Bowl Games & CFB Playoff

#1
Here are the College Football Playoff match-ups:

-Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl: #1 Georgia vs. #4 Ohio State
-Vrbo Fiesta Bowl: #2 Michigan vs. #3 TCU

Alabama is at #5 and Tennessee is at #6.

With Ohio State and Michigan in the CFP Playoff, I'd think it's Penn State vs. Utah in the Rose Bowl.

#2
Here are the remaining New Year's Six Bowl games:

-Capital One Orange Bowl: #6 Tennessee vs. #7 Clemson
-Allstate Sugar Bowl: #5 Alabama vs. #9 Kansas State
-Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic: #16 Tulane vs. #10 USC
-Rose Bowl Game: #8 Utah vs. 11 Penn State

I'm in the minority that wanted a rematch of UM-OSU. Assume UM will smoke TCU (in the second half, of course).

#4 Utah

#5 TCU vs #12 Tulane
#6 Ohio State vs. #11 Penn State

Just counting this up.....gonna take 4 weeks to resolve a 12 team playoff. So, they get one bye week after the conf. championships, otherwise they alter the schedule.

What purpose does the conference championship serve with a 12 team playoff, especially if conferences do away with divisions as rumoured? Seems like they would need that week for either a rest week somewhere between the end of season and final game or just use that week to recuse how long the playoffs extend the season. They make money now, but assume that would be replace with more $ from the playoffs.

Conference champions get a bye, and I think a home game.

pretty sure the home games are only for the higher rated seeds in round one .
rounds 2 & 3 & finals are all going to be indoors or in warm weather arenas

That is correct. The four highest ranked conference champions get byes into the quarterfinal round, which is held at a bowl game.

What is strange to me is the first round home games. It feels like that could be a gold mine of revenue for the home team. For example, if the new CFP format took place now, Alabama and Tennessee both would host a playoff game, despite not winning conference championship.

Are these schools mandated to share revenue associated to those games? If not, then from a financial perspective, it could be argued that there is more of an incentive to finish ranked 5-8.

Seems like they could give the "championship" for bye purposes based on record, head-to-head, points, etc, even with multiple divisions. The biggest argument against would be disparity in divisional schedules. It would all be moot if divisions are eliminated, at which point it is more like the English Premier League.

Since this whole thing is designed by and run by the conferences themselves, it's no surprise it's got a heavy tilt towards conference championships. Not all conferences are created equal, obviously, and to run a 12 team bracket you need 4 teams getting a bye in round one, so the agreed to put the four highest conference champs in those slots.

While that will satisfy the "you won your conference, that should mean something crowd", that has ripple effects with seeds 5-12, and potentially creates some odd bracket match ups.

First round games will be played on campus, on or around like Dec 20th.
Quarter final and semi final games will utilize the current "New Years 6" bowls. Not sure we know the dates or timing on that yet.
Final game will be around Jan 20th.

Assuming Hooker was healthy, I’d say the most likely first round upset would be Tulane over TCU. Tulane beat K State on the road; the same K State team TCU just lost to at a neutral site.

After that, you’d almost be sure to end up with 3 SEC teams in the final four with this bracket. I’d have to guess that if the committee were seeding for 12 teams this year, they’d adjust things so that all 3 Big 10 teams aren’t in the same “region,” probably by flipping TCU’s and OSU’s ranking.

I think you're mis-interpreting the second round matchups (or I am...). 6/11 winner would play 3 so all the B1G teams aren't in the same "region." Similarly, 8/9 winner would play 1 so 3 SEC teams can't make the final four of this bracket.

You do bring up an interesting point, though, about if the committee will tweak rankings to avoid an "unbalanced" bracket. Another interesting scenario would be if TCU/KSU were ranked 6/11 for example. So KSU's "reward" for beating TCU in the B12 championship game would be to play them again on the road... There would have to be some sort of "protection" against that, no?

No. You’re right and I’m wrong. I had the quarter finals seeds flipped in my head.

I wanted a rematch and a guarantee of a B1G team in the finals
TCU could win that game. I think O. State and Georgia will be closer than people think. Sorry to say, I do have SCUM wriggling in. Of course, I have them losing in the finals soooo, thats a good thing :)

Not a great place to pose this question, but since it is bowl related I’ll put it here. Anyone know of a website where you can find list of what players are opting out of their bowls?

Found one if anyone interested. Hopefully it helps me with the Bowl Mania confidence pool I’m in with some friends. Need something to try and separate 42 games.

This is a great list. Also it reminded me that Arkansas had a guy on the roster named Bumper Pool.

Quite a first bowl game. Wasn’t the best played game, but an exciting game and finish. Thankfully UAB won as I had 39 points on them in my confidence pool.

UAB beats Miami Ohio , coached by Chuck Martin, the one time OC at ND before that gig. He was often mentioned by people for our job . Glad we didnt waste our time with him .

He may be a decent coach, by his record at DII Grand Valley St, but you wouldnt know it by his record at Miami. Admittedly, not an easy place to win these days.
