Remind me how many playoff games the Cubs have won under Hoyer's leadership? Oh yeah, it's zero because they haven't made the playoffs since Jed took over from Theo. Take a look at the overall standings right now. Cubs are 11th in MLB. If the season ended today, he wouldn't even be considered for Executive of the Year. I won't rehash the issues with the bullpen because we know it's bad. What I don't understand is why he can't build a decent bullpen. It's great that he has rebuilt the farm system but ultimately, his goal is to win the World Series. Can't do that when you don't make the playoffs.

They are on pace for 92 wins. So far, they played a killer schedule but haven't played anyone in their division. We'll see how they fare against the so-called weaker teams in the NL Central. I'm cautiously optimistic but if they don't get the bullpen figured out, they are toast.
Blah, blah, blah.... Lighten up- they are in 1st place!

Go Cubs Go!!!!!

1st and 2nd nobody out, huge inning on the horizon

Seiya GIDP

I mean he's been doing this for 4 years. Expecting it to ever change is insanity. I'm not sure I've ever seen a player with so much good will and hasn't earned any of it. The narratives are always changing. He was adjusting to the league... he was hurt... right field is tough at Wrigley. The umpires are mean to him. Bad BABIP luck. It goes on and on and on. Can't wait for the end of the Seiya tenure.

Do you not realize how destroyed the organization was when Theo left? The farm system was in the bottom, the team was old with nothing coming up to help. It has taken 5 years to right the ship. Now the farm is developing talent and brining that talent to the highest club. I predicted we will have anywhere between 92-95 wins. Jed has built this team well.

Jed went like $300,000 over the luxury tax last year. He wastes money on a regular basis and it all adds up to the point that we are not players for legitimate upgrades. How would this team look right now with Bregman at 3rd base instead of this Brujan clown since Shaw was so overwhelmed by big league pitching he's already been demoted? The money he spent on turds like Justin Turner and Hector Neris and a bunch of other trash that cost a lot and never produced would have made up the difference from what we offered Bregman and what Boston ultimately landed him for.

I believe that to be true.

The bull pen is light years ahead of where we were this time last year. We have had a few bumps but it will be better as we have played a very tough schedule top this point and came away with a 12-9 record. We will be fine in the BP.
I must be taking crazy pills then. The Cubs were up 7-1 at home and now it's 7-5 with 2 runners in scoring position. That's not normal for an MLB team, and certainly not one that has the resources the Cubs have.

Edit: 7-6.

When it's a 50/50 proposition that you're going to hold a 7-1 lead at home with your best reliever on the mound, you're certainly not light years ahead of anything.

30th ranked bullpen and little league caliber players at 3rd base because you wasted half your payroll on trash.

Yeah, no one should be defending Jed Hoyer. He is the worst GM in baseball by a wide margin.

Exactly. It's mid April and this team has more 10 run innings by the bullpen to turn wins into losses than the average team accumulates in several seasons. Good point.

Bad bullpen day for Cubbies, though the pitcher that few wanted had a nice start. Thankfully, no AZ reliever could get 3 outs.

Never a doubt. Baseball is too fun to ruin it with negativity.
IDK, it's kind of the definition of insanity. Team has some talent but when they're hot late in the year, choking these early games has cost them the playoffs 2 straight years. I haven't seen much evidence this year will be different except that Tucker is clearly better than any hitter we've had since prime Kris Bryant

Jed’s only been in charge since November 2020. However, he was part of the group that ran it into the ground after 2016. He also couldn’t do anything with SD when he was there, other than trade Rizzo to the Cubs. Not sure why you think he’s a great GM but I respect your opinion.

I'm going to mediate because you're both right.

1)Hoyer turned a complete dumpster fire around

Yet

2)You can't go into this season with this bullpen and a highly questionable starting rotation.

YET

3) Rickett's won't cough up the money to put a full staff together.

In retrospect there's some truth to that.

But at the moment Theo left, no one could have imagined how little good baseball Rizzo (30), Bryant (28), and Baez (27) had left in them.

Just like everything else in life, nuance is a factor larger than anyone will ever admit.

Hard to blame Ricketts FULLY when Justin Turner is making $6,000,000 and Ryan Pressly is making $8.5 million from the Cubs. Don't get Pressly and don't sign a 41 year old who hits like a beer league 8 hole hitter and then you probably have close to enough to get Bregman. The way he allocates funds is maddening, goes back to moves like Hosmer and all the other empty money dumps. If Pressly ends up having a nice season, I'll eat my crow but he doesn't have closer stuff anymore. That's obvious to all.

That gets you less than half of Bregmans salary, but I do get your point. There is some wasted dollars at this point. I am hopeful Pressly will turn it around and get some value out of that money.

They are far enough under tax threshold that they should have added Bregman and another more expensive reliever (and not signed Turner and Pressly). I don't think this is a Jed issue as much as a Ricketts issue.

Edit: More damning on Jed is imagine the payroll flexibility without Taillon and Swanson contracts.
