Cubs sign Jon Jay to a one year deal.

I don't know how to feel about it.

Two reactions:
1) As expected, Dexter Fowler's time with the Cubs has come to an end.
2) There is still quite the OF glut. Heyward, Schwarber, Sczcur, Zobrist, Almora Jr., Jay. I'd expect someone (likely Soler) to be dealt.

Really excited about the Jay signing. But I've been thinking lately and I kind of wondered, am I the only one that still can't really believe we actually won the World Series? It still hasn't sunk in all the way. I always figured I would lose my mind when they finally won it all but I didn't really. I just stood there in disbelief. Definitely not gonna complain too much though, and I can't wait for the 2017 season to begin. Go Cubs!

Pretty much one of Soler, Sczcur or Almora have to be traded. Two of those three if Fowler is re-signed and I'm not 100% sure that won't happen.

I think the Cubs would like to move Soler or Almora as part of a package to get a starting pitcher. If that doesn't work, it could be as a smaller package to get relief help. The Royals seem like a nice trade partner there. They have a lot of intriguing relievers, Almora seems like their kind of player, and Lorenzo Cain is heading to free agency after 2017.

I like Jay as a 4th outfielder. He doesn't slug for anything, but a .290 average and .350 OBP would be a nice performance from him. He's an average CF and a plus defender in the corners.

lol.
Everyone (including me) keeps waiting for the big Soler trade that brings in a starting pitcher. I am starting to think that it might never happen. Soler is hurt too often and has never really had a chance to establish himself as a player that other teams are going to want that badly.

At first I didn't like the signing but then looked his stats up and he's better offensively than I thought. He had a pretty bad year in 2015 but bounced back in 2016 (except for walks). His D is outstanding so overall, I'm good with it. You're right, though, in that Fowler is gone. Just hope he doesn't go to the Cardinals.

Sczcur is out of options so he could just be waived and someone could claim him. With Almora on the team, he's redundant. However the means, I'd say that he's the one to go.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs take a flier on Tyson Ross. Low risk, high reward type of signing, assuming he can overcome his shoulder issue (which are harder to overcome than elbows).

Fangraphs has Ross rated as their second most valuable pitcher in free agency behind Hill. That depends on whether his right arm is actually still attached to the rest of his body though, and with the Padres just up and releasing him, I have to wonder. The Cubs should certainly kick the tires.

It's going to really suck if Dex goes to the Cardinals.

It will.

However, Ian Desmond just signed with the Rockies, and there's speculation that will free up the Rockies' ability to trade Blackman to the Cards.

Between signing Fowler and trading for Blackman, I think I'd rather the Cardinals trade for Blackman.

I do too. Hopefully they can extend Davis.

Losing Soler feels a lot like when they dealt Castro in terms of my liking of the person. Wishing Soler nothing but the best.

Is that official yet? I haven't seen anything that made it official, but I could have missed something.

It's official: #Cubs get Wade Davis from #Royals for Jorge Soler.

Sounds like Fowler is on his way to St. Louis. Hopefully he earned a big, big payday.

Definitely going to sting seeing the best smile in baseball play for a division rival, but I'm happy for him and his family.

Certainly one of the most likeable short-term Cubs in recent memory. Thanks for the memories, Dex (and a 1st round pick from STL).

It's weird. On one hand, he was only a Cub for two years. I shouldn't have gotten that attached to him.

On the other hand, he was the center fielder and lead off man for the two best Cubs teams of my lifetime. And by all accounts was also a really great guy and teammate. A professional and a really likeable.

I hope he got real paid. (It's a bit weird how hush hush the terms of the contract have been.) And I hope he does well whenever he's not playing the Cubs. I look forward to him singing "Ball Game" for the stretch 6 or 7 years down the road.

Cubs also signed Koji Uehara to a one year deal yesterday.
