These last few weeks I've been a bit distracted with a puppy taking over my home, but it looks like the Cubs drafted LHP Jordan Wicks out of Kansas State last night. Reported to be the best LHP and has an "elite"' changeup (https://www.mlb.com/news/jordan-wicks-is-cubs-first-round-pick-in-2021-mlb-draft).
The question on him is upside. He’s supposed to be be pretty close to MLB ready. Maybe end of 22, start of 23.
But like a lot of polished collegiate players, he seems to be what he’s going to be. Maybe the Cubs can eke out a couple extra mph from his fast ball, or improve his curve a bit, but he’s largely the player now that he’s got to be in the pros.
A Michael Wacha kind of career is basically what I think the Cubs are hoping for here. Help the the Big League team almost immediately, but never turn into a star.

Not much salary to dump or eat in Joc’s case. The whole point of releasing Schwarber and replacing him with Joc was that they were statistical clones and Joc was a couple million cheaper.
Hopefully the Cubs are doing some internal reflection on why Joc continued to underperform while Schwarber busted out with the Nats.
But this trade was just getting something/anything from a player that was going to walk in free agency in a couple months, and hopefully the Cubs will be able to pull off several more trades just like this in the next couple weeks. Fangraphs now rates the new kid the 17th best prospect in the Cubs system. Which isn’t great, but it’s not nothing.

Kyle Hendricks is tied for 2nd in the MLB with 14 Quality Starts in his 19 starts.
The rest of the Cubs have a total of 14 Quality Starts in their 72 starts.
For what it’s worth, Yu Darvish has 10 QSs in his 18 starts.

yea, we knew what direction Ricketts/Hoyer wanted to go starting this season when that Darvish trade was made.

This is why I think it needs to blown up completely. I can see signing a couple free agents and making a few changes to the offense and feeling good about it. The starting pitching is nowhere near what you need to win in the playoffs. If I’m Hoyer I’m listening to offers for Hendricks. Cubs need a bunch of live young arms.
God, what a terrible trade that was. I know it's easy to critique it now but I truly never liked the trade.
Hendricks is signed to a very reasonable contract for another 2 1/2 years with a very reasonable club option for an additional year after that.
3 1/2 years of one of the most reliable starting pitchers in baseball, with an established big game playoff pedigree, no injury history, the type of arm/stuff that doesn’t deteriorate with age…
Yeah Hoyer can listen, but unless the other team is offering 2 MLB ready starters minimum, I don’t see Hoyer taking a trade. There’s no reason why Hendricks can’t be a big piece of the next Cubs playoff team.

We can blame Theo. He allowed this train wreck to happen with Q trade, signing Darvish for way too much money. Theo did not care since he was not here for the long run and let this mess grow.

I don't think it can be understated how much responsibility Kris Bryant has for the Cubs falling out of contention this year. He's been flat out awful for the last 5 weeks.
In his last 30 games, Bryant is .167/.248/.265 with 32 Ks to only 9 walks and 4 extra base hits.

You probably wouldn't. I assumed that since one of the big reasons Quintana was traded for was his affordable contract, same as was described above for Hendricks, that some might find it funny that I suggested that trade. Obviously didn't work. I apologize.
Been a little behind this weekend, though tonight they look to be dropping the series finale.
