There’s only 12 games left in the season right? What’s our magic number at now @champaignchris ?
13 for the Division and 9 for a playoff spot* (second place in division)There’s only 12 games left in the season right? What’s our magic number at now @champaignchris ?
So did Jeffress blow the save AND get the win?
That’s gotta be rare right?
Based on my experience with waiver wire closers in fantasy baseball in recent years, it happens a fair amount.
Reds might sneak into 2nd place because of the games the Brewers and Cards play against each other. The Cubs are virtually assured at least the 2nd place slot. It will be very hard for both the Brewers and Cardinals to pass the Cubs because those teams have 10 games left to play against each other.
If one of those teams gets on a hot enough roll to pass the Cubs, it will almost certainly come at the expense of the other team.

I hope he's not done, because I think he can still contribute. I've never once cringed, even this year, when I see that's he's the starter. But I can't blame him if he wants to give it up and go home and spend time with his wife and kids. He's earned it.
17-17 over their last 34 games and they haven’t moved an inch in the standings. Still 5.5 games up.
It helps when the rest of the division is so mediocre.
I think the magic number is now 7 for the playoffs and 8 for the division.
I’ve been looking at teams that I thought would be bad matchups for the Cubs in a short series. Like the Phillies with Nola and Wheeler. But, as of right now, is there a worse nightmare than facing Darvish and Hendricks in a short series?
Also, whisper it quietly. Barely say it out loud for fear of the jinx... Kimbrel has been ferocious over his last 12 appearances. 24 Ks in 11.1 IP. Opponents are slugging .108 against him. Carry that over to the post-season, and... I’m not even going to finish that sentence.
On the opposite side of things, where has Kris Bryant been this year?

What about having to face some combination of Gray/Bauer/Castillo?
They need to get rid of multiple of Baez, Bryant, Contreras, Rizzo and Schwarber. You can only hold onto 2016 for so longThe announcers last night said the Cubs’ offense is broken and they were exactly right. Through the first 36 games of the season, the Cubs averaged 4.92 runs a game. Over the last 17 (which includes a 12 run outburst), they’ve averaged 3.24, and the approaches of several of their should-be stars has been horrible.
On the flip side, the Cubs bullpen, which started the year miserably has dropped its ERA to 4.26, good for a respectable 5th in the NL.
The Cubs pitching is good enough to do some damage in the playoffs, but the offense reeks right now, with Happ, Schwarber, Bryant, Rizzo and Baez all looking lost up there. I’m sure they’ll fire the hitting coach again, but this is the third or fourth year in a row the offense has gone on a tailspin right at the end of the season.
