Maybe the guy's having legitimate doubts about whether he wants to be a baseball player any more. It makes you wonder. If he's not having a good time with this organization now, in what scenario would he enjoy baseball? Everyone knows the demotion was temporary, that he'd be back up in September at the latest, and that he was a virtual lock for the playoff roster with Maddon likely to only carry 11 pitchers.

Meanwhile on the field, Bryant absolutely annihilated a hanging slider from Weaver.

Man, Trout has to be wondering who he pissed off to get stuck on that sorry excuse for a team.

with the money they pay you, I would play that game until they took away my keys to the clubhouse.

what's he going to do, get a job at the local car dealer making 60,000 a year ? He's 27. He needs to understand how the game is set up and accept it. the vast majority of those guys don't have many great job options outside of baseball. if he is willing to walk away and get a normal job, then wow.

You and I both say we would play until they took the keys away, but how do we know that for for sure? We could get burnt out, and try something new. That could be TLS case right now. He also could have saved/invested his money wisely where he can take risks on doing something else.

9 straight wins, but it comes at a cost. Strop went down with a knee injury in the 8th. MRI scheduled for tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Strop out 4-6 weeks with a torn meniscus. Apparently the ligaments are intact. I think this can be spun as a positive.

And like you said, Carl Edward's table is ready. Mike Montgomery will need to step up, too.

yea, but a torn meniscus , for an athlete and pitcher no less, is still a big deal.

I tore mine about 4 years ago in a silly little incident . It bothered me a lot, but I lived with it for a few weeks. then it started getting worse and my knee swelled up like a cantelope. I then had arthroscopic on it , and it was quite a while, like 3-4 months, before it was all better.

this is not a one year rehab like a torn ACL would be , but I would not expect him back this year.

Pretty much impossible to argue any other team has been the best team in baseball this year. The Cubs have it all. Only concern left, it isn't the best team in baseball that wins the World Series... it is the hottest team. Here is hoping that come October, we get the post-all star break Cubs, not the team that we were entering the break.

By the by, Chapman is great. I think someone mentioned on here that it was a historically bad deal we made for him, but the bullpen looks outstanding with him at the back end and everyone else pushed to a slightly easier spot. Losing Strop was tough, but I am not nearly as worried about it given the flurry of arms we have picked up in the last couple weeks.

Holliday diagnosed with a fractured thumb after being hit by a pitch tonight. Hate to see that. Really hope there won't be any retaliation later in the series, as that was completely unintentional.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals are known for retaliating regardless of intention. Rizzo & Bryant should be prepared to be targets.

Oh come on, like your cubs are any different. When there's a hbp near the head - regardless of intent (I know the hbp was unintentional) - teams are going to retaliate especially when it's your 3 hole hitter.

Do I think it's dumb to retaliate? Hell yes. Throwing at players is so !!!!ing stupid.

Oh come on, like you Cubs are any different. Teams are going to retaliate - regardless of intent (I know the hbp was unintentional) - when a fastball hits someone near the head. Especially, when it's your three hole hitter.

I think it's !!!!ing stupid to retaliate. Why put players health in risk? Baseball needs to take this part out of the game.

The value of the trade is all in how Chapman performs in the playoffs and if having him wins a game/series/world series for you guys. If he helps win a single game in a world series run, it's probably a good trade.

Not a Cubs fan either but I liked the move for you guys. Even with all the young talent, you never know how long that Championship window is going to be open with injuries/regressions/bad contracts. The opportunity you guys have this year as likely the best team in the game and not having to play in the wild card 1 game playoff is well worth the risk IMO.

I think Cub fans might be leery given Garcia's retaliation near the head of Bryant earlier this season.

Alas, I do agree that retaliation is pointless. The best retaliation is beating your opponent, not throwing a 95mph fastball at them.

If the Cardinals retaliate, I'll be rooting for Javy (because he'd be the most likely to actually do this) to hit a 500-foot home run, flip the bat over his head and into the visitor's dugout, go on the slowest, douchiest trot around the bases ever, pointing at the pitcher the entire time, until moonwalking the last twenty feet to home plate.

Actually, if I'm being honest with myself, I'm kind of rooting for that to happen whether the Cardinals retaliate or not.
