Baylor 95, Illinois 91 (Exhibition) Postgame

Like what freshmen gave us, Jackys solid as well. Vaaks defense just not there, not great foot speed. Andrej shot selection should be better once Mirk returns sermed to force some.

Twins need to play like upper classmen. More assertive and effective, missed shots and rebounds. Poor showing by both.

Exhibition thoughts…

1) glad we want to pick up the pace, but after two games, I think we need a tad more middle ground - this is too fast. I’ll chalk it up to rotations mostly, but I’m getting some Alabama PTSD from last year where we lose our minds a bit.

2) monitoring the rebounding results.

3) I like Ethan Brown. Loved how he played against Cincy. But to me, even if he defends a little more than Vaaks, the gap offensively seems notable

4) defense was there in second half. To a degree, I think Baylor’s shooting made the first half seem a lot worse than it was - but hey, they made them.

I remember seeing on this board that if Jakstys ever got tick we would be in trouble. Dude looked damn good against good competition. I don’t see why he can’t be an option 🤷🏻‍♂️

Didn’t watch, just observing here. I think coach knows what he has in the older guys. They are trying to tune a few things with them while seeing what we have in the new guys. Also, let’s look at last year at this time. Petro had way more tick than Keaton and we said we were 12 deep to really only see 8?

Same.

And I don't think he defended any better than Vaaks tonight. Frankly he was getting blown by over and over and big reason why Brad pulled him in 1st half and iced him IMO. Vaaks size and ability to get to the hoop (big IF....he doesn't settle for contested jumpers) is just so noticeable out there. Vaaks will never be good defensively....but he's got the size and strength that Brown simply doesn't have right now.

The thing that maybe goes unheralded with Q is for the most part is his confidence and decision making at this stage. His stats are great and he plays so hard. His effort is great, his decision making is good and it is only going to get better. That's crazy exciting.

Agree, and Vaaks has to rebound. One area he absolutely can & must improve.

The point of these games, to me, is that to find out what guys like Ethan Brown, Lincoln Williams, and to a much lesser extent, Quentin Coleman look like against “live bullets.”

He’ll never say this publicly, but Brad isn’t concerned about winning these games. It’s about experimenting with lineups and seeing what works and what doesn’t.

It’s October 23. We could have beaten the freaking Knicks tonight I wouldn’t have cared.
