Chicago Cubs 2017 Season

Mike Montgomery has been such an underrated pick up for the Cubs. He's done everything they've asked of him in the season plus he's been with them. He's a complete bargain and under team control for 4 more seasons. And the Cubs gave up nothing much to get him.

I also like Montgomery but Paul Blackburn's not too bad.

Montgomery is quickly becoming one of my favorite current Cubs. He's a lunch pail kind of guy, and I'm a sucker for a good lefty. And not to mention he ended the World Series last year.

Also, [ W ] #68. Gotta love the Reds. Five straight wins and the largest division lead of the season!

Cubs have passed the Rockies and are percentage points ahead of the DBacks now.

It shouldn't matter, but it's nice to know if the Cubs play well but the Cards or Brewers go on some sort of epic win streak, the Cubs will still largely be in control of their playoff fate.

A small part of me is hoping both the Cardinals and Brewers pass the D-Backs and Rockies and the Central ends up with 3 teams in the playoffs. The Wild Card was supposedly done and decided a month ago, after all.

A larger part of me hopes the Cardinals lose every game from now until eternity. :D

I'm rooting for the DBacks, mainly because purely as a baseball fan, I want to see Paul Goldschmidt in the playoffs. Dude's a monster who doesn't get enough credit.

They lost yesterday, but [ W ] #69 for my post continuity...

2 game lead on the Brewers, 4.5 on the Cardinals.

It's frustrating. They play well for a decent stretch and then just give games away. Like yesterday. That game should have been over after the first inning.

Very much so.

On the bright side, this weekend's series introduced one of my favorite Cubs-related video clips ever.

Cubs the first team in MLB history with 5 players 25 or younger (Contreras, Schwarber, Happ, Baez, Bryant) to hit 20 home runs in the same season. Russell had 21 last year but has only been able to play 97 games this year.

Old man Rizzo (28) is a sixth, giving the Cubs 6 players with 20 HRs in the same season for the first time in team history.

Bears dominating the Steelers. Up 17-3 late in the 4th quarter.

Hey, wrong thread. ;)

Last night was a fun one. Jay's catch, Javy's steal of home, Happ's HR & 4 RBI.

Only 19 games behind the Dodgers for the best record in baseball!

Javy had an inside the park HR earlier in the month. I wonder if any other player have ever done that and stolen home in the same season (let alone the same month).

If their recent play is any indication, the Cubs will get shut out or score one or two runs tonight......

Yeah. The Cubs batters don't seem to handle success well. Probably a sign of their youth. Per BR, the Cubs have the third youngest collection of position players in the Majors behind only the Padres and Phillies. I believe that's weighted by playing time.

That said, they're now up to 6th in the Majors and 3rd in the League in runs per game. The offense is finally doing what we all thought it would at the beginning of the season.

They've outscored the opposition by something like 90 runs since the All-Star break which is pretty amazing although that number is bolstered by a few massive blowouts.

I was looking back in this thread and saw that on June 16, the Cubs had an MLB worst .273 BABiP, clearly unsustainable. That's almost completely normalized now and they're at .298, which is good for 19th in the Majors, and only slightly below average.

How's that 5 year, $86 million deal the Yankees gave Aroldis Chapman working out for them in year 1?

In his last 29 appearances (warning: arbitrary end points!) Chapman is 3-3, 9 saves, 4 blown saves, and a 5.67 ERA in 27 innings. Over his last 7 appearances, his ERA is over 10.

In contrast, the Dodgers are getting their money's worth from their 5 year, $80 million deal with Kenley Jansen (2.6 WAR , 58.1 IP, 35 SV, 1.23 ERA, 1.24 FIP 0.686 WHIP).

Makes me wonder what kind of contract Wade Davis will bring next season. He's two years older, but has been as reliable as closers come in 2017.
