. UTSA had the players that made the offense so potent, does Illinois have the players that can duplicate his success at UTSA?

That is the million dollar question

I wonder if BB wanted Lunney last year, but it didn't happen for whatever reason? I always felt like Petersen was a warm-body hire, but that may just be my bias.
This looks on paper to be an upgrade in every category. But I'm just so impressed by how fast BB acted. Amazon has a Core Value of "Fast Fast". I love that phrase - and it applies here. BB has to own the poor hire - its not like he inherited TP and tried him out... he hired him. But with last year's mess on offense, I'm REALLY impressed that he saw enough to eat the rest of TPs contract and hit reset ASAP.
