Chicago Blackhawks 2026-2027

#4
Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway to the Hawks for #4, #45 and Louis Crevier.

#8
initially, I hated it

upon further review, I don't. yes, the price was steep. yes, there's no certainty that Byram is going to ascend to a true #1. but Stenberg is gonna be off the board and the Hawks were looking at another D man (don't really need a 2C). another ~5-6 year wait (with no guarantee) versus a 25 year old VVG D man who totally fits the timeline. and the idea that KFC was bidding against himself is ludicrous.

as is the idea that Byram's not going to sign a long term extension (no way the Hawks trade for him without assurances)

plus, you gotta keep Bedard happy. evidently, he was on the trade call and he approved. FO needed to make some get help moves. this is step 1. long term extension coming

Greenway is a cap dump, #45 is near nothing (especially to the Hawks). Crevier is a loss (VG stick and shot), but he's charmin soft and a 3rd pairing guy on a good team

getting a high-pedigree D-man with 300+ games under his belt is going to help a ton. his 23-24+ mpg is going to considerably lighten the load on our young D. as PP1 QB, I expect Byram's points production to take a significant jump

Initially, I was neutral on it but now I hate it. Byram is oft injured and doesn't play much defense. He's essentially a further along Korchinski (although I think Korchinski is getting "better" at D but doesn't seem to be improving at O but that's another discussion) and Korchinski is 3 years younger.

I'd rather have Reid since he's a RD with the 4th pick than Byram and then you can deal from the surplus of D. I suppose they can still do that although I'd say the four being gone takes them out on Robertson (if they were ever in on him).

If this is all Davidson does to "improve" the team, then I am disappointed, but I will be hopeful it's better than it seems right now because they still don't have a legit winger to play with Bedard. If they don't get one, then it doesn't matter about the current timeline because it won't be as far along as Davidson thinks it is.

If only Byram played actual defense. They give up a ton of shots already. Getting Byram isn't going to help in that regard. Hope he scores more than he gives up.

Byram played 82 games, back to back (not counting POs). 73 games, IIRC, the season before the last 2

there's no comparison between what Byram is and Korchinski

He’s also three years older. They are both left handed, offensive defensemen. We’ll see what Korchinski looks like in 3 years.

Another thing I find interesting is that there hasn’t been anything official from the Hawks regarding the trade. Yet.

How much do you think Byram is worth in terms of salary for his next contract? Note that I'm not asking you what you think he'll get next year from someone (assuming it's the Hawks).

One also senses the need to sell Bedard on the here and now played a role in this. He is sick and tired of losing and has no poker face for it.
Does Byram make them a playoff team with no other additions, other than bit parts to fill out a lineup?

it'll be the Hawks. Byram is not eligible to be extended til July 1. I'm guessing 8 x 11+. we'll see

I'm also guessing Bedard will now sign for at least 6 (hopefully, 8)

as to value (BB), I'd guess at least 10, but I haven't recalibrated (to the new cap) yet

doubtful

but Frondell, Kantserov and Lardis will certainly help. I think they need to add a top forward (JR offer sheet?) or two. also need good growth from the kids. Nestrasil, Vanacker, Boisvert and Spellacy in the wings is pretty promising too

I like the forwards that are close to being ready.

Seravalli just said (via tweet) that he thinks Byram will sign 8 x $9.5. if that's true, that would be massive

I think we're going to offer sheet Robertson 8 x $14. Stars can't match
