Happy he was able to end his career on his terms after battling his illnesses. Sure fire Hall of Famer.
I was all for trading away draft capital for an established NHL'er but this seems like a serious overpay.Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway to the Hawks for #4, #45 and Louis Crevier.
Why thoBowen Byram and Jordan Greenway to the Hawks for #4, #45 and Louis Crevier.
Yes it is.I was all for trading away draft capital for an established NHL'er but this seems like a serious overpay.
Great question. Maybe Davidson is playing 4D chess or maybe he took. I'm thinking the latter. Why tho
Initially, I was neutral on it but now I hate it. Byram is oft injured and doesn't play much defense. He's essentially a further along Korchinski (although I think Korchinski is getting "better" at D but doesn't seem to be improving at O but that's another discussion) and Korchinski is 3 years younger.initially, I hated it
upon further review, I don't. yes, the price was steep. yes, there's no certainty that Byram is going to ascend to a true #1. but Stenberg is gonna be off the board and the Hawks were looking at another D man (don't really need a 2C). another ~5-6 year wait (with no guarantee) versus a 25 year old VVG D man who totally fits the timeline. and the idea that KFC was bidding against himself is ludicrous.
as is the idea that Byram's not going to sign a long term extension (no way the Hawks trade for him without assurances)
plus, you gotta keep Bedard happy. evidently, he was on the trade call and he approved. FO needed to make some get help moves. this is step 1. long term extension coming
Greenway is a cap dump, #45 is near nothing (especially to the Hawks). Crevier is a loss (VG stick and shot), but he's charmin soft and a 3rd pairing guy on a good team
If only Byram played actual defense. They give up a ton of shots already. Getting Byram isn't going to help in that regard. Hope he scores more than he gives up.getting a high-pedigree D-man with 300+ games under his belt is going to help a ton. his 23-24+ mpg is going to considerably lighten the load on our young D. as PP1 QB, I expect Byram's points production to take a significant jump

I'd rather have Reid since he's a RD with the 4th pick than Byram and then you can deal from the surplus of D. I suppose they can still do that although I'd say the four being gone takes them out on Robertson (if they were ever in on him).
If this is all Davidson does to "improve" the team, then I am disappointed, but I will be hopeful it's better than it seems right now because they still don't have a legit winger to play with Bedard. If they don't get one, then it doesn't matter about the current timeline because it won't be as far along as Davidson thinks it is.
One gets the sense the market for that pick was not robust for a reason. Why tho
He’s also three years older. They are both left handed, offensive defensemen. We’ll see what Korchinski looks like in 3 years.Byram played 82 games, back to back (not counting POs). 73 games, IIRC, the season before the last 2
there's no comparison between what Byram is and Korchinski
How much do you think Byram is worth in terms of salary for his next contract? Note that I'm not asking you what you think he'll get next year from someone (assuming it's the Hawks).I didn't write this, but it mirrors my thoughts:
"We traded for an actual NHL player and gave up a draft slot that MIGHT have developed into a player as good as Byram is in 4-5 years (with about as equal of a chance of being slightly better or not as good) as our choice at 4OA likely came down to Reid or Carels...both of which are playing in college 2 if not 3 more seasons before they start taking their lumps and going through NHL growing pains. This is a pretty weak draft and #4OA is more like 7 or 8 in a typical draft (you'll get a shot at a good not necessarily great can't miss prospect).
The cost otherwise was a quarter and a couple of dimes when you are looking for a dollar. Crevier is a 3rd pairing guy on an actual competive team despite being among the tallest midgets here. #45OA is the range of pick we include to move up a few slots in the first round. Greenway if all he does is adds a little toughness and pushes Bura out of the lineup (or better yet, out of town) is a win...because I don't care about Wirtz money for one season when we will be no where near the cap. I actually could see Greenway in a contract year being useful...maybe. We consolidated a bunch of assets none of which matter in the long run other than #4 which will take years to actually pay dividends for a much better present day asset and decent chance Byram is the best player long term too. Was the cost "too much"? Maybe in historic terms (as far as value of #4OA in a typical draft year verses a below average one) and maybe in an enviornment not seeing massive cap increase where there are no UFA's of significance that make it to market anymore. The trade market is out of whack....look at Nemec and Kyrou's returns."
Does Byram make them a playoff team with no other additions, other than bit parts to fill out a lineup? One also senses the need to sell Bedard on the here and now played a role in this. He is sick and tired of losing and has no poker face for it.
