A lesser AD would have either jumped early on Cuonzo or waited for the Indiana job to be filled before trying to grab the scraps. JW clearly had a plan and executed it perfectly.
Even if you somehow are underwhelmed by Underwood, you have to be impressed by how decisive JW was in the process.

FWIW, my 10 year old who won't watch Illinois basketball with me, but watches at least 4 games per weak is impressed. Says he may even watch next year.

Mac Irvin Fire twitter calls it a great hire.
Didn't see this one coming with all the other smoke screens out there. Good hire in my opinion. I like his offense and he has had success everywhere he has coached. JW did his homework and brought in a good coach who will lead the Illini back from the wasteland. I also saw that Demonte Williams is still committed, Trent Frasier tweeted a photo in an Illini jersey. Tillman and Pickett are still quiet on their intentions. However, no player is bigger than the Illinois basketball program.
I know, right? But he has had fraught relationships with his coaches before.
I think JW was under the gun to hire someone before the IL Coaching Search thread hit 5000 posts. Just made it at post #4870.
Underwood sounds like a really solid hire. My only worry is that he may bolt back to K-State as soon as Weber is fired, given his deep roots there. The fact that head coaches rarely jump between programs within the same conference makes me wonder if we will be his stepping stone back to the Big 12 ala Bill Self.
