When all else fails, punt...

Worst run state government
Worst run university
Worst run athletic department

Ok, now that I've had time to digest it really isn't a bad situation. Now, we have time for a new AD to get put in place and let them work with the powers that be and boosters and figure out the football situation. Maybe Cubit can salvage recruiting and hold things together for another year. I highly doubt he's here two years unless he wins 7-8 games next year and if he does that, extend him.

As of right now how good do you feel they will not wiff on the AD hire? I'm not to sure right now. They might take the interim off of the current AD and give him a two year low budget contract until they make the "right" hires at the top. By the way can my kids get interim scholarships too. I mean As long as they want to hand out money.

I'm trying really hard not to think this scenario will occur, but if I was a betting man. . .

Still trying to figure out any rationale for supporting this hire. Also, realize that the deal structure will absolutely destroy recruiting. For players, but also, perhaps more importantly, for staff. What good and/or proven staffers are going to come to a program with what equates to a hard deadline.

Are you really prepared for Ryan Cubit to make the leap to full time B1G Offensive Coordinator?

Neither recruiting nor hiring will be any worse than it has been for the last several years.

I could be if he's more creative than his dad. Nothing made me pull my hair out more than running the off set power right on back to back plays in the second half.

I get the extension for a "hire everyone else" mindset, but I, like everyone else, am not understanding a 2 year deal vs. 4 years.

I'm in my mid-twenties but I think I'll be in my thirties before were are decent again.

My (maybe our) only hope is that Bill out performs all expectations?

And your a fan?

And your cool with that?

That's the problem. We suck, our current coach sucks and we don't try to get better by getting a better coach.

So yeah our recruiting will not get any better until we get a better coach ... That is true .

Can anyone explain the rationale of firing Thomas, admittedly for no wrong doing, but wanting a clean slate. And then turn around and hire the OC from that same scandal plagued staff? ??

Because it's the worst thing to do. Oh, then extend that status by 2 years so you can really drive recruiting into the ground. What an attractive situation for the new AD! :tsk:

+10000000000 on both fronts. Recruits aren't stupid. They know BC is basically an extended interim HC. Recruiting will not improve over the next two years largely because of this. UI needed to either let BC go and hire a new replacement with no ties to TB or (shudder) give BC a longer-term contract as a show of confidence and to help recruits know there's stability at the top of the program. Choosing a middle-of-the-road response was even worse than giving BC a long-term contract. Standing in the middle of the road, trying to appease both sides of the road, gets you run over.

I'm in my early 40's and still waiting. I never, ever, ever thought it would be this tough to build a solid program at Illinois.

Northwestern has done it - and even Duke is decent. This is painful.

If the perception is that the University doesn't care, then why should the fans? Winning teams draw fans, not hope. The same tenor from last year that Beckman was not the right guy to lead this team in the future turned out to be very true. The feeling is the same about Cubit - so why draw this out?

+1. Illinois' admin sent a clear message today that it won't much effort into building a winning FB program, that that isn't a priority to them. We're about to see more of the same over the next 2 years.

There's no excuse for UI not to be better than this at FB, especially when NW and Duke have better programs now, and NW has been better for awhile. Attendance at home games next year is about to plummet even further.

@dan_bernstein: Source: active, vocal faction of #Illini boosters "really pissed" about Cubit deal, threatening to pull support.

My cousin is a generous DIA booster. He is seriously thinking of reducing or temporarily suspending his support to athletics because of this. He's a smart investor who doesn't like squandering his hard-earned money on losing propositions.

There's 0 rationale for this, still. Hell we could have done this a week from now. To do this before the season was over is just sickening.

AD Paul Kowalczyk on 2-year deal: "It's not ideal but for now, I don't think it'll put a dagger in the heart of the program."

If that praise for Cubit doesn't fire up the players, donors and fan base about the next 2 years of Illini FB, I don't know what will ;).

Thankfully we are an irrelevant program. All ESPN has talked about is how badly LSU handled everything this week.

As many have posted here, the battle plan is obvious: Let's hire a new AD and let him make the coaching decision. This plan works if we hire a top notch AD (we'll see). If you look at next year's schedule if we win 6 plus games, Cubit will have done a hell of a job. More likely our record will be worse than this year therefore justifying the new AD to clean house. So starting in 2017 we'll have a great AD and a great new HC (if all goes to plan). The alternative was Kowalczyk hiring a coach this year and giving him a 5 year deal. If he hired the right guy, we advance the rebuild by a year. If he got it wrong, we delay the rebuild for up to 4 years. As painful as it is, this battle plan makes sense IF you go all out and secure that great AD. I would submit that this time of year is probably not the best time of year to be in the AD hiring market, a further handicap to getting things done now.

Confidence in getting the a.d. hire right should be about 0 at this point. Just assume the worst until proven otherwise. I swear if someone was trying to intentionally destroy this program they couldn't do a better job than the current administration is doing.

No kidding. This should really help sell tickets. Maybe they can put John Cleese on next year's schedule poster. "Illinois Football 2016 - We're Not Quite Dead Yet"

The problem is that we have had time. We shouldn't need to be buying it. Thomas should've been fired way before he was and we all saw it. AD should already be in place

I'm interested to see if he makes any coaching changes. I don't know if there are upgrades willing to come here but this staff really needs to coach these kids up especially when you're getting average recruits.
