2004 ACC was something else. Luol Deng, Jarrett Jack, Julius Hodge, Chris Paul, that whole UNC team that would beat us the next year, etc. Those were the days when they would totally dominate the B1G/ACC Challenge.

It's probably not complementary to his pro prospects or the long-term status of our program to say so, but remembering Julius Hodge he was a very Ayo-like figure. Monster recruit who became and immensely clutch player who lived for the big moment and who totally elevated the team.

Was it? There were 4 teams over .500 in the conference, only 3 teams made to the second weekend and two made it to the Final 4, due to Ga. Tech geting hot, with no teams winning it all. Not that great from what I'm seeing.

There were only 9 teams in the ACC in those days, and 6 of them were ranked in the top 20.

They won the B1G/ACC Challenge 7-2 (of course, our success notwithstanding, that was not a strong period for the B1G)

OK? I'm not seeing greatness there. It looks like a normal conference results with Ga. Tech making a strong run in the tournament.

Well according to KenPom it's the strongest conference of all time, and the games were great to watch on TV (6 great teams in a conference of 14 vs 6 great teams in a conference of 9 means a lot more exciting games), so take it or leave it, whatever.

You are throwing the word great around like it's water. None of those teams were great. Don't care what KenPom says the results don't show this conference in that season as being anywhere close to great. So I'll take my own eyes watching the results of those teams in the regular season and tournament which were not an exception.

Kenpom snoom, the BIG in 1989 was as good as any league Inever remember? Illinois, as good as they were, did not even win the league.

KenPom is an objective efficiency measure, and by that measure that 2004 ACC with 7 of 9 teams in the top 26 teams overall and 2/3 of the conference making the NCAA tournament as top 6 seeds is the best conference all time by that measure, which is more meaningful than a thousand eye tests.

That would be about the equivalent of 10 B1G teams making the tournament as top 8 seeds this year, which is probably not going to happen. It looks like it could be as high as 6 teams in the top 6 seeds, which is still pretty impressive though.

KenPom numbers only date back to 2002, but surely the '89 Big Ten would be up there.

And of course, the average quality of the teams is only one way to look at this. The 16 team behemoth Big East of the ~2010 period probably had more good teams than any conference ever, but they also had some real garbage in the likes of DePaul, Rutgers and South Florida.

For a 14 team league to be in contention for the best average ever really speaks to how crazy good the B1G is this year. I believe 10 of the 14 have been ranked at one point or another.

I think it’s a pretty big advantage this year to get a number one seed to avoid Baylor or Gonzaga and not getting another top Big Ten team in our bracket means we get a little softer bracket - which is a double benefit

This is the biggest gap there's been between the top two teams and the rest of the field since....you know when.

I know what KenPom is. In this situation I don't care. I see 4 teams with the winning record in conference, 3 teams making to the second weekend, 2 to the Final Four, 1 to the champ. game and none winning it all. That is not greatest conference season of all time. Now let's move on please.
