Write better NIL contracts that require playing in bowl game for final payout. If they don't want the money the can sit out. School is getting plenty of money to play in bowl - share it with players.

....It might not be part of the College Football Playoff (CFB), but the Citrus Bowl in Orlando still generates plenty of hype each year. A New Year's tradition for decades, the Citrus Bowl yields the largest non-CFB payout ($8.55 million per team) and typically features two top-25 ranked team...

Wouldn’t that require teams above them to lose?
Under regular circumstances it would... BUT .... It's Alabama... it's the SEC.... and the committee probably focuses on which teams will garner the more EYEBALLS on TV, and buy the MOST tickets, and bring the MOST hoopla.... So I'm betting they'll do almost anything to get Alabama into the CFP...

Whoa, slow down there. Going through the years, there was no championship game until the crappy BCS system originated for 1998 season. The CFP format was in itself controversial when introduced for the 2014 season. There were some that complained that the regular season will become less important when 4 team playoff was introduced, and even more so now. An even larger format would be even worse, and I am not sure it would be more entertaining at all. You would have to somehow include all 10 conference championship winners, and many of these first round games would be laughers (even worse from a viewability standpoint than many of the early bowl season games). The purpose of the playoff should be to have the clear standaway best teams competing for a championship. No way we should be seeing a 5-loss team battling for a championship (and that would happen if the field got that large). Football is much different than March Madness. Not to mention the possible need to shorten the regular season for this large of a playoff.

If you want to get the bowl games more interesting (with less opt outs), then a revenue sharing model would need to be introduced (in order to entice them to play). I do not ever see that happening; but in the meantime, you can still enjoy the games for what they are: a nice vacation, a celebration of a good season, and the invaluable additional practices you get for earning a bowl berth.
Then make it 32 teams and drop one regular season game (e.g. our Thanksgiving game with Northwestern).

Because of players sitting out I am not interested in any bowl game. Especially not interested in getting bombed by Alabama's 4 star third stringers. Season ends Saturday. We need to clobber the kitties!
I don't understand why players opting out is a problem. They eventually exhaust their eligibility anyway and you don't stop being invested in the team....

I agree. It's also why I don't understand concerns about injury reports. So what if Franklin doesn't play on Saturday. He's not playing a single Saturday next year. Let's get that process going!

It's also a great way to look at recruiting misses. Let's face it. Anyone we lose for this 2025 class wouldn't be suiting up for us in 2029 anyway. What's the big deal?

Anyway, anyhow... I'd be surprised if it isn't one of Bama, Ole Miss, South Carolina in the Citrus.

Have no clue which one I'd prefer...
We want it to be Alabama for a whole host of reasons- prestige/ national attention, recruiting, how fired up our players would be, etc

They will have a bunch of opt outs and we shouldn’t have that many- even PB, I can’t see him turning down an opportunity to torch Alabama’s backup CB’s on National tv and raise his draft stock. I think that goes for everyone- we don’t have any first or second round picks that have nothing to gain- all of our players have a great deal to gain in this game

If PB is moving up the draft boards, as is being reported, he'd be insane to play in a meaningless game(for him). Bowl games, if outside of the playoffs, are basically a reward to the players and fans for a nice season. The games carry no tradition and no meaning as anymore.

He needs to avoid injury and show what he has at the combine or if he gets an invite to the Senior Bowl(or something of the like).

Not to mention some that are planning on transferring in offseason. An injury in a bowl game would hurt their NIL possibilities elsewhere, so they may have incentive to sit out.

Portal opens Dec 3 and closes Dec 28. If guys intend to transfer, they will be in the portal before Illinois even starts practicing for the bowl.

My question is next year when the schools are paying the players, can they pay the players based on each game played? Incentivize playing the bowl game by actually being paid for the amount of games you actually do play

They probably can. The question is will they? The market decides that aspect.

it won’t really change the opt outs as those guys with an NFL future have much more to lose should they get injured , versus make playing in the bowl

I doubt we will see a 32 team playoff anytime soon. Top teams will deserve an early round bye. The next expansion would take into account giving a few more teams a first round bye, likely to 6 teams. I would expect to see a 18 or 22 team playoff.

Given the opt outs, low attendance, etc, I can see this happening sooner than later. A lot more revenue can be generated with an 8-3 Bama team playing 3 bowl games, than a 6-6 Montana team playing in a single bowl.

Fair enough. Not to mention it probably gets some Bama guys to stay opted in to the bowl. Sucks as I was really looking forward to a Bama v. Illini game which is moot now seeing this plus the rumors that Citrus is going to take Iowa even on B2B appearances

Anyone here worried that the Citrus Bowl IG account mentioned 12 key games to watch this week - and failed to include the Illini game? Unfortunately keeps tracking to rumor that they are taking Iowa. Again.

No concerns at all - Illinois isn’t a big game at all (NU is AWFUL) while Iowa Nebraska is always a huge rivalry game.

When do they announce what bowl we will go to?
Dec 8, immediately after the CFP selection. I've never watched the show itself so idk if it's all broadcasted like the NCAA tournament selection, but it's announcements start coming out immediately after some way, somehow. Some years it starts to trickle out early through different avenues, but how early depends on the factors determining our bowl (so this year whether IU is in the CFP or not).

Thank you PleaseMakeABowlGame and Fuze. I want to start planning a for the trip did the bowl game, but I'm afraid to start planning before the announcement.

If IU wins today, along with an Illini victory, it is very safe to make travel plans to Orlando this evening.
