If JW has his coach who would hire after the 2016 season why not do it now. Give the new coach time to get to know the recruits and get the players he'll need for his system. Makes sense to me to do it now.

I'm just not too optimistic at this point. :tsk: But hey I will still renew my tickets for the 2016 and pray for the best... :chief: Go Illini

Sure it would have been nice to tell the players before the news broke, but man of all the terrible things that have happened to the players (abuse) and program, that does not register as one of them. This decision was made for the players and program, plain and simple. You cannot tell everyone first and this can easily be explained to players as something that the university needed to release prior to a team meeting. It was a bold move, and IMO a good one. Thank you JW.

Am I wrong in thinking that JW's first official day was supposed to be March 21st? When did that get moved up to today.

Guess I missed that.

I'd be absolutely thrilled with either Leslie Frazier or Lovie Smith. Smith moreso than Leslie. If those rumors have any legs to them, then today is a great day.

If he knew that he was going to let Cubit go, this is the perfect time. Spring practice has been postponed until a new coach is named so, he definitely has to have someone in mind. The team gets to go through spring practice learning whatever system is put in place and the summer to work on the new things.

I'm a little disappointed in this board's hustle. Not one person has analyzed every flight going in and out of Willard for the past 96 hours. I'm ashamed.

I would be shocked, astounded, and gobsmacked if Lovie Smith were a candidate for this or any other NCAA job. If he had never coached the Bears his name would never be mentioned here.

To paraphrase: "If he didn't have a super bowl appearance on his resume he would be a less attractive candidate." Very strong take.

BOT had a special session to get him on board sooner.

If Urban Meyer had never coached in the NCAA and won multiple national championships, he would be a no name. Great thinking

To any of you film makers out there, I hope you have been documenting, this could make for a heck of a 30 for 30 in 20 years.

What has Lovie done since his SB appearance? One playoff appearance, no evidence of getting a look from any NCAA program when he was out of coaching, and now presiding over mediocrity in the NFC South.

Again, I don't think his name wouldn't be coming up on an Illinois coaching search thread if he had the same NFL resume with any other team. He's not a college coach, has never been a college coach, and no evidence suggests any colleges ever wanted him to coach.

And to whomever brought up Meyer--Meyer is a proven college FB coach with the titles to show for it. Apples and oldsmobiles.

Press Conference Today?

Guys,

I'm a little confused. Is there a presser today at 3pm CST? Are we expecting an explanation of what we already know or surprise?

Thanks

Everyone focuses on Whitman's Illini pedigree, but they tend to overlook that he bounced around the NFL for four years. I think that opens your eyes to the mickey-mouse nature of a lot of college coaching and probably turns you off from much of the rah-rah garbage. And BTW, the timing here is not so crazy if he's tapping someone from the pro ranks. It would make more sense to pull the trigger now than lose another ten months, wait until December, and then target the same guy who by then will be in NFL week 13 or 14 and his situation may have changed.

In a strange turn of events, Josh Whittman announces Josh Whittman will be the next head football coach at the University of Illinois.

Honestly though, I heard much earlier today it will be Frazier.

What I don't like about this whole ordeal is well... everything! The timing of this fire will give us 3 coaches in less than a year. I wish we could've done this months ago but nobody with a backbone could make a decisive decision. If I am a recruit, why would I want to commit to this mess? In a state with no budget, fires head coaches at will, it would be one thing if we were actually good but we are not... Whoever comes in better be worth it.

So the other option to having 3 coaches in less than a year is to live with the current state of affairs? Who cares how many coaches we have had if we can find someone that gets this ship heading in the right direction. If I am a recruit,
I am excited about the commitment to excellence and want to be a part of that. Doesn't matter how many coaches we had in the past if we get the right one now. Of course, this remains to be seen but you have to take risks if you want to achieve greatness.

Lovie Smith was fired by the Glazers in Tampa. Many people agreed it was too soon because the Bucs were rebuilding, which is correct because they finally think they found their franchise QB in Winston. However, since the Glazers are morons, they fired him. The mediocre argument is also shallow, because it is a proven fact that mediocre NFL coaches are also mediocre college coaches! Just look at Pete Carroll, who also used to be a mediocre NFL coach. inb4 anyone mentions the fact that USC is an easy place to win, keep in mind USC was a mediocre program before Carroll revitalized it. Chip Kelly probably won't succeed at San Fran and his next job will be in college. Jim Harbaugh couldn't succeed at San Fran long-term either (or maybe the Yorks are just that dumb). Point is, failed NFL coaches have succeeded at the college level. Of course, Kelly and Harbaugh already had proven track records in college before entering the NFL, but Doug Marrone wasn't spectacular at Syracuse, and he did a decent job in Buffalo considering the team's best QB was Kyle freaking Orton.

He's been sitting back for years without a voice not liking what's going on. Now he can do something about it and has. My only problem with Fraziier is he has zero connections in the high school world so hopefully he's ready to work.

The last thing this program needs is NFL coach with little or no college head coaching experience. Smith has done nothing since 2005 and Frazier hasn't coached in college in 18 years. Frazier had 1 winning season as Vikings HC. We need a young energetic head coach Fleck, Brohm, Monken etc. Babers would have been great.
