Thanks for the replies! I'd have to agree about the pitching. Our offense has been awesome but when it comes to the playoffs I think are pitching would carry us. Winning 2-0 or 3-2 is the same as winning 7-2. We just have to keep winning and I think our pitching will keep the runs against us down.

While I'm excited to see Almora, I'm afraid this means we're looking at an extended DL stint for Soler. If it were only going to be a couple weeks, I think they would have just gone with Kalish.

3 for 3 from Baez so far today. Got his OPS back up to about .700.

With his solid or better defense at several positions, he does not have to be much better than average with the bat to be a really valuable player for the Cubs.

He's on pace for about a 1.5 WAR season off the bench.

The Cubs are a much better team in the field with Almora & probably just as good with the bat , now.

I think Soler is trade bait .
Is there really any long term chance Schwarber is a starting catcher ? If not , he's trade bait too next year .

Soler very well could be traded, but is still a valuable talent at only 24 years of age. I'm a fan of the potential. That said, if there is an offer which could help the team, I could see Theo & Jed striking a deal.

As far as Schwarber goes, I doubt he sticks at catcher full-time. I don't think the Cubs deal him. He'll be giving Contreras a day's rest here and there in the next few years.

I'm with you on Soler. Schwarber is a left handed power hitter. Teams tend to keep those hitters. But with his knee injury and if he can only be a DH, that's another story.

I'm still convinced that Schwarber is left-handed Manny Ramirez and that you'd be crazy to give up Schwarber for anything less than a left-handed-Manny-Ramirez-type return. Stick him in left and just let him rake for the next 8 to 10 years.

Maybe he doesn't pan out. Maybe this knee injury keeps him from ever reaching his potential. All the same, I think you have to give him all of next year and all of the next year after that to judge.

If Almora shows he has enough of a bat (his glove is a given) and Schwarber is on target to come back healthy, then Soler is likely the odd man out. Especially if Contreras continues to show that he's on target for the Majors later this year and Baez continues to show he's an above average major league player at multiple positions.

I think Soler and Vogelbach to an American league team is the beginning of a package that could net a major, major return.

whats this Bautista talk re the Cubs all about ?

I think it's just speculation that if the Blue Jays were to fall out of the race and become sellers, Jose Bautista would be a guy they'd look to sell (free agent at the end of the season), and the Cubs would be a team interested in getting him.

As much as I am in hetero-sexual baseball LURVE with Joey Bats (leading the AL in walks, plays left, would fit this Cubs team perfectly in almost every way), it's WAY premature to talk about the Blue Jays being out of the playoffs. After a slow start, they're only 2 games out of the WC and have gone 13-6 over the last three weeks. At this point they're probably more likely to be buyers than sellers at the deadline.

He's 35, plays terrible defense, isn't even batting .230 and is on track to have his lowest WAR in more than 5 years. No thanks...

He's a free agent at the end of the year. His age doesn't really matter as to how he's likely to perform the rest of this year, and he wouldn't be back next year to worry about. His .827 OPS is better than the .788 they're getting out of LF this year. He's been a low BABip guy his entire career (.265), but the .228 he's posting this year is especially low and likely to rise.

It's all pretty irrelevant anyway since A. The Jays are probably going to be in the race and not selling at the deadline, and B. Bautista is a "5 and 10" guy and can veto any trade.

Cubs today acquired OF Chris Coghlan from the #Athletics for INF Arismendy Alcantara.

Coghlan's average was terrible when I saw the A's earlier this year. Not sure if it's come back up since then.

Dismal for the A's, Maddon will get the most out of him. He always seems better in the second half plus I believe next year he's a free agent. I think this was Alcantara's last option year.

Haven't paid attention to how Coghlan was doing this year... YEEGH! That's an ugly line! Part of that can be explained by BABip'ing .170, but still... 3.62 K/BB rate... Not good.

I was assuming he'd be going to AAA to work things out, but with LaStella headed to the DL, he's probably coming directly to the MLB team.

Alcantara was simply a former prospect who'd been passed by pretty much every other prospect. Not a surprise that he was traded.

I have no idea who this person is, but Ken Rosenthal follows him. He brings an interesting rumor to the table.

Great arm, plenty of baggage.

Edit: Apparently this is the random guy who broke the record Giancarlo Stanton contract.

Seems like an all in move for this year if they get Chapman. It would turn left handed relief from a weakness to a strength. Trading Chapman instead of Miller makes sense if your the Yankees. Even though it's just a rental, I hope this trade happens. I trust Theo not to overpay.

Cubs draft plan appears to be college RHP's rounds 3-5.

Chapman is on a very short list of relievers I'd give away an actual asset to acquire. Chapman, Kimbrel and Wade Davis and... that might be the whole list.

I'm trying to remember a deadline deal for an elite reliever headed to free agency to see what kind of assets would be involved.

I wouldn't expect the Yankees to ask too much back for Chapan since they only gave up a bad middle reliever, and three AA players, only one of whom can remotely be considered a real prospect. Since the Cubs are only getting him for 2 months, maybe something like Spencer Patton and Jeimer Candelario. I'd jump on that.

Sahadev Sharma squashing the Chapman rumors.

@SadahevSharma
Chapman rumors out there are completely false. Cubs are busy scouting arms, particularly relief, but haven't engaged in talks for Chapman

There are 4 pitchers currently sporting ERAs under 2 in the NL (2 of them Cubbies) 1/3rd of the way through the season. Of course, this won't hold up the rest of the season, but it is pretty phenomenal. Would guess a combination a bunch of NL season punting their season, and just some very good pitchers in the league.
