I think Underwood has an exciting offensively philosophy and everyone (on this board) speaks of Xs and Os from an offensive standpoint but OSU was 305th in terms of opponents ppg. Yes some of that could be a function of playing a faster offensive style, however that's gotta be cleaned up. We struggled last year because we couldn't defend as a team until middle of February. If we had just defended better, we had enough offensive firepower to be a tourney team.

Yes his first year.... but look at his previous gig and note the trend toward much improved defense. No worries with this guy!

I'm alway from the keyboard for a couple of hours and I come back and this happens. But anyway, I get to say it:

I TOLD YOU SO!

I said that Josh Whitman would find someone completely off the radar, someone that no one was talking about, and

I WAS RIGHT!

And I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing about what I'm talking about.

Oh, and whatever anyone thinks about this hire... Josh Whitman just made a complete under the radar poaching of a Power 5 coach. And not one of those "golden parachute" type deals.

Whitman is quite clearly a boss.

I have no doubt Whitman (who had a large budget for basketball coach) would be willing to match or beat KSU's offer should that day arrive.

Either way, that's like the best problem to have.

What does Weber make at KSU? I can't see them paying more than $3 million/year for Underwood in addition to buying out the contract.

Also, like you said, not anything that we should be remotely worried about. Just curious/trying to reiterate that point.

Weber will make a reported $2.15 million next year, assuming he stays at KSU.

I just realized this is the 6th coach Ive watched at Illinois since I was born. Thats an ave of just over 5.4 yrs per coach.

Hope underwood can bring up that average! :chief:

Goemaw saw the contract he got at Illinois and seemed resigned to the fact they will never get him now. That is unless he fails here and "they can pick up our crap again".

...ball moves quickly, aggressive passes deep into the post to cutters, extra passes to find open 3s, not a lot of dribbling and looking around. The style is fun to watch and effective - lots of 3s and layups, minimize contested 2s. Looking forward to seeing this with our Illini

OMG music to my ears ... er... eyes. Or sight for sore eyes. Or whatever, I like it!

Not complaining, but wow, that came completely out of nowhere!

Did anyone on this board even mention Underwood's name -- even in a pie-in-the-sky sort of way?

I don't think I'll bother with this blog any more, since obviously none of you have any idea what's going on with Illinois basketball.

(just kidding)

As someone who read each and every post in the seemingly-never-ending Coaching Search thread, the answer is "Yes". Underwood's name came up a few times. The universal response was that he was a heck of a good coach but that he'd been at OkSU just a year and UI would never be able to outbid T-Boone for his services.

Little did we know that their AD Holder had alienated Underwood to the point the latter would not even give them a chance to response to UI's offer.

He has stated time and again what a great job/place Illinois was. Far more than any former coach I have ever seen before. He took the Kansas jo, which any sane person with his background would have

And he also stated time and time again that he was at Illinois "for the long haul". Given his response to Underwood's hiring, I don't believe he really meant what he said about how special Illinois is.

Every coach says his school is the best school and he's going to be there until the end - until he isn't. Nature of the job.
