This is disappointing mostly because we should have just extended him with a 4 year contract even if it is a faux four year contract. The most incorrect decision (in my opinion) was made worse with the 2 year deal. BUT, we will see how it goes.
My thought right now is that I, too, will not buy any more tickets to the football games. However, that is not because I don't love the university or want it to succeed, but because (at this moment) I have lost faith in the Athletic Department.
Now, this may be an awesome/financially wise decision...and maybe Rick George has said he would make the move in a year but not this year. So, they decide to wait, get their Chancellor, let him hire Rick George to a more stable institution, and then watch as Cubit struggles to get us 6 wins, fire him w/a low buyout, and begin the process to hire the next awesome coach that emerges next year. (And there will be several...maybe even a few that don't jump this year)
IF, and it's a big IF, that is their long term plan...and we see it come to fruition, it will restore my faith and I will begin to contribute again.
It is each fan's prerogative to donate/support based on their own views. Some donate/support no matter what and feel the fans are what builds/brings up the program and help it get better. Others feel there has to be a dedicated and visible effort to improve athletics from the school before they can latch on. That is the camp I'm in. I feel the school should build a winning program and the fans will come out and support more.
Anyway, this is my $.02. I know several people are being dramatic but I don't think we should lambast each other here. It is each person's right to support this team how they will, let's all remember that and Go Illini!

Keeping Cubit does not guarantee any of the decent assistants are going to wait around while this "Experiment" plays out. Why not make the AD permanent and let him hire the BEST candidate available. What will the admin. do if 1/3 of the assistants walk? HMMMM you talk about some turmoil, they better put a revolving door on the entrance to the coaches office because I believe it's going to get some heavy use in the next 6 mos.

I would feel better if this was the start of a bigger plan to get our house in order and cubit was here just to keep the seat warm. Its hard to know what is coming next.
Some of you guys need to take a step back and calm down. In a year with so many coaching vacancies, we are not near the top of the pecking order. Could we have gotten a better coach than HCBC? Possibly, probably even. But what would it say about the job stability/security at Illinois if we fired BC after a 6-6 year (I would've waited until after this game and fired him if he lost) in his first season? There has been so much turnover recently in the program, and I am OKAY (not happy) with this decision to have some stability.
The University knows he is not the long term solution, and the deal reflects that. But it buys us time: time to find a high quality AD, and not rush into somebody that is less than ideal. Not only that, but the team will not be a disaster next year, and I could easily see 7-5. Some of you are acting like that isn't acceptable at Illinois: unfortunately, we are not fans of Bama. If we want to have a really good season, it'll happen on the heels of building some consistency and achieving 6 to 8 wins regularly.

I have never disagreed with a decision involving a school or team I root for as much as this. This seemed like a no-brainer. I don't see any reason for this. I won't say I am not going to follow the team any more. Because knowing myself I probably will. But they are so far down on my priority list now. I am glad I saw this before the game today. Now I don't have to watch.
It feels strange that I am this strongly against this. Because I don't dislike Cubit. But he is not a Big10 head coach. This move will only dig an even deeper hole for the program ( Hard to do).

Why didn't they at least interview Baber, Campbell or Fleck, maybe one of them would have taken the job even without an AD. They didn't even try.
This is something that people say every year. Every year there are a lot of firings and hirings. Success doesn't belong to the weak. An interim administration making an interim decision leads to further mediocrity and interim dissension.

Since they saved money on the head coaches contract, maybe they can give the assts they want to keep a 2 year extension. Most only get 1-2 years anyway.
This decision is not a long term decision, unless you want to blow it up and start all over in two years
I agree it might be difficult to hire a coach without an AD, but you have to at least try. Illnois, at least on the surface, did not try.
To complicate matters, the two year deal is also a probable killer. It will hurt recruiting and possibly the coaching staff. Recruits will want to know who their coach is in four/five years. Assistant coaches will be similar, so I think you will see many leave for stability.
Go through the search process, keeping Cubit as a candidate. If no candidate is willing to come here, then hire Cubit. But it MUST be a four year deal. Make it creative, like an NFL contract, guarantee one or two years upfront, then a low buyout.

I think the point being made in the frustration, if we HAD to keep Cubit, is that the program let us get into a situation where we have no AD and now we're forced into the same old cr*p for two more years - while recruits decide to go elsewhere - and so 2 years turns into 6+. I am still not buying that we can't get a coach without a firm AD in place. Regardless, unless there is some 'wow' (to the good side) information unbeknownst to us, this has all the makings of a vast lack of leadership and plan.
Since most of us do not have the ear of the leadership, many may feel withholding dollars and attendance is the best way to get voices heard. You don't reward your kids for doing the wrong thing, why should you reward adults?
You are exactly correct. Cubit won't make big money and a new AD will be able to move on if he chooses after next season. In fact, signing a new coach for four or five years could be a deterrent to hiring the next AD.

the real question is why is the university dragging its feet on making any administrative hires to date? maybe if they had filled those positions it wouldn't have come to this.

I know I'm in the minority, but I don't see this as a horrible decision. I think we all can agree that Cubit isn't the long term answer, but the players love him and he will provide stability while we get our ducks in a row. A year from now we will have a chancellor and AD in place and be in a better position to conduct a proper coaching search. Another thing to consider is the large amount of head coaching jobs available this year. There are already a bevy of more desirable openings than coaching Illinois and the season isn't even over yet. That's before you factor in all the uncertainty surrounding the university. Let's just all take a step back from the ledge and see how next year plays out. Pulling our donations and support will only deepen existing issues, and we'll all be sitting around next year complaining about Illinois's inability to make a splashy hire.
