I wasn't buying it at first, but if they can get along, I'm warming up to the idea of Walker remaining on staff.

The defensive system will be way different than what Walker is used to as well. He's been working with packline guys in the millers and Groce. Underwood is gonna pick up full and deny in the halfcout. Kinda like Purdue but probably a little more intense.

This coaching staff is going be awesome once we add Monty Williams as our other head coach on Tuesday.

The thing about Underwood is his style of play. Recruits will love it. Chicago recruits will love it. Wide open, pedal-to-the-metal.

You know what I like about this hire? Whitman did it quietly. He went about his business and made a hell of a hire of a coach that is well-liked and well-respected in college basketball circles.

In Whitman I trust. Underwood will make Illini basketball great again!

Very excited for the future of Illinois basketball.
Great Hire!!! For those questioning this hire you don't know college basketball.

insiders

I think the insiders are being fed false info of recent to see where the leaks exists.

I'll be honest, I did not see this coming but I'm more optimistic about this than Bennett or Marshall. I just don't think they had the personalities or playing schemes to attract the players we need at Illinois. I hope Underwood flusters the daylights out of the kitties so Chris Collins can no longer be deemed the anointed one.

I don't know how many schollies we will have or what not, but if Justin smith asks out of his Indiana commitment, he fits this system so perfectly. Mark smith? Don't even get me started.

One thing that seems not to have changed since the last time we did this (MT & JG) is that we don't have blue-blood pull to grab our 1-A "grand slam" candidate(s) at will. But everything after that seems 180 degrees under Josh Whitman. I'll admit I'm not a knowledgeable enough fan to have really "got" the significance of this hire when the rumor mill exploded this morning but seeing the national press's reaction, it's obvious we've turned a corner. Sure, we "whiffed" on (insert name) but this feels fun the way the Lovie hire felt fun. A bit of "how'dya like them apples" for once. I'm stoked.

Just because we might of whiffed on other coachs maybe. JW got us a dandy

He's trying to say that Underwood would leave us quickly to coach for his Alma Mater, Kansas State.
Even if that's so, you have to think our program will be left in even better shape by that time, making us an even more attractive job. With Whitman, I'll trust him again to find the right replacement when the time comes, because I now believe him 100% when he says #WeWillWin.

Delaney. I think we lose Whitman to politics though.

The two big Illini coaching hires are great. But there is a big lesson here. No individual coach is as important to your program as is your AD. It all flows down from there. You've got to have a great AD, and another one on your radar if the first one leaves. Same thing with the pros except for them it's all about who owns the team. Great owner, great team. Bad owner...

I just hate the reaction of "what does the CPL think of this." The state were in i guess. He will let have to make the drive up, swallow his pride and kiss the rings.

Irvin family likes him and Robert smith at Simeon at least publicly says he wants to send his kids to Illinois. Bridge can be built. Honestly wouldn't be surprised to see a Robert smith put on staff in some way. Underwood did it at osu.

This Guy is no "ring kisser"... CPL coaches will be lining up for a piece of this one

Sounds like a really good hire. I need to study more on Coach Underwood, however. This was a surprise hire.

Interesting clip from Underwood on selection Sunday.

Says he hasn't seen a lot on Michigan (their first round opponent) but says he watched their first big ten tournament game on his iPad.

Who was that against again? [emoji848]

I would also caution that we take a step back. I expect big things from the football program and bigger things from the basketball program, but so far neither of those things has happened.

In football yes, it was going to take time. In basketball, every player still on the roster and every incoming recruit fits the system. Turnaround can happen very quickly. Esp if we add mark smith

Up tempo, hard nosed defense, disciple of Bob Huggins and Frank Martin. Zactly what I wanted, truthfully though, he never entered into my mind as a serious candidate. Does this count when I said I felt it would be someone not mentioned by our posters. I'm sure he was mentioned, but not often or seriously.
