I too am not a fan of Rogers. But that article, plus the Chavez acquisition, plus the rumors of the Cubs kicking the tires on some veteran outfielders like Adam Jones and Curtis Granderson (Almora or Happ replacements?) makes for a bit of smoke.

Who was reporting that about those OFs? Rogers and someone else had some stuff on DeGrom but didn't see anything on the OFs. Not sure I like either of those guys to be honest.

Rosenthal and Stark both reported it about a week and a half ago. Didn't make much sense then. But if Happ were part of a blockbuster deal, picking up one of those - or someone like them - guys for a D-level prospect to plug the hole in the roster for the rest of the year might make sense.

Sometimes you just gotta tip your hat and get ready for the next game.

Also Tommy La Stella and Ian Happ are better than some of our relievers??

Cubs' starting pitching is trending in a bad direction. With injuries and poor performance by some in the pen, they are going to have to go deeper into games.

Agreed. Hope they can turn the corner or it will be a short run in the playoffs.

With the Red Sox, Yankees, and Astros alongside the Cubs in the bidding war for Orioles RP Zach Britton, I don't foresee the Cubs landing him. It'll be interesting to see what type(s) of arms the Cubs work to acquire at the deadline.

Looks like the Yankees got him.

Sounds like a couple non-prospects and a pile of cash to the Rangers for Cole Hamels could be happening really soon.

Loved Hamels in his prime. He's a ways away from that pitcher he was at this point. Still, I bet he doesn't walk 6 guys a start.

Not trying to spin this positively or negatively, but Hamels ERA at home is above 6 while on the road it's below 3. Chatwood had a similar story last year.

At any rate, getting someone like Hamels for peanuts is a good trade, perfect for a team like the Cubs. Even more so when you take into account the Yankee's had to give up at least decent prospects to get Happ--who's ERA isn't crazily different than Hamels.

That and even if Hamels pitches just the way he did in Texas, I'd prefer to see Hamels give up HRs than Chatwood giving up walk after walk (and run after run).

Eddie Butler and an A-ball pitcher i’ve Never heard of go back to Texas for Hamels.

Neither of the two minor league pitchers traded so far this year were in the Cubs top 30 of prospects.

Low risk move. I don't expect much from Hamels but he was traded for nothing so they could catch lightning in a bottle...

The A ball guy looks to have some upside. Strikeout an inning. Was recently demoted from high A to A ball. Not sure why since he didn't have many appearances at high A. Probably four years away so someone in the org probably would have passed him up in the pecking order.

So I'm assuming the move will be Chatwood to the pen. However does that really help things? At least when Chatwood started he had an opportunity to get out of his own jams. The last thing you need in a ballgame is someone pitching in relief who is going to walk a bunch of guys.

What else is there to do? I don't mind DFA'ing him, but I highly doubt they do that. TBH, I would've liked to have seen Chatwood leave instead of Butler. Butler showed he could pinch start and throw from the pen, albeit not fantastically.

They're not going to DFA Chatwood. His BB/9 is twice what it's been his entire career. That's not someone who's lost his stuff. It's someone that has something wrong with his mechanics that can be fixed. It might take the winter for it to happen though.

The Cubs are in the midst of a 21 games in 21 days stretch. And then from Aug 14 to September 12, they have 1 day off. It would not be inconceivable for them to go to a six man rotation with Chatwood starting about once every 10 days with a spot relief appearance in between starts. They've done something similar with Montgomery and Cahill in previous years. Or maybe they put him in the back end of the pen and see if he can't pitch his way back into the rotation by taking some low leverage stints.

Regardless, Chatwood is going to be seeing fewer innings for a while.

As of right now, no 6 man rotation. But Maddon could change his mind.
