I feel like the NIL landscape helped Illinois inch closer to being able to recruit like a UK. Illinois has historically been more risk averse in the "gray areas" and OA probably valued the unleashed aspects of UK recruiting when he left. I'm guessing our NIL would make recruiting here more attractive than last time.
I really hope people are starting to wake up to this.

The old world of seeming cool and providing rule-breaking under the table payment to high schoolers was porridge that was too hot, but people's dream of a "fair" hard salary cap in which Northwestern and Minnesota have the exact same resources as Illinois is porridge that's much too cold.

An open marketplace where resources are allocated by fanbase size and dedication to basketball is just right for us. Especially when we have a coach who is better than average with closing recruitments quickly and making the best of roster chaos.

The peeps here in Paducah that are UK fans that I talk to are ready for a change ..........too much recruiting success without cutting down the nets........

UK fans are so much more delusional than Illini fans in that they will support anything that brings another natty to Lexington , regardless of the ways being done to win that natty........cheat , steal and mislead their way to the trophy.....it doesn't matter what is done , just the final results.......

Cal has been on the hot seat with the peeps I talk to for a couple seasons now........some of the peeps I talk to are connected to the inner circles of UK BB........I don't ask them a lot of questions because I'm not a UK fan and they know that.........

The $$$$$ associated with UK BB is enormous.....absolutely gigantic , according to some alums I know and willing to share their knowledge............

JMHO...............

Probably a preference of more distance from an alleged Chicago sidechick
From what I have seen and heard, it wasn't a sidechick/guy for either him or his wife. But, they needed to get away. And I think this issue was in Chicago, not Champaign. Insiders have the story. There was a video at one point time time that I saw with he and his wife, combined with the info out there, that explained the awkward situation.

I don't think I ever saw any follow up after the video. Was there something else out there?

It wouldn't be an issue if he needed a job after just losing his at UK ...

Seems like OA would have a few options other than Champaign he did leave Lexington, no? Maybe not as high caliber/comfortable situation as UIUC (with a coach he's worked with before), but cities like Columbus and Ann Arbor (and that's just the start of this crazy carousel) probably more appealing for his wife than Champaign.

Obviously a ton of moving parts there, but seems like OA back to Champaign is not easy even if we do have a spot available (as long as his wife still feels the same way).

If he needs a job ... He will call Brad before he talks to anyone else ... Trust me ...

O did not really want to leave the first time ... Think part of him regrets that and he's said as much to me before ...

The first part is not true ... We actually offered him the same money ...
AFTER UK offered him bigger $$ ILL tried to match.

Too late at that point.

Wasn’t he only making somewhere around $350-400k at ILL before leaving.

Ohio State pulled Holtzman out of Butler when Illinois could not. They have the $$$, good b-ball history and a good recruiting base.

FAU coach - Dusty May fresh off Final Four (Indiana native, IU grad)
SDSU coach- Brian Dutcher fresh off NCAA Finals (B10 roots) I remember when he was grad assistant under Lou H
Arkansas coach - Musselman - NCAA success, former NBA head coach
Iowa State coach TJ Oltzberger - done well at SD State, UNLV
Dayton coach - Anthony Grant - failed at Alabama
Ole Miss - Chris Beard - great success at Texas Tech,
UCLA - Mick Cronin - sucessful at Cincinnati and UCLA but maybe tired of LA

JMO - I think they go after Dusty May, Musselman, Beard or Cronin. They will be competing with Michigan, UCLA, Louisville, Arizona State and Oklahoma State?,
It may be lip service, but Cronin said last week that he wants UCLA to be his last coaching destination.

I’m always for kicking the fox out of the hen house ASAP. Don’t understand the backlash for not letting Holtmann coach out the rest of the year. They’re in second to last place without any real inclinations of improving, better to start the search now. I love Holtmann but that’s a tough trajectory to say he deserved anymore runway than he did.

McDermott and Miller scare the heck out of me at OSU. Everyone else would be a B or less hire IMO.

We’re not far behind. Zing.
I don't think we are close. Yes, we all understand Tyler is an assistant coach under his dad here, but Tyler has been very good at his job and has a bright future in coaching. He could likely get hired somewhere else, easily, if he wanted to. We owe Tyler (and his analytics/statistics friend) a lot of thanks for our defensive success.

Cal can get almost any recruit. When you lose three home games is a shame According to UK fans.

As long as he leaves Chin at a bar in Lexington I'm all in favor of this.
I know its a cool kid move around here to snicker about Chin, and I'm not desperate for his return either, but I don't think it's right to forget that he was brought here to get us his former AAU player Ayo Dosunmu and in doing so he's among the most impactful assistants we've ever had here.

Saying he is a DUDE because he influenced 1 player's decision is...a choice. He also influenced THT not to come here.

He was fine. But most impactful, particularly when you look at the guys brought in after him, is a stretch.

Brian Dutcher (San Diego St HC) seems a strong fit for the Michigan job, supposing Howard is fired and Dutcher wants to leave San Diego. Dutcher is a Michigan native and was a Wolverine assistant for 10 years before spending the last 25 in San Diego, following Steve Fisher between those two. Dutcher's father coached at Eastern Michigan, down the road from Ann Arbor. Money would surely be better, but that San Diego lifestyle... San Diego State seems to me a rare mid-major job that you might consider staying with for life, over high major options.

Pondering Chester Frazier receiving coaching offers this offseason, I am looking at mid-majors where the coach might be on the hot seat and see a number that fit Chester's mid-Atlantic roots. (Not that a school anywhere else in the country won't consider him for a job.)
: UMBC, Maryland Eastern Shore, Loyola Maryland, Hampton, William and Mary, VMI, and LaSalle.
