Because he might not have a job at UK depending on how the rest of this season goes ...

His contract also only runs through the end of this season ...
Is Calipari really in trouble this year? Seems like it's a matter to time though...

Kentucky fans are crazy. I think Calipari is the single most overrated coach in history. He has always had a talent advantage, and cheated to get it. Now the playing field is level but he's still getting more talent than all but a few schools. He's lost 7 games this year, including a loss to UNC Wilmington, tied for 5th in conference.

I think Calipari is probably looking to leave before the pitchforks come out. I don't know how you can lose 7 games when you've got 3 guys on your team that combine to shoot 46.4% from 3 on 349 attempts. That's crazy good, and they're 5th in conference.

The fan base seems to have turned on him to some degree. I think they are delusional to think they will get a significant upgrade. He puts together an exceptionally talented roster every year. If his kids decide to try to play defense in March, they will be tough.
I think the days of any program having overwhelming talent year in and year out are over. Paying players doesn't make you special anymore. Kids still want to play for Cal.

So Kentucky fans are crazy but you agree with them that they can do better than Cal?

Yes ... I think they can ... If you give certain coaches that kind of talent and UK brand and resources... They will do more with it than Cal did ...

Cal has not been that good since 2018 ... He's also lost his edge recruiting-wise... Just look at the top 15 this year out of HS ... Cal got one guy ... When Cal had things rolling ... He was getting a handful ...

The thing about Kentucky is that it's the biggest basketball-first NIL army inside the Power Two by a country mile. Combined with all the traditional blue blood factors, I'd have a hard time calling anything else the #1 job in the country.

Who is the target though? Tommy Lloyd maybe? Within the conference Oats, Beard and Musselman all seem like the right profile. BU would crush it there, hopefully their eyes are elsewhere.

Think their target would be Scott Drew but I don't think he would take it ...

Which would lead them in the direction of ...

I feel like the NIL landscape helped Illinois inch closer to being able to recruit like a UK. Illinois has historically been more risk averse in the "gray areas" and OA probably valued the unleashed aspects of UK recruiting when he left. I'm guessing our NIL would make recruiting here more attractive than last time.

I don't see UK firing Cal this year unless he misses the playoff. (Truthfully I don't see that happens even if he misses it.) He has a large contract/buyout remaining. That makes it difficult for UK to fire him. He can leave by himself but will he do that when he is paid well with a large buyout? We shall see.
