I think some of the Weber hate comes from the way he left. It seemed like he blamed everyone but himself for the team's lack of success and openly gushed over other players.
The presser where he threw Illini players under the bus and salivated over Robbie Hummel did it for me.....

I appreciate honesty , but use some common sense ...........

Bruce did lead us farther than any other coach has in the dance , but it also was a regime with funerals and incessant hollering from the sidelines with very low scoring games after the 2005 squad left..........

MVC or OVC seems like the right level for Bubbles to continue with what's left in his career .....I hope where ever that is , that they don't have a dress code , cause BW's hair is gonna get down to his waist before the NCAA does anything to the chosen cheaters........JMHO

When I think back to Weber's last years, he hurt himself with some of his decisions. I do not know what went on behind the scenes, but he had Myers Leonard on the Bench and Jeremy RIchmond two 5 star Prospects. That team was loaded and he played Billy Cole. I know a lot of people at Illinois could not understand why Leonard did not play more.

Illinois the last 5 coaches

Kruger - liked him as a person and good coach
Self - liked the results. Bill seemed like a used car salesman (a very good one) and decent coach. Had program recognized at national level.
Weber - liked him as a person and above average coach but didn't recruit well which impacts leading program.
Groce - liked him as a person and below average coach (or below average at leading P5 program)
Underwood - like him as a person and above average coach. Best combination of likability, coaching and leading program. Have said it many times - program is returning to level and prominence of early to mid 2000's

Would think he has enough money to retire and play golf. Would not take a step down at his age.

Weber was a really good dude. Hindsight is 20/20 but going from him to Groce was a disaster. I would've been much happier with him for five more years. I'm glad he found a spot to coach another 10 years in with moderate success. Hopefully he finds a way to stay in the game like TV or another gig.

As to Kansas State, how much can we make fun of their fans for expecting Underwood? I know we have no reason to fear at all. But out of an abundance of caution, I want to check before we jinx ourselves.

One thing that's absolutely true about Weber is he's as clean as any coach gets and it's why his success will and has been limited.

I remain on the side that he is better than your average P6 coach, strictly in coaching ability. But you don't make final fours and championships without getting in the muck, even a little bit. It's his biggest weakness and maybe his greatest strength, but it's someone no coach has or ever will overcome. There will be occasional sparks (see the E8 run KSU had) but there a butt load of luck involved in that.

if guenther had the gonads to fire him a few years prior I think we'd look back on the Weber Era more fondly.

I'm not a defender of BAM - I thought he was the right coach when we needed him to be after Self, but we waited too long to move on
but the guy won 6 conference titles across three different schools, close to 500 wins, NC finals, elite 8, etc. he is in no way a "below average" coach, he is easily "top quartile" of college basketball coaches

Coach Weber is now a very, very wealthy man who got to do a job he loved for a long time, and if he so chooses, will have more opportunities to select from. I’d rather see that tone coming from him in place of the whining, tbh.

I don't see it as "whining" as much as it is him looking across the landscape and saying "i'm not wrong". 'Cause he's not wrong.
I think any reasonable human would have some bitterness in his situation.
Granted he has certainly come across whiny several times over the years.

Yep. He got pretty close to the most out of what talent he had, but he just couldn't sustain high enough talent due to his unwillingness to get dirty and his (real or perceived) lack of recruiting chops. If we're talking straight x's and o's, though, he's one of the best in the business, and despite his stubbornness and occasional lack of ownership/leadership, I still like him as a person. We all have our faults, and Bruce's could certainly be much worse.

My reaction to KSU fans thinking they'll poach Brad is less mockery and more confusion/pity.

With all honestly, Bruce Weber is a nice guy and is a really good coach. It's unfortunate that he just couldn't recruit well enough and win enough games when he was here in the Big Ten during his time at Illinois. Really have no hard feelings against him. Say what you will about him but he got Illinois the closest ever to winning a championship back in 2005.
I honestly think Weber's issues here were more complicated than most paint them (not saying you!). He is a great coach and he recruited pretty well, all things considered, but he didn't have the type of "CEO swag" that Self and Underwood do, and I think you need that to run a program like Illinois long-term. We are the sole state school in a massive hotbed of talent with a huge/rabid/hungry fan base that is desperate for its first banner. You can't just come here and have a great Xs/Os background and recruit some kids good enough to make the NCAAs every other year and occasionally get a good team, because we have seen more than enough throughout modern history how RELATIVELY easy it is to get us back to conference contenders and perennial top 25 teams.

Bruce seems like an awesome man, and I remember being so sad when we had to let him go. I honestly thought he was perfect for a KSU, just not an Illinois. Hell, I think he would have been extremely successful (probably more so) at a Minnesota, for example.
