Think Cubit will keep Banks?
He kind of has to now. What caliber of replacement is going to want to be coordinator for a coach on a two-year deal widely expected to be fired by the next AD after the 2016 season? This is a good illustration why so many of us are not just shrugging our shoulders and saying, "Oh, well. It's the best choice under the circumstances."

No, he really doesn't. With two defensive coordinators, he has the luxury of picking one if that is what he wants to do.

If Mike Phair stays. Any ideas for offensive coordinator? We're 85th in total offense prior to this game and have 108 yards against Northwestern as of this writing.

Just let master OC Bill Cubit call the plays! he's an offensive genius, haven't you heard?

I don't know how anyone who was anti Beckman can be pro Cubit? It just doesn't compute to me.... How are they different??

Some of you guys need to take a step back and calm down. In a year with so many coaching vacancies, we are not near the top of the pecking order. Could we have gotten a better coach than HCBC? Possibly, probably even. But what would it say about the job stability/security at Illinois if we fired BC after a 6-6 year (I would've waited until after this game and fired him if he lost) in his first season? There has been so much turnover recently in the program, and I am OKAY (not happy) with this decision to have some stability.

The University knows he is not the long term solution, and the deal reflects that. But it buys us time: time to find a high quality AD, and not rush into somebody that is less than ideal. Not only that, but the team will not be a disaster next year, and I could easily see 7-5. Some of you are acting like that isn't acceptable at Illinois: unfortunately, we are not fans of Bama. If we want to have a really good season, it'll happen on the heels of building some consistency and achieving 6 to 8 wins regularly.

Right now, we have a great guy who cares about the University and has done a fantastic job with the off the field stuff. We could be doing worse (e.g. Beckman). Again, I am NOT happy about this hire. Just okay with it. But I am quite perturbed by the reaction of most on this board.

I know I'm going to be quoted and accused of supporting mediocrity. I don't. I do not like this BCHC situation. But I think this was probably the right decision without an AD, unless you had a hire in hand. In the best of worlds, I would want Jeff Brohm announced as our coach on Sunday. But this isn't catastrophic.

Finally: If you all stop cheering for the Illini because of this hire, you are ridiculous. Support your team through thick and thin. Stop acting like fifth graders. We aren't bandwagoners here, we bleed orange and blue.

Folks, we can't hire a football coach without an AD. We can't hire an AD without a Chancellor. It's really that simple. Obviously, there has been a lot of turmoil and turnover the last 6-7 years at the upper levels of the administration, and there is very little margin for error with all of these future hires.

If there is ever a time to be patient, it is now. There is no need to rush. Absolutely none. If we do not do our due diligence, and once again have to hit the reset button, we are looking at another 5-10+ years of more athletics misery and falling academic rankings. Stability and strong leadership will get us out of this hole, nothing else. The endgame here is long-term success at the cost of short-term success.

Now, the real question is whether the right hires will be made or not. It is understandable why some may be less-than-optimistic that the University will, but the decision to retain Cubit was absolutely the right one.

AD Paul Kowalczyk on 2-year deal: "It's not ideal but for now, I don't think it'll put a dagger in the heart of the program."

translation: "hey, this wasn't my idea."

Best parts of the interview:

Interim AD: As you know, Univ. of Illinois is about processes

Q: Was it your call, or someone else's call, how did you guys decide?
Interim AD: That's kind of the key word, there were a lot of calls

Interim AD: The kids are clearly behind Bill and supportive of that decision, that was the overriding factor
Q: Did you talk with players at all?
Interim AD: No, I have not spoken to the players

This is the type of decision that bodes well with the elderly lady Illini fan..." I know we got beat by 40 points, but the boys fought hard.". Welcome to the Vanilla Jungle...

I am not talking just you. But many people on here telling people they need to quit saying they are not following, or not contributing any more. Well everyone has a different tipping point. They may have been watching for 35 years and have reached their limit. I am close to that. (But I did still watch the first half today)

Anyway, I don't really agree that people should just shut up and leave if they are done. I do realize it is an Illini board, and should support the teams. But I also understand that you can only take bad leadership so many times before you give up.
