I wonder how the KSU AD and fans feel. If Weber doesn't leak into the tourney last minute, how likely would he have been canned and our new coach would be in Manhattan?

My son in law is a KSU fan, and he's pissed. He wanted Weber gone last year and replaced with UWood.

We just suspended usual University hiring procedures to announce the hiring of a winning Power Five coach at a salary that exceeds all but two other Big Ten schools (one, technically, since Crean got fired) in a process that closed in under a week, required no search committee, faculty advisory committee, search firm, or anything of the kind, and took place, it appears, on private jets zipping around the country and at various locales on the dime of our high-dollar boosters. Not even a whiff of it leaked until hours beforehand. And the coach is not a minority.

How many circa-2009ish hobby horses of Illini fans are crushed in that one paragraph?

We're still a loser for the time being, only winning cures that. But we're no longer a joke.

This is a very good post ...

There wasn't even time for all of the ex Illini to complain about the process and suggest that (not them of course) but that an Illini should be hired. Would be nice to wrap up the assistant coaching process soon for the same reasons. And no reason to discuss the Chicago stuff, old BOT stuff, etc. Days are over!

Well if he is destined for that K-State job, $8.5 million is a mighty nice start.

Yes, hopefully this will tamp down some of those thinking he might bolt for K-State next year. I don't see K-State putting out $12M (buyout + $3.5M for first year) for their first year after firing Weber...

I am so fired up about this hire. Seeing Huggy and Frank in the S16 makes me giddy to think we might see a similar type of resurgence very soon...

And if they do, adding that buyout onto the resources we've already demonstrated is Captain Insane-o money. We're in fine shape either way.

I've always gotten a chuckle out of watching Okie State. Their arena is so "historic" that they have to announce that it's historic, all over the walls.

It is actually an awesome place. GI is a fantastic venue . Don't forget they draw +10,000 regularly to NCAA wrestling events . I'm actually headed down there (Stilly ) with wifey on Friday to see my lad who's graduating in May . He loves the place - the students , the campus & the culture.

You would probably never know it , but that campus is really really nice . T Boone & other oil rich donors gave that school a ton of $ the past 15 years

We poached their coach . They have their own issues re their AD . No reason for anyone here to down talk that school . It's about 40% the size of UIUC, and they outdraw us in a lot of sports , and are like in the top 4-5 of NCAA championships in all sports combined . Wrestling , golf , baseball and
X country are all big time programs .

Gregg Marshall's wife was escorted from the game after loss to Kentucky. Great coach but not a class act. Think we got the right guy.

Wow. The rider reducing the buyout if JW is no longer at UIUC is interesting as well.

Does anyone know if this type of rider is typical? If it is not then I would assume that BU asked for the rider.

How does her being escorted from the game relate to his character?

K-State worries are silly.

Mackovic, Kruger, and Self moved up, not down.

Self left for KU, not Oklahoma State.

For anyone worried bout underwood leaving after years one or two.

year 1) 8.5 year 2) 7.4 year 3) 6.3 The buyouts in his contract. I don't see a Kansas state paying 8.5 7.4 or 6.3

He's not taking his 4th job in 4-6 years unless a North Carolina or Duke comes calling. And if that happens, we're probably in good shape anyways.

And that would mean that he's done well enough for them to want to buy him out. So our program would be in better shape than it is now and we'd be getting a pile of money. If he's doing that great, I'm sure I'd rather keep him, but we'll be in a significantly better position than we were for this search.

Maybe Kansas washes out on Thursday and Kansas State poaches the Jayhawks coach on Friday. Would he settle for that?

WHAT?!?!? Self leaving KU for KSU because he didn't make the elite 8? I want some of what you're smoking.

In cyberspace, no one can hear you snark.

Remember, I did begin with "Maybe..." But wouldn't Kansas' Little Brother just love to do that to Big Brother Lawrence if they had half a chance? Didn't The Coach say something about some job in Kansas being his Dream Job? Which one was that again?
