Chicago Cubs 2017 Season

Sonny Gray has two more years of team control ('18 and '19) and isn't even on his first free agent contract yet. So I'd guess he'd be making less than $10 per season for those two years.

He's probably having a better year than Quintana this year, but has been nowhere near as consistent as Quintana over the course of his career in either health or performance.

So, all told, I think the Cubs would have to give up less than they did to get Quintana. Still, there's not much left in that farm system. Candeleirio is quite clearly blocked. So he'd be one piece. Can't see the Cubs trading Caratini unless they had another #2 catcher lined up.

I could see Almora being a piece in this trade puzzle.

He definitely seems like a Billy Beane type player.

...and tonight, do you realize how hard it is to score 10 runs when your lead off man goes 0-5?

On a scale of 1-10, I can imagine it being quite difficult.

Pass. Plus defense and I think he'll hit a bit more once he gets more ABs. Not for Gray.

Candelerio + for Gray? Sure, I would do that.

It's not just the 3 hits in seven innings , but he owned the Os. 12 SOs? Always ahead in the count...dominant!

Arrieta gave up 1 hit over 7 innings just 14 days ago.

And Lester threw a 4 hit complete game back in May.

But the fact that those two starts stand out so much is pretty telling.

Lackey had a darn good outing in Colorado. Last month? Or May?

But your point still stands. Not many memorable outings by a staff that was outstanding last year.

I don't think this amounts to anything, but alas, the stove is hot.

From MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand:

@feinsand
Industry source thinks Cubs will trade for Britton. “If you have a chance to add Britton to your club, you do it. Theo has the minor-lgrs."

He's got another year of control after this, immediately answering the "who closes next year" question, and would give the Cubs the best two relievers by WAR over the last 3 1/2 years (Wade Davis) for the stretch run.

But, man! I don't see the Cubs having the resources left to pull that one off. Figure, with an added year of control left, he'll cost at least as much as Chapman did last year, probably more.

I haven't heard much regarding Davis and a desire to re-sign with the Cubs next season, but given the Royals recent demotion of Soler to AAA, this trade has proven to be a win.

That said, I agree with your points on the cost of Britton. Even with the forearm injuries he's had this season, it would cost off more than just Candelario et al., with the strong likelihood of the inclusion of a player on the active roster. If they do intend on breaking the prospects bank, I'd rather see a move for Gray.

Maybe better than the win is that Kyle Hendricks pitched 5 perfect innings in his second rehab start and in undoubtedly on his way back to the rotation soon.

At the beginning of the season I predicted both Jason Heyward and Jon Jay would have higher WARs on the season than Dexter Fowler.

The update: Heyward, 1.8; Jay, .7; Fowler, .4.

Bref's defense numbers are a joke, total zone rating is outdated and approaching completely useless now that some stat-cast data is publicly available.

Fangraphs (better): Fowler 1.2, Heyward 1.3, Jay 0.7 (only 205 PA). But Heyward was a pretty safe bet to be better than Fowler moving forward. Jay will never be more valuable than Fowler, mostly due to lack of PA (but also due to not actually being better than Fowler).

Fowler was also injured for several weeks.

As a neutral observer, I felt the Cubs would miss Fowler the most. Iirc, when he was out last year, they hovered around .500.

Sometimes players are more than just what the stats indicate. I think Fowler was that intangible you can never quantify.

I fell asleep, but it's nice to wake up to a win.

Willson Contreras has been on fire after the break.

Back to back sweeps...on the road? Could they be back? Tune in tonight. Same Cub time, same Cub channel!

Actually, it's an early start today at 12:10 ET. Mongtomery vs. Dickey. Should be fun.

But your point stands, get the sweep!
