He’s 8th in the big 10…..
Hmmm. Obviously he agreed to it, but that seems too low to me. I know some stupid money has been thrown around, but I'd sure like to see him in the top 5 with what he's done at a program that was at the very bottom of the B10. (Big 16!)

edit: To put it another way, there certainly aren't 7 other coaches in the conference I would prefer to be leading Illinois.

I mean it’s 6 million a year+incentives plus $500k retention bonus per year. The average salary in the conference is around 7.5 mil. With Rhule, Day, Tucker, Harbaugh all marking over that. Franklin possibly as well.

he’s making great money
working in state of the art facilities

the things JW needs to focus on,
are not salary or offices or practice facilities , rather EVERYTHING ELSE that goes into running a top notch football program in the B1G

Pretty sure all the coaches like the salary thing, but you could be right.

Would have to think maybe BB is leaving money on the table to retain assistants. If I remember that was a big reason for him leaving Wisconsin and I think RW was one of the highest paid assistant last year.

Do those one year extensions triggered by meeting specific goals include a bump in salary, or another year at the same?

I think it’s good we didn’t go crazy like Michigan state, but I think we need to be prepared to move him to the top 6 or so in the B1G if he puts together a couple more years like this one. I just don’t think we’ll ever outspend OSU, Mich, PSU, Neb or USC for a football coach.

It’s much easier to increase his salary in the future than take it down, like you reference where MSU finds themselves. He’s had one great season and got rewarded, and it doesn’t have to be the last one if that success continues.

For quite awhile I have discussed college sports and developed opinions about which ones being "Basketball schools" versus "Football schools". Based on nuances and "feelings", you think of schools one way or the other first. Many are obvious. Example: I tell them "Pitt is a football school, not a basketball school". They hate that. I have always said that my (almost) 50 years as an Illini fan, that "Illinois is a basketball school". Not going to boar you with my historical examples or interpretations. In my completely subjective and possibly irrational conclusion, this is my first time seeing what looks like the administrations' serious commitment to the football program. I don't mean just the Bielema contract. More than that. I am very happy for BB and us.
Just a wild guess Bbuck...........President of the Illinois Pork Producers?

Yeah, the potential is absolutely there. When analyzing potential, it is difficult (but necessary IMO) to try not to weigh recent results too heavily, as fans naturally become more engaged and show up more and support the program more financially when you are winning games. One would be foolish to think of Iowa or Wisconsin as inherently more "big time" than Illinois ... they have just strung together the types of consistent winning seasons that get fans engaged and willing to show up and spend money every year - the same thing we have achieved with our basketball fan base and something that is absolutely achievable with our football fan base, as well!
Thank you for stating this. So so so accurate. Not so terribly long ago, Illinois football was superior to both.

Only OSU, MICH, PSU and USC are out of our "immediate" reach.
