Chicago Cubs 2016 Season

#76
First lineup of 2016!

1. Fowler, CF
2. Heyward, RF
3. Zobrist, 2B
4. Rizzo, 1B
5. Bryant, 3B
6. Schwarber, LF
7. Soler, DH
8. Montero, C
9. Russell, SS

Here's to it looking as good on the field as it does on paper!

Russell has discovered the pop in his bat that he had in the Minors, too. There really isn't a place a pitcher can rest.

Couple of thoughts midway through the 7th.

1. Cubs hitting the ball hard and getting on base in multiple ways.
2. Great welcome back Dexter Fowler. 3 hits as of now.
3. Arrieta looks sharp. 2014 and 2015 were no fluke.
4. Ben Zobrist with a Cubs debut he'd like to forget. (I miss you, Starlin).

I'm probably forgetting some, but it's getting late on the east coast.

Zobrist did have that nice and timely double play early on

What happened to Zobrist? Looking at his line, nothing wrong there. Defensive lapse?

Definitely not a bad overall line, and his second hit was after the 7th when I posted. From what I saw, his 2 strikeouts were poorly timed, displayed some unsound footwork on a double play, and was caught napping on the bases as he was picked off at first by the catcher.

But it's only 1 game.;-)

He struck out on two nasty pitches. Richards is considered by many to be an up and coming elite pitcher and has filthy stuff. as far as timing goes, it's his first game of the year. He's probably playing with some nerves wanting to impress his new team and fans. Getting picked off is inexcusable, but come on.

I did say it was only one game. I'm sure he'd probably like to forget this one. He's going to be a valuable piece to this team.

I think it says a lot that we can strike out so much, leave guys on base and still put up 9 runs on an opening day starter/bullpen.

Last night's game was like a perfect model of how the Cubs want to win games. Grind out tough at bats against the starter. Get him out of there in the fifth. And then spend the next four innings feasting on the middle relief.

There are going to be some wore-out bullpens facing the Cubs in the third games of series this year.

Throw in 34 starts of Arrieta being nearly unhittable, and that's a pretty good formula for success.

Non-Cub note. Dodgers destroyed the Pads and the Giants killed the Brew. Going to see a lot of that in the NL this year when the top 7 teams play the bottom 6.

Cubs station affiliate guide

Last year Cubs put out a station affiliate guide. Has anybody found one for this year? Not having cable I plan my week around which days Cubs games are on over the air channels. In Champaign they are on wcix, wand and wbui. Unfortunately I'm having beast of a time finding out which days/nights. Any help would be appreciated?

Yeah, I was looking for the affiliate guide yesterday but all I could find was the list from last year. Here's my best guess on some of these channels based on last year. FYI - I would be in mediacom territory just outside of Champaign.

If the game is listed as ABC7 (WLS) in Chicago, it is likely on WCIX. For me this is channel 3.2.
If the game is listed as WGN Chicago, it is likely on WBIU (CW). For me this is channel 23.1.
If the game is on Comcast Sports Net (CSN) Chicago, I believe that is your only option. In my area this is mediacom QAM channel 55.15. It looks like CSN+ is mediacom QAM channel 58.6. Since NBC Sports has the same ownership as Comcast Sport Net, I was hoping the NBC Sports streaming options would add CSN games (cable/satellite login required), but so far no luck.
If the game is on ESPN/ESPN2 you can stream the game on a variety of devices, provided you have a cable/satellite login. ESPN is QAM Channel 55-5 on mediacom around here, ESPN2 is 55-13.

Not sure if this was discussed here, but there was a class action lawsuit against MLB.TV that reached a settlement recently. It looked like there may eventually be hope for them offering a streaming option for in-market games (i.e. no blackouts) on MLB.TV. Unfortunately that day isn't here yet.

They claim you'll be able to add that at some point this season for 10 bucks, but it looks like you'll still have to authenticate with some kind of TV provider subscription. Living outside the Cubs market, MLB TV is great even with local games blacked out. With the student discount of like 35% it was <$75 for the whole season. You can also save 20% if you subscribe to just one team instead of everything.

Definitely couldn't get all that info from his line. :) Good thing he wasn't needed on Opening Day.

Love MLB.Tv. Allows me to watch the afternoon games from the UK.

I kinda love that the Cubs' team ERA is 0.50 after two games!

I think 16-8 is a reasonable expectation for the first month of the season. Other than the Cardinals, not too many games against teams expected to be good.

15 games against the really bad Braves, Reds, Brewers, and Rockies. 11 of those 15 are at home.

Extremely small sample size, but D Fowler's projected WAR is quite impressive also....

I am sure thats a reasonable expectation. I however do not expect reasonable this year. I expect unreal results. Id like to see 20 or more wins in that time frame. If it happens awesome! If not, whatever.
