Excellent! I would take it even if it is a backdoor bowl bid!

I am still angry about the play calling in the two losses with a lead late in the game to punt on 4th and short inside the 40 yd line. Line up and get the 1st down. Give your team the chance to win the damn game!

Personally, I would not be a fan of a 5 - 7 Illini team going to a bowl game.

There are 9 B1G tie ins not counting the BCS games. Assuming we get a BCS game, OSU or MSU, we will get one of the bids
Only if we're bowl eligible, though. So, we need to either win 6 or win 5 and hope there are not not enough 6-win bowl eligible teams.

True as I was thinking we will win the NW game. We will be no worse than 5-7 but I feel we will be 6-6 as I am not impressed with Iowa. We can run against them. CBS has us in the Quick Lane Bowl game against Toledo.

For anyone that doesn't think we should participate in a bowl as a 5-7 team keep in mind the number of practices this coaching staff would be missing out on. Assuming we go to the quick lane bowl on December 26th we would get 14-16 extra practices to develop the younger guys and build for next season which is about the equivalent of an extra spring practice without as strict regulations on contact.

Going to a bowl game would be a symbolic year one step. The team, coaches, staff, etc. will be rewarded for their efforts. I think they all want that. Going forward, no one will remember or care how we qualifed.

Didn’t Lovie only use about half of the allowed practices? That’s when I was done with him.
I agree a bowl game would be huge for the program. No it probably wouldn’t be a great game but for recruiting it would be huge.

I don't believe in participation trophies. Kind of old fashioned that way. Thanks for asking.
But if not everyone who participates gets one, it's not really a participation trophy. But I get it. Grade inflation, social safety nets, human rights. It seems like everyone is getting something for nothing and the world is going to pot.

So you’d rather Illinois sit at home and a 5-7 Tulsa or Old Dominion team go to a bowl instead?

They’re not going to cancel the bowls if they don’t have enough 6-6 teams to fill out the slate. If someone is going to go, I’d rather it be Illinois. Especially in year 1 of a new coaching regime. It’s basically an extra month of Spring practice.

Besides, they don’t draw names out of a hat. It’s a reward for doing well academically. It’s earned on merit. That’s not a participation trophy in my book.

Exactly. IMO there are too many bowl games but I'm always happy for an illini bowl game regardless of record

Of course lets beat Iowa this week, but even if we just get one more win, we might be bowling!
Regarding discussion of 5 win B1G teams receiving bowl bids: Both Rutgers and Maryland currently have 5 wins each. Both face difficult games this week with Michigan at Maryland and Rutgers at Penn St. If they both lose this weekend it will set up a "winner gets a bowl bid" match in the final week with Maryland at Rutgers....winner will have 6 wins and loser likely only 5 wins. The twitter post in redwingillini11's post says the tie breaker for B1G bowl bids of 5 win teams is academic score and, assuming the Illini get to 5 wins, that Illini would win bowl bid on that basis. Would feel for Maryland fans in that scenario with their head-to-head win over the Illini (unless their head-to-head victory trumps our academic score, then we'll all be on the "should have gone for it on 4th down" train).

But, as Coach B would say....."we're only focused on the University of Iowa game". Beat the Squawks!

But if there aren't enough bowl eligible Big Ten teams, I don't think the conference tie-in matters. Bowls have to go outside the conference for one. And if there aren't enough bowl eligible teams nationally, I thought the 5 win academic ranking is national. At least I'm pretty sure that's how it used to be and maybe it has changed.
