I’d say Ohtani would be the MVP but PCA is in the top 3.
There have been better running teams...notably the Cardinals with Brock, Ozzie and the rest, but not with the number of power hitters as well. They are the best CUBS running team of my lifetime (78 years...)

Matthews was situational , but the daily double just knew how to be really good at it
I wouldn’t count on him be discounted. More likely they just wait and hope he starts showing better at end of year to trade him during off season. He’s under team control through 2027 season. No reason not to wait and try to maximize the value of their best trade asset unless ownership absolutely tells GM to cut salary now.

Letting your starter scuffle endlessly in the 8th when you have the lowest bullpen ERA in baseball over the last month + is truly something special. Guy isn't worth $5, much less $5 million per year.

That game was decided in the 1st inning. 3 singles, bases loaded, nobody out. K....K....Pop Out.
I think Counsel made the right move. The Cubs are in the beginning of 26 games in 27 days. He kept the bullpen rested for what is going to be a tough stretch.
The baseball season is a long one, keeping your bullpen rested separates champions from mediocrity.
I don’t think this was the game to keep the bullpen rested though. Tie game and it was very likely Boyd wasn’t going to throw a CG, so you were going to have to go to pen anyway. Only two guys had pitched in each of last two games, so availability of arms shouldn’t have been an issue. Save the bullpen in a game(s) when down big early by keeping SP longer or have middle reliever go 2-3 innings. You know over the course of that stretch you’re going to have games like that. Try and win the game in front of you when it is very winnable.
It was disappointing especially when we had them on the ropes but that’s baseball. Gore is a tough lefty. The issue and it happens with young guys is they get to swing happy and PCA was up there with big eyes looking to go deep. It’s still a learning g process to where take what they give you instead of trying to hit a grand slam. Swanson was just over matched on his AB. Gore just buckled down and made the pitches needed to survive. Let’s get the series win today and move on to the next.
Boyd was throwing a great game. We have a tough 6 game road trip aftert leaving DC and the way the offense was not hitting g last night, it was just one of those games. CC made the right call. We just did not have the bats going last night against a tough lefty.
It's a moot point. Boyd being left in didn't lose the game--it really had zero bearing on the outcome.

How do you arrive at this conclusion? He gave up an insurance run in the 8th. If they were playing for one run in the 9th instead of two, that would have changed things immensely. I agree that he never should have been out there for the 8th.
Do you think Theo would still do that for us?
I'm starting a campaign to go with 6 starters when Shota comes back. Consider the history of the present starters innings pitched and I think it's a no brainer.

Pretty simple. The Cubs scored zero runs. Whether you lose 1-0 or 2-0, it counts the same in the standings. What would have changed in the 9th inning? You had a runner at 1st with 1 out. Are you going to bunt there with Hoerner? I don't think so. Then it's runners on the corners with 2 outs. You're hitting away whether it's 1-0 or 2-0 at that point.
Not to mention that whatever reliever you brought in could have given up the run just as easily.

Boyd hasn't pitched more than 78 innings since 2019. He also happens to currently be our best starting pitcher. We also happen to be incredibly thin at starting pitcher.
If you're going to rest anyone in a 1-0 game, it should be Boyd. Not a long list of bullpen arms that have been changing and still producing.
But this is besides the point. Boyd was missing his spots and lost a little velocity in the 7th and sending him back out there for the 8th resulted in a very predictable result. Almost anyone from the bullpen would have been better. It didn't have to be Keller or anything.
Here is the problem. Pitchers are used to pitching every 5th day. Starting pitchers are a creature of habit. I doubt they would want to pitch every 6th day. It will take away from their amount of starts and many have incentives built in on games pitched and wins. The players union would not allow it.
Circling back to Luzardo, we may have dodged a bullet on that one so props to whoever saw whatever it was in the physical. Giving up 20 runs in 2 starts, wouldn't be surprised if he hit the IL soon.
