ND wants NOTHING to do with playing us in a bowl game this year
And they will be without some key players in whatever bowl they play. I’d love to play them. How much say do schools have in accepting invitations? Are they allowed to wait and see who they would play?

it’s all negotiated from both perspectives . ND does not want an invitation that they don’t can’t accept , and it’s all done in “smoke filled “ rooms . league commissioners do it for conference schools , and ND does it for themselves .

there is basically zero chance they play us or any B1G school in a bowl game .

this process is nothing like March Madness bracket pairings where schools have no input

We possibly/likely will have some key players sitting out a bowl game because that’s just how it is today. McCray can still play 1 more game and keep his redshirt correct? I know Coach B has said he won’t be here that long anyway. Another month would be a lot of recovery time, but getting healthy has certainly been a struggle for Josh. If we are without chase it would sure be nice to have him at full strength.
players who sit out bowl games have typically been ones that are likely 1st or 2nd round picks and have nothing to prove to anyone .

I’m not saying we won’t have a player or two opt out , but i don’t think we have any of the type of players who are a top 45 pick in this upcoming draft .

When do we find out officially which Bowl we get? Will there be a Bowl special announcing all of them? I'm rooting for Citrus or ReliaQuest!

I could see spoon opting out, but any one else would be leaving $$$ on the table.

I’ve always viewed opting out of bowl games as injury prevention and making sure you don’t have an injury that hurts your draft stock. I’m not sure how much draft status improves based on bowl games.

It will be interesting to see who plays and who doesn’t.

Generally not much, scouts have enough film on you already. Playing in the bowl is basically for guys who will be playing CFB next year. Bowl game can help you solidify your spot for next year or attach a little respect to their name to transfer

I think we are firmly slotted in Reliaquest Bowl regardless of next week's outcome.

I think there will be three B1G teams in NY6 no matter what. If Michigan wins, then you will have Mich in playoff, OSU in Rose or playoff, and Penn St. as at large (likely Orange).

If Purdue wins, then it might make Penn St. odd man out, since Purdue would go to Rose. That would slide Penn St. to Citrus Bowl. Can't see four teams getting in NY6 bowls.

No way Purdue gets passed by us. They will have better conference record, and there is no indication that we would travel much better than them to warrant us getting selected first.

Honestly, we are better off with Purdue in Citrus Bowl. Let them get stomped by a better SEC team.
Either way, this Illini team deserves a nice bowl, even with that rough 3 week stretch.

The Iowa loss on Friday was huge for us!
1. After any B1G teams that make the College Football Playoff, The Rose Bowl is obligated to take the next highest ranked B1G team. If both Michigan and OSU were in the CFP, even with a Purdue win in the B1G Championship game, I believe that Penn St. would be the Rose Bowl representative for B1G (currently at #11 and moving up due to losses ahead of them this week). Otherwise, I think it's more likely to be Michigan in CFP, OSU to the Rose Bowl, and Penn St. to the Orange Bowl (at-large) and then Purdue/Illini or Illini/Purdue for the next slots.
2. It's possible, but not likely, that we could pass Purdue if they get stomped in the B1G Championship game. Granted, they beat us in Champaign, in a game in which we were a TD favorite. In conference games this year the Illini had a +74 point differential. Purdue was +11. If Purdue gets spanked by the Michigan team we lost to by 2 points (and shouldn't have) in Ann Arbor, then I think it's a toss-up between Illini/Purdue. I'm certain that if the Illini and Purdue played tomorrow, on a neutral site, that the Illini would be a field goal favorite.
3. I agree that I'd rather see Purdue get stomped in their bowl game and the Illini getting a lesser bowl game opponent, especially if both are playing on January 2nd (Citrus Bowl - Orlando and ReliaQuest Bowl - Tampa Bay).

I think it’s going to be Michigan in the CFP, Ohio State in the Rose, Penn State in the Orange, Purdue in the Citrus, us in the ReliaQuest and Iowa or Minnesota in the Music City. The team that isn’t chosen for the Music City will get the Duke’s Mayo.

If Ohio State is ranked 5th, they will still have a pretty good chance of going. I do not believe Georgia or Michigan will lose but TCU or USC could. Still much to be determined.

I think we are probably locked into the Outback bowl. If Purdue beats Scum then Penn State losses to LSU in the Citrus. If Scum beats Purdue, then Purdue is dog walked by LSU in the Citrus.

I think Illinois travels much better than Boilers. Bigger fan base coast to coast.

I think Witherspoon is going to wind up going late 1st round. And if not there, then very early 2nd round. He's a shutdown corner and the top rated one by pff- I just can't see him dropping as far as even mid 2nd round unless he completely bombs the interviews or gets injured. Consensus shutdown corners just don't tend to fall that far as the teams that need one really need one, and the teams that have one will always want a 2nd one.

Any idea what Spoon's measurables are? 40, vertical?

Post-game interview yesterday was very impressive.

If USC loses, no matter what happens in the other games, it's going to be Georgia, Michigan, TCU, OSU. 100% guaranteed. If USC wins, things could get weird if any of the other teams outside of probably Georgia lose. My guess would be that if TCU were to lose, they'd wind up being left out, which quite frankly is infuriating as they'd deserve a spot over a 1 loss OSU, Michigan, and USC team based on resume. If all favorites win, it'll be Georgia, Michigan, TCU, USC 100% guaranteed. That said, in a typical year, at least 1 team is going to get upset in their championship game. I'm hoping it's Michigan. Hate those clowns.

Coaches Poll is out for this week. In "Others Receiving Votes" Purdue is at #31 (36 votes) and Illini are #36 (10 votes). A stomp-down by Michigan in the B1G Championship could move Illinois past Purdue in that list.

If Purdue wins next week, they are a 100% lock for the Rose Bowl. They would be the B1G Champions and the guaranteed spot for the B1G (Rose Bowl). Stangely, Michigan and OSU would be at large teams in the CFP from the same conference, which would be unprecedented. My guess would be only Mich would be in CFP and OSU would be the at large team in Orange or Cotton Bowl. I just do not think a conference will get 4 teams in NY6 bowls, though there is no conference limit like there was in BCS era. Guaranteed spots might squeeze out Penn State if Purdue wins.

What I think you are suggesting is that Purdue would still go to Citrus as B1G champs, and that is inconceivable. Purdue is essentially in a situation of win go to Pasadena, lose go to Orlando (unless Citrus selects Illini then they go to Tampa). Penn State needs Michigan to win to ensure a spot in NY6. Purdue would be a NY6 bowl thief.

A mediocre Big Ten team? He’s got us in the right bowl game at least but saying that we are mediocre is ridiculous. Lol
Unfortunately, that is the perception of national media. Losing 3 out of 4 to close season will get that type of perception, especially if they did not actually watch the Illini play a snap (excluding highlights) outside of the Michigan game.

This bowl game will be opportunity to make a statement about the direction of the program to the national pundits.
