I think it's about time for us to give some real props to Barb Wilson for making the right choice hiring JW!!! She might be the real mastermind behind all of these great hires:thumb: Just sayin' she did get bashed a lot on here but it's all working out in the end.:clappy::clappy::clappy:

A couple of things:

Underwood was under-the-radar. :D

Oklahoma State is the Cowboys. University of Illinois is the Illini. Underwood is going over to the other side: cowboys to Indians. :chief:

Oklahoma is the current home of the remnant of the Illini Nation, the Peoria Tribe. :shakehands:

Getting serious, sorta: Underwood having spent ten years at Western Illinois, he knows something about the state--admittedly in Forgottonia--such as which is the pointy end and which is the flat end.

Underwood having procreated here, he and his family sorta kinda has roots in the state. :clappy:

Underwood having spent a lot of time in the Midwest, and willing to come back to the prairie--OK, a step up from Oklahoma to be sure--he's less likely to be dazzled by a bright-lights-of-the-city offer in the future. And less likely to freak out more than necessary by a tornado warning. He he's more likely to be here for a while. :thumb:

OK, you may return to your regularly scheduled basketball talk. Just remember, I told you so. :whoo:

I watch a fair amount of UConn Womens basketball, and I see a lot of similarities in the offensive style - ball moves quickly, aggressive passes deep into the post to cutters, extra passes to find open 3s, not a lot of dribbling and looking around. The style is fun to watch and effective - lots of 3s and layups, minimize contested 2s. Looking forward to seeing this with our Illini

Maybe I'll attend our 100th consecutive win, too.

:illinois:

Noticed the same and defense also seems similar. Hope the results are the same.

I just got home, I was out to dinner with the family and got a text form my eldest sister, also an UI grad, who asked me if Underwood was a good hire. I just texted ABSOLUTELY!

I am excited about next season, this is going to be fun watching him turn things around...and he will. Plus, this guy just looks like a BIG coach. I wish he could have coached Mav and Malcolm.

Great job JW!

I'd like to call for a moment of silence for the " PG dribbling the ball for 25 seconds play". RIP to that (and to the brown-eyed handsome man Chuck Berry). Maybe someone could do a montage vid of the dribble play over the years.

For those familiar with Underwood's offensive and defensive concepts, how does the returning roster and incoming recruits (assuming they all stick) fit what he'd like to do? Who fits well? Who doesn't?

Breaking down his year at OSU;
He inherited a team that was 12-20 and 3-15 in the Big 12. They were 308th in scoring at 66 ppg.

This season they were 20-13 overall and 9-9 in conference and received a 10 seed in the NCAA tourney. They were 6th in the country in scoring with 85.7 ppg. Their SOS (strength of schedule) was 3rd in the country.

They scored over 100 points 5 times all in non-conference games, with their highest in a 117-72 victory over NCAA qualifier New Orleans.
They scored in the 90's 7 times, including wins over UCONN 98-90, Georgetown 97-70, @Wichita St 93-76 (NCAA 10 seed), Arkansas 99-71 (NCAA 8 seed), and Oklahoma 96-92
After a rough 0-6 start in conference play, they found their groove and won 9 out of the next 10 conference games. This included 5 road wins (Texas Tech, Oklahoma, West Virginia, TCU and KSU)

All in all extremely impressive what he did in just one season. I am the most excited I've been about Illini Hoops in 10 years! Looking forward to next season and Maui 2018!

Offensively, all fit exceedingly well. Like I'm super giddy bro.

Defensively might be a struggle. He likes to extend and press and we were a packline under Groce.

KN and TJL will help with that. Is this possibly what gets DJW to stay? With his length and athleticism, he could become a good defensive player. Also, it looked like AJ was working to establish himself as a defensive option as well.

Just came back and read the news. Obviously, surprised as everyone else.

Brad Underwood is intense, he is Bob Huggins and Frank Martin without the baggage. His style of play is attractive, attacking basketball.

I do not know much about his recruiting though, so that remains to be seen. If he can recruit and upgrade talent, he will be successful.

Going to toot my own horn here a bit. Not sure how to post some of the talk in the coaching thread, but I had an inkling Underwood was going to be a part of the process.

Had him on my list and thought we might have a shot with his low salary. Great hire. Love the style and we FINALLY have an identity!

Well that's awesome news. Slowly getting excited for next year. This would be a huge help towards us being good next year.

I was gonna give you a shout out. But I was too busy rejoicing.

Oh, and whatever anyone thinks about this hire... Josh Whitman just made a complete under the radar poaching of a Power 5 coach. And not one of those "golden parachute" type deals.

Whitman is quite clearly a boss.

Yes, yes he did. Yes he is. More than anything else, I'm so dang happy to have JOSH WHITMAN.
