Chicago Cubs 2017 Season

Cubs have to take care of business at home this weekend against St. Louis. What follows after one day off is a 10-day road trip consisting of 2 games in Tampa Bay, 4 in Milwaukee, and 4 in St. Louis.

If they play .500 ball they should be able to hold off the division, but baseball is always unpredictable, so let's hope for more.

Contreras suspended 2 games for his actions against the umpire in yesterday's game. He is appealing the suspension.

I hope that the league also looked at that home plate umpire and took some sort of action. He was awful.

Step on their necks tomorrow.

Also, Cubs passed the Nats as the highest scoring team in the NL this season. Amazing considering the offensive doldrums all through the first half of the year.

Watching games at Tropicana Field reminds me of when Walter and Jesse had to cook inside fumigated homes in Breaking Bad. What an ugly stadium.

*Apologies for the large images.

What an electric game. Baez with a perfect 2-strike approach, Bryant with the bomb in extras, and Davis shuts the door.

Magic number down to 6!

Happ looked out at first in the 9th, What a break. Good hustle! Good to see Baez and Bryant come up with huge hits.

Wilson has been terrible since the Cubs acquired him. They will probably have to keep him on the playoff roster but you can't go into next year planning on him being your closer.

Agreed, to hair-pulling levels. Avila has been the unintended centerpiece of that deal.

While Wilson is definitely in the mix assuming Davis isn't resigned, I think the hope is for Edwards to get a shot at the closer spot, with Strop and Rondon having opportunities, too. It'll be interesting to see what Theo & Co. have up their sleeves.

I think some of what we’re seeing with Wilson is some statistical “snap back” after posting a career first half of the season with Detroit. His aggregate for the year isn’t too far off his typical career numbers and still pretty darn good. He’s had some bad luck in a small amount of innings. Last night was a good example. He got BABiP’ed to death.

He mainly needs to go up there, have some confidence in his stuff and throw some GD strikes.

That said, I think you’re right in that you can’t rely on him as your closer next year. But I strongly suspect the Cubs are going to spend big on their bullpen next year. They have something like $40 million coming off the books, no place to put a big time position player FA, and very few big time starting pitcher candidates worth the money. So I could see them getting bit a righty like Wade Davis or Addison Reed AND a lefty like Fernando Abad or Jake McGee to go along with a mid-priced starter like Alex Cobb or Tyler Chatwood.

For whatever reason, I want Chatwood on the 2018 Cubs so badly.
